Bonser ailing. Mauer working his way back

The Twins revealed after Monday’s workout that righthander Boof Bonser needed a cortisone shot last Thursday because of tendinitis in his shoulder. He threw on Sunday and said he felt better. But the Twins decided to hold off his next throwing session until Wednesday.
“ I had a MRI at the end of the year,” Bonser said. “It was bothering me. I started playing catch and throwing off the mound (after the New Year) and I really couldn’t do it. So we stretched it out and finally got the cortisone shot. Here I am right now.”
Bonser has had an MRI exam as well as an X-Ray. Both came back negative. “Just a heavy case of tendinitis,” Bonser said.
Bonser looms as a key bullpen figure if he can get used to coming in every other day or so.
As for Joe Mauer, he spent the day in the trainer’s room while the other catchers worked out. Off season surgery to remove a kidney obstruction ruined his offseason conditioning to the point where he doesn’t have his legs under him. He’s still working out some of the remaining soreness from the procedure while getting into playing condition.
No date has been set as to when he’ll be available to play in games. But he’s expected to be ready by the time camp breaks.
“I’m definitely getting that itch to get out there and run around with the guys,” Mauer said, “but I’ve gotta do some work before I get out there.
“I’m on schedule from where I should be. That’s the good thing. Gotta keep doing what they are telling me and I’ll be out there soon enough.”
