Twins to brief the media about Mauer

Posted on March 11th, 2009 – 3:05 PM
By La Velle

The Twins have confirmed that Joe Mauer’s inflamed sacroiliac joint is not related to the kidney surgery he had in December. The Twins medical staff is pleased with how he’s recovered from that Dec. 22 surgery.

But the Twins have announced that GM Bill Smith and, perhaps, team physician Dr. John Steubs will meet with the media at about 6 p.m. Twin Cities time. Hopefully they will provide some details as to why Mauer is having pain in that area and what course of action will they take beyond boosting his medication. Stay tuned. Joe C. has been at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers all day, waiting for this moment….

Thanks for the update La Velle!

Any word on Punto’s elbow? I was on the WBC website and read that he was hit by a pitch in the elbow and was pulled out of team Italy’s final game. Hope he’s doing alright.

This is like the White House, La Velle — post an update saying there’s gonna be an update.

Breathtaking.

Ha!

That could have been Punto’s ego for making the huge error that sent Italy into a tailspin. Saying that, I do hope the guy is healthy. He is better than anything else we got with the possible exception of Ploufee.

The Twins would win more games if Harris played 162 games at SS than they would if Punto played 162 games at SS. Punto has the slight edge with the glove, but Harris is far superior with his bat.

This is more important than the White House! Maybe a sequel to “Broadcast News” in the works? Denzel Washington could play La Velle.

TJL says:

“Slight edge” - right. I like harris, but he is a horrible shortstop. Team ERA would jump significantly with him in there for 162

thrylos98 says:

about this Harris/Punto argument:

Punto’s Wins Above Replacement the last 3 years:

2006 2.0
2007: -0.9
2008: 3.2

Harris’ WAR the last 2 years:

2007: 2.0
2008: 2.3

Depending on which Punto will show up with the bat in 2009, it’s close to a wash, with a decent Punto beating a regular Harris and a regular Harris beating a 2007 Punto

Thank God.

I haven’t been able to breathe since learning about Joe’s backside.

Don’t just stand there, La Velle, do something!

SkipsScramble says:

To say he is “slightly better” with the glove and then go on to sa haris is “far superior” with the bat is a little ridiculous. Punto is a much better shortstop and depending on if he hits like 08 or 07 he can be only marginally worse than Harris at the plate.

TJL says:

March 11th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

I don’t know a ton about advanced stats, but fan graphs shows for 08 punto at 24.5 runs above average and harris at 10.1.

Plus, I hate watching an easily played grounder slide through for a hit - even worse than a head first slide into first.

It could be worse:

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP)—Seattle Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard was scratched from his scheduled start against Kansas City on Wednesday because of a sore butt.

Imagine the discussion, blogger medical advice, linked-medical articles, and illustrations we could be treated to.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/03/11/mariners.bedard.ap/index.html?eref=si_mlb

The headline: Mariners’ Bedard scratched with sore buttocks

Ewwww. Why would he be scratched with someone else’s buttocks, much less sore ones?

From the article itself: “This is more muscle soreness. He had some stiffness in there about four days ago…”

Eeewwww. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Whenever they trot the team doctor out, I always get nervous.

I much prefer Gardy or Smith saying “He’s got a boo-boo”.

thrylos98 says:

March 11th, 2009 at 5:48 pm

headlines in national articles, esp. from AP can be very interesting :) I wonder whether there was a correction on the “sore butt” one (there are often corrections in those)

Mr Thor says:

March 11th, 2009 at 6:01 pm

Were Mr. Bedard’s hemarroids the result of sitting on his butt while his fellows Canadians were eliminated in the WBC?

minnymadness says:

March 11th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

So are there sharp edges on sore butts to get scratched with? Where did he get scratched with this sore butt and who’s butt was it? something smells funny from this whole sore butt scratched pitcher

madman says:

March 11th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

maybe he should start catching instead of pitching, less contact with sore butts, less scratches from them!

Milldog says:

Just a thought when I read this… Do the Twins have a chiropractor on their medical staff? I as an athlete in high school I had a stretch of a few weeks with dabilitating lower back pain. After I tweeked it pretty bad, I went to a chiropractor who adjust my sacroilliac. The relief was almost instantaneous and I was back to where I was before the pain had ever started within a week. Just a thought if they haven’t looked into it.

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

March 11th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

It would be hilarious seeing the fact he used his being from Canada as a reason to go to Seattle, then skipping out on the WBC that he would get an embarassing minor injury like a sore butt…. That is what happens when you think you are better than your country… bah

(in all seriousness I hope it is a minor case of a sore butt and he is fine, nothing too bad, cause then karma can come back really bad on the Twins)

My own experience with a “bad” back has been cured with daily usage of an inversion table. This stretches out my spine & maintains a “good” back as long as I don’t miss more than a day or two. I “hang” just over half way between horizontal & vertical for about 5 minutes. My back would snap, crackle & pop like a famous cereal when I first started. :) Two co-workers have found the same benefits for their back also since they too got inversion tables. If Joe can not find any relief, I suggest he try inversion. La Velle, please pass on the suggestion. Thanks.

All you so called experts on here need to know something. It’s NOT Mr. Mauer’s back that is the problem, it’s his SACROILIAC JOINT ! !
And Mr. Bedard’s problem is in his GLUTEUS MAXIMUS MUSCLES ! ! !

Take my word on this because I mussa been home skoold by da world’s goodest teecher.

Carl says:

I can’t believe that some Twins fans have turned on Mauer so hard at this point. Somebody even started a trademauer.com website to promote his trade. This guy is an idiot.

TOOL says:

This could be very serious. I x-ray these SI jts occasionally. This kind of diagnosis is usually reserved for somebody much older or someone with rheumatoid arthritis.

so you mean that Mr. Bedard has a big ol’ butt?

Look he’s in the PROCESS of getting back into TOTAL body conditioning. He’s not just going to go from resting in recovery of X number of weeks to the world class athlete that Joe Mauer is. RELAX we need him in the end. April is pretty inconsequential in the grand scheme of the 162 game grind.

you go 10-20 in April and you are done for the season… Not that the Twins will do that, but every month matters.

La Velle,

for some reason the front page says that there is no radio in today’s game, but mlb.tv is broadcasting a “trn” feed (along with the Pittsburgh feed), which means that TRN will have audio of the game…

Tell that to the guys playing game 163 at the Cell last year.

I thought Shazel meant a “player” could bounce back from a poor April, not the whole team. But I did lay awake last night worrying about that 10-20 April record Thrylos mentioned!

If Mauer only has pain while running, then his HIPS are OUT! He needs an ADJUSTMENT by a CHIROPRACTOR!!
