Mauer to have exam

Posted on March 9th, 2009 – 2:09 PM
By La Velle

Twins catcher Joe Mauer on Tuesday Wednesday will have a magnetic resonance arthrogram to try to get to the bottom of why he’s still having discomfort in his back nearly three months after surgery to remove a kidney obstruction.

Mauer will have dye injected into his back and stomach area to help doctors detect any problems.

The decision was made after Mauer met with the Twins medical staff, including head physician Dr. John Steubs. The Twins and Mauer believed the he would be close to getting back on the field by now but Mauer recently stopped doing on-field activities because of the discomfort.

When asked early Monday morning if he was getting antsy to get on the field, he said. “I have moved well past that.”

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the club needs answers.

“We have to figure out what’s going on so we can get him better and get him on the field.” Gardenhire said. “This is another effort to try to figure out where we are at and what we need to do. He’s not on the field yet. He’s not able to consistently go out and do anything.

“Concerned? Yeah.”

Hope the best for Mauer. He’s a great player, and an important part of this team. Redmond is a good backup, and Ramos has shown promise…but losing Mauer puts a hole in the lineup that will be tough for ANYBODY to fix.

At least they aren’t waiting until the last possible minute to investigate further. Whatever it takes, figure out what’s wrong and get working on plans… both to get him healthy asap and, if necessary, to make sure there’s another catcher ready to go north with the team in April.

AaronK says:

Ok, now this is not good news. I am not likely the direction this is starting to move.

Jason says:

March 9th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

For those who think this is the end of the world I refer you to what was supposed to be Mauer’s rookie year…2004. We went to the playoffs with Henry Blanco as our catcher.

I realize Mauer is slightly more counted on today than he was in 2004, but my point is the sky isn’t falling.

Ben W says:

March 9th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Ramos won’t start in the big leagues no matter what.

If (when) Mauer isn’t ready, Redmond will do most of the catching and Morales or Butera will be the backup.

Blake says:

March 9th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

Not good at all. If there’s still discomfort, I’d guess more surgery will be required. I doubt that surgery will be done on an outpatient basis.

Odds are, Mauer is out at least until the end of April.

Walter Johnson says:

Mike says:

If anything serious is revealed tomorrow, the Twins should seriously consider bringing in Pudge for the year. He could be a fantastic and cheap addition ($1.25 million for 1 year) that could start most games and spell Morneau @ first base as well. He’s reportedly in the best shape he’s been in for quite sometime and absolutely knocking the cover off the ball in the WBC.

I love Morales, but the Twins have what it takes to make a run for the ALCS this year, bringing in Pudge on the short term (much like Crede) would add another valuable veteren with World Series experience.

Tim, yeah, I do agree it’s odd that details of his surgery/recovery have been few, and vague.

Kind of surprising to see this guy is so brittle, considering before becoming a professional he was never hurt. Perhaps he needs to evaluate the supplements he takes? No I’m not saying steroids but we all know every single pro athlete gorges themselves on legal supplements. Just because they are legal doesn’t mean they are good for the body or do not produce unintended consequences. IE little injuries that never(or take an extended and not normal time) heal properly.

Mauer had non-baseball related surgery. The surgeon probably forgot a sponge in there or something (Jr. Mint?).

USAFChief says:

March 9th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Distressing news, to say the least, but it was becoming painfully obvious the Mauer thing wasn’t going as well as everyone hoped.

Will be interesting to see what the Twins do if the news after the MRI isn’t good.

Any extneded length of time without Mauer (or Morneau) is an issue the Twins lineup isn’t really equipped to handle well.

The good news is it’s still a month till opening day. Plenty of time for him to get ready if he can get on the field within a couple weeks.

SethSpeaks says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Morales and Redmond would be fine.

T says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

John: As catcher, Joe’s offense is above average. His only other option positionally (since Morneau’s kinda at 1st) is 3B…and Mauer would not be an above average offensive 3B.

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

Nora says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Fred, I recall people saying that about Crede and Twins got him. I’m not saying they will definately get him but I am more optimistic that they will if the need arises since they got Crede.

