Twins-Reds: Lineups

Posted on March 26th, 2009 – 4:40 PM
By La Velle

Sorry this is late. We had to wait for the manager to monitor all of batting practice and most of infield practice before he graced us with his presence.

Carlos Gomez could be available as early as tomorrow as he recovers from a sore back. Gomez said he could have played this week but the trainers told him it’s not worth pushing it.

Tonight’s game is televised on FSN. Bert Blyleven who was last seen on the bench for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic is one the scene. The Twins’ games against St. Louis on Sunday (on WFTC)  and Tampa Bay on Monday (on FSN) will also be televised.

There will be roster moves tomorrow morning. I would not be surprised if this one hits double digits.

Lineups

Twins: 1. Span, CF. 2. Casilla, 2B. 3. Harris, 3B. 4. Morneau, 1B. 5. Cuddyer, RF. 6. Young, LF. 7. Redmond, C. 8. Punto, SS. 9. Blackburn P. Ayala, Nathan, Henn, Duensing, Mijares, Keppel and Crain also on the list to pitch.

Reds: 1. Taveras, CF. 2. Hariston, SS. 3. Votto, 1B. 4. Phillips, 2B. 5. Bruce, RF. 6. Keppinger, 3B. 7. Dickerson, LF, 8, Hernandez, C. 9. Owings, P. Weathers, Lincoln and Cordero on the list to pitch.

is it worth skipping class to watch the first twins game of the year on FSN.

You need an excuse to skip class, Bri?

thanks, La Velle. I am sure that they will probably drop down to 28-29 or so, keeping Butera and Morales, Buscher and Tolbert and Dickey, Humber and Duensing (maybe)…

Jeff Keppinger. 49 strikeouts in 876 AB. No Joe Sewell, but pretty good. Especially by todays pathetic standards.

looks like we still have the same 3b coach!

Span has changed his stance and looks lost at the plate. Congradulations denard, you are now tired with Gomez for the team lead in walks. However he has 18 fewer at bats..

Now that Griffey and especially Dunn are gone, this Reds team looks much better.

LEN won’t the trucks be packed up with the players things and cars next week? This could be the last cut then

Looks like the spring training blahs have hit. This WBC extended spring training may be great for those involved since it gets their adrenaline up but it looks like the guys who have been in camp forever are starting to look worn/bored.

Maybe the cuts tomorrow will get them rejuvenated.

This has been a long, long ST.

Of course, it would be nice if Jesse Crain, the linchpin to the whole season, looked a little less bored.

I wish I had cable/Local stations to watch any of the games when I am at school. This sucks :(

Norwood

when no one can hit you, wouldn’t you be bored too?

USAFChief says:

Nobody can hit Crain? The Reds didn’t get the memo, apparently.

I think Jesse was bored so much he had to pitch like Juan Rincon just to keep himself interested.

I am still concerned about this bullpen…it is relying on Crain and Ayala to be the foundation. Two guys with serious surgery that haven’t yet shown they have recovered.

I’d feel a wee bit better if someone like Cruz was in the mix.

I will still bet that there will have to be a pretty big deal done for the bullpen before the trade deadline. This bullpen is built on spit, spiderwebs and string. It may hold, it may not.

rob, I hate to say it but they’re messing with Span’s stance. They want him to go opposite frickin field more. Unreal.

chief

his first bad outting of the spring. oh no, light the torches…

Like Carew. Unreal.

Morneau also needs to go to LF more. Keep the flight of the ball low. Raise his AVG, and quit hitting all those useless popups to the OF.

If he does that, he could have a monster year.

Willie Norwood says:

msm,

do you feel comfortable with two guys who have yet to show they’ve recovered from major surgery as your two set-up men? And having them backed up by a guy who had a horrid season (Guerrier) and a journeyman who had a half season of success(Breslow?)

Why assault Chief because he, like me, have questions about the solidity of the bullpen? Unless you think that spring training results are reliable predictors of season success.

I don’t think anyone should be barbecued because they have questions about the track record of the bullpen behind Nathan. As I said..it could be great(no recent results to indicate that) or sketchy (see 2008)

What do you think about the likely reliability of the BP? Perhaps you could comment without smart aleck remarks.

uncertainty is one thing, ripping a guy for one bad outting is another. and ‘assaulting’ chief is definitely not what I intended to do (honestly, he’s made a habit of ‘assaulting’ folks on this board as you say - by the way, assault is quite the strong word to use; all I did was point out that he needs to simmer down and see what Crain has in his next outting before he calls out the hook for Crain). if you also seem to remember, many folks on here make ’smart aleck remarks’, yet you call me out because i happen to disagree with your assessment.

both crain and ayala have shown flashes this spring. crain has a new and very effective pitch, and just happened to go back to what DOESNT work this evening. if he continues to develop his new pitch, he will be a force this season (he’s made even the best hitters look silly - see his yankees outting earlier in ST)

ayala has had one bad season (and that was last season). and he had many other issues to deal with, not just the surgery. honestly, he seems to be back to where he was 2 years ago when he had an ERA near 3. he’s even on record as saying he’s never felt better (at least I think that’s how he put it).

and if you are going on ‘recovering from surgery’ and ‘recent performances’ by crain and ayala, why aren’t you holding the same standard to breslow? he was has shown some steady improvement in his career, and when he came here, he ‘got it’. im not trying to say he will be as good, but to say he’ll completely digress or to say he’s just a journeyman guy who has only one good half season under his belt is an understatement.

please, this is a baseball blog, not a ‘barbeque pit’ (again, I did not ‘barbeque’ him, and honestly he probably wouldn’t care if I or anyone else here did).

that is all. Go twins

Do we yet have a timetable for Mauer’s return, if even just a rough estimate? Or is it still anytime between now and eternity?