Chazz Michael Michaels says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Seth just because you have a hard on for prospects doesn’t mean Morales would be fine. If Mauer is out for an extended period, Pudge/Redmond would be a far better combo.

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Dave T says:

You guys, quit comparing Pudge to Crede. Crede doesn’t have a hit yet this spring.

Bob says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Ok, so what the heck. First Boof is misdiagnosed, and now it sounds like they’re clueless with Mauer. Can’t the Twins find a doc who knows what the hell he’s doing? Like the other guy said, “Send Dr. Rosen Rosen back to the records room!”

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Mauer would be an above average hitter whatever position he plays. He won the batting title two of the past three seasons!

You read the dumbest stuff here. Amazing.

Smallmarket says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

This is not a baseball related injury. A ‘kidney obstruction’ that shows discomfort 3 months after surgery. Maybe we should stop worrying about ‘getting him back on the field’, and pray for the young man’s health, period.

The Twins will be fine; Joe should do what’s necessary for himself….not Gardy, the front office, his teammates, and least of all, not us.

USAFChief says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Mauer would not be an above average offensive 3B.

Last year, the “average” production at third base in the AL was .267/.337/.431, for an OPS of .768.

Last year, Mauer hit .328/.413/.451, for an OPS of .864.

Mauer’s career line: .317/.399/.457, OPS .856.

Mauer would be an ‘above average’ hitter at any position on the field.

Anybody here who wouldn’t be THRILLED by the Twins getting an .864 OPS out of third base this year?

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Drew Butera is ready to catch in the major leagues. That was already the report on him last spring. Butera and Redmond can handle the duties until Joe is ready to return.

Terry Ryan’s clever trade (Castillo for Butera) may be about to pay off.

Just so you know the Twins doctors did not perform the surgery on Mauer anyway. He had the procedure done at the Mayo Clinic which is known to have some of the best Doctors in the world.

IowaTwin says:

Speaking of the Castillo trade, apparently Dustin Martin wasn’t the stiff some wanted to make him out to be.

Jeff in So Cal says:

Not to mention that the Twins also got Dustin Martin in that same deal. He is getting himself noticed big time with his showing in the AFL and here in spring training so far.

Dood says:

Tom says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

If he’s not up to full speed in two weeks I’ll be very concerned. I’m concerned now but any loss of Mauer’s services is huge.

USAFChief says:

March 9th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Oh no. Chief and I agreeing. This has to be a sign of end times or the apocalypse or something like that. I am gripped with fear.

I noticed that too, and it was almost enough to get me to reconsider my position.

But consider the following:

1. The position we agree on is, you know, rather self-evident. Sort of like agreeing the sun is likely to rise tomorrow morning.

2. There’s an old quote, something about ‘Shakespeare, a million monkees and a million typewriters.’ Perhaps the same principle applies here.

3. The poster with whom we disagree. Refer back to number 1 above.

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Jeff,

Dustin Martin has (or had) a funny little uppercut swing. Not good for a guy with no power. Probably learned that with bad coaches while using the aluminum bat in HS or college.

He’s very eager and receptive to coaching, and the Twins are trying hard to straighten him out. He has tools. I like him, but he needs polish.

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

FJB says:

March 9th, 2009 at 4:11 pm

I’m jumping on the Pudge bandwagon. Gardy has not had issues with keeping three catchers before and Pudge would bring enough offense to potentially use all three guys at a time, letting Band Aid Joe start his transition to another position, although in my opinion he needs to simply toughen up a bit, not change positions.

What is it with Minnesota teams and their fragile players? Birk wouldn’t play with an injury unless he got a contract extension, Gaborik won’t play with a hangnail and Mauer is on injured area number 3 already. I long for the days of Jim Marshall!

LarryF says:

AaronK says:

March 9th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Yes, I am sure Pudge would be thrilled with riding the bench once Mauer is back in the lineup. The Twins have decent depth in the organization and has no need for Pudge. The only exception for me is if Mauer is gonna be out all year.

Craig Goes Deep says:

March 9th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Nobody’s talking about the fact the twins waited until December to get all this going? A chronic problem for Joe and we didn’t nip it in October, right when the season was done? Liriano, Neeshak, Bonser….I mean our track record isn’t so good here, about being aggressive, when someone says “hey this hurts”. Seems like we are always of the “wait and see” mode. Which usually means costing the team and the player additional games (or parts of seasons).
Regardless, this seems ominous.

alright… this has nothing to do with the Twins’ doctors. It is not a baseball-related injury. It is something he had all his life and started to bother him this fall. It is a rare condition and not a torn labrum that surgery is the way to go. Mauer has been seen by several docs over at Mayo and several tests needed to be done before they recommended surgery. It is not routine and it is not a sports medicine type of thing.

Just got back from a week down in Ft Myers. Went to three games, including the Puerto Rico game. Our pitching (starters especially) look great so far. Baker went against that AS lineup and shut them down. He made I-Rod look silly twice. Perkins tossed four shutout innings vs. the Reds and three previously against Boston.

The defense looks very good, especially on the IF. Lexi made at least three sparkling plays at 2B over the three games. Saw one HR total in three games, none by the Twins. Pitching dominated.

None of the rookies/minor leaguers stood out, but Valencia has a cannon of an arm over at 3B. Buscher looked good at 1B and was hitting fairly well, as was Kubel. Denard is off to a slow Spring start, but I think he’ll be fine. It was pretty cool to watch him up close in the cage, with Rod Carew throwing BP and giving him instruction.

This pitching staff has a chance to become what Atlanta had through the 90’s. Cruz probably would’ve helped, but I’m thinking not as much as some of you. His only year in the AL (’05) he got lit up pretty good. So while he can get some K’s, he’ll walk a fair share. And we don’t need that in a one-run game in the eighth inning.

I think this could be a very fun, last year in the Dome. Personally, I can’t wait until they blow that place up, but it should still be fun. I’ve been to 30 MLB ballparks over the years and the Dome ranks dead last.

Let’s hope the news on Mauer is good. That could change a lot of things.

I’d rather go with Morales than Pudge at this point. Pudge is a name, nothing else is left of him now.

This is, of course, one of the issues with not having a huge payroll, your margin for error is generally smaller. Now imagine this scenario if $20-25MM of a $100MM payroll was tied up in this one player……

shazel says:

March 9th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

Yeah I agree with the comparisons to the early 90’s Brave starting rotation. These guys might be as good. Will they be able to do it as long as all those guys from Atlanta? I really doubt it.

About Mauer, I’m not really concerned. He will heal. Will it be in time for opening day? Maybe not. Morales can flat out hit. Butera is a good back stop. Ramos can do it all but isn’t ready for the bigs yet. RedDog handles a pitching staff as good as anyone!

Slick Punto says:

March 9th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Yeah but Atlanta already had a good staff before Maddux was brought in. None of Atlanta’s initial staff had any established starters, which the same could have been said about the Twins staff last year. So I think the comparison is much more valid when put into that context.

March 9th, 2009 at 6:16 pm

Thank you for the compliment.

Even if they weren’t future HOFers at the time, I just don’t buy comparing every staff with a few good starters to the 90s Braves.

Glavine won 2 Cy Youngs in the 90s, Smoltz 1 and Maddux 4. I know the Twins have several good young pitchers (as do a few other clubs), but they don’t compare to the Braves.

saam,

Glavine won 2 Cy Youngs in the 90s, Smoltz 1 and Maddux 4.

you got to consider the ages of the respective parties:

Glavine won his first Cy Young at age 25
Maddux won his first Cy Young with the Cubs at age 26 (and with Atlanta at age 27)
Smoltz won his only Cy Young at age 29

Slowey and Liriano are 25 and Baker 27…

the Dragon says:

March 9th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

saam,

How many of those Cy Youngs were won in the 1st 2 years of any of those pitchers ML experience?

How many of those pitchers were projected HOF pitchers in their 1st 2 years of ML experience?

I don’t think the original post had any predictions of HOF members on the Twins staff. Which when I read it seemed appropriate. In fact until you brought up the 3 pitchers, I remembered Atlanta’s consistant, very good pitching, NOT who precisely contributed to that staff.

Regards,

TC says:

March 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm

If Mauer as a problem that will keep him out most of the year (I hope not), I think that the Twins should try to trade one of their outfielders (not Span) for an upgrade at catcher. Redmond is OK as a backup, but, if the Twins are going to be in contention without Mauer they need more depth/experience and power at catcher.

saam says:

March 9th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Dragon and thrylos

Good points and I agree with you. I just think it is an unrealistic comparison just because the Twins pitchers are young. The Braves had two of the top three CY finishers several times during the 90s and I just don’t see the Twins starters being that good or even that consistant. (The good news for the Twins is that I have been wrong about many things. I hope this is one of them.)

I’ve got to go and get some other things done. Thanks for the interesting discussion.

Morneau is 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a single so far against Italy.

BC.Beneke says:

as much as I like to rip Baby Jesus… this team could be a hurting franchise without him.

On a positive, having Ramos and Morales in the minors makes me a pretty happy guy.

I do think though that if Mauer is hurt this means Tolbert has almost no shot at making the team because the Twins may decide to carry 3 catchers…

Jon says:

Just add Joe Mauer’s name to the number of blundres from the horrible training staff. See the following;

1. Pat Neshak should of had surgery in May 2008.

2. Boof Bonser out for season because they could not find shoulder tear in October 2008.

3. Joe Mauer not having surgery on OCT 1 he had it on Dec 22.

The members of the training staff have cost this team 3 good players this year and they should all be fired for their incompetence…..

Are you talking about signing the same Pudge who calls for ALL fastballs with a runner on 1B so his steals-against pct. won’t be affected?

Why do you think the Tigers unloaded his selfish @$$?

thrylos98 says:

March 9th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Pudge? I’d rather see them bring back Brian Harper or something…

At this point, Ramos is probably at least as good as Pudge is.

Wilson Ramos hits .278 at class A and everybody starts thinking he’s a major league ballplayer and a future star.

Joe Mauer could hit .278 at class A with one arm tied behind his back.

sid says:

CGD,
“Joe Mauer could hit .278 at class A with one arm tied behind his back”

The question is:
What could Joe Mauer hit in MLB with one hand behind his back protecting his kidney?

Craig Goes Deep says:

sid,

Hmmm….I don’t know, but the question is profound….and funny.

thrylos98 says:

this is not a Mauer vs. Ramos discussion…

If Mauer is healthy he should be the starter and Ramos should be in New Britain. If Mauer is in the DL to begin this year, I think that Ramos should start over Redmond. That’s all…

Seriously the bashing of the team doctors needs to stop. Unless you are a doctor that looked at Boofs and Pats MRIs you need to shut up. They get second opinions from other teams doctors they don’t just flip a coin. And as far as Mauer goes the injury is NOT baseball related and the doctors at the Mayo clinic handled it. Call me crazy but I trust them handling Mauers health a little more than some guy playing doctor on a blog.

Just read all the comments for the day and these are my thoughts:

1) On the surface, Mauer looks like a wimp, but we don’t really know.
2) Thrylos - The Twins had something to do with Puckett’s glaucoma? For shame…
3) “Nicky was overmatched by Crain” My question is, who ISN’T Nicky overmatched by?

sid says:

“Thrylos - The Twins had something to do with Puckett’s glaucoma? For shame…”

Try reading that again, Jake.

thrylos was saying that blaming Mauer’s medical situation on the Twins was just as stupid as blaming Puckett’s glaucoma on the Twins.
In other words, the Twins were not responsible for either.

Yeah, the Public has a Constitutional Right to know WHAT is obstructing Joe Mauer’s kidney.

Rockies

seriously, are they morons? they want the world for an overrated 3B (atkins) and a has been closer (Street) - yes both are good but they wanted the world (Slowey? Young? I call shenanigans) for both, but then they go and sign Ford whose glove was average and his bat is horrific (he’s not even doing well in Japan for crying out loud).

It must be the thin air.

Do an MRI on his spine, seems to be some problem there. maybe we could find someone to donate a spine to Mauer. Perhaps David Eckstein, he’s getting close to retirement after two world championships, including 2006 WS MVP. He’s only 5′7″, so might be short for 6′5″ Mauer, but it would be better than not having one at all.
