Twins-Rays: Pregame

Posted on April 27th, 2009 – 2:41 PM
By La Velle

I’m at the tables tonight while Joe C. gets some down time.

Twins relievers enter tonight’s game on a run of 10.0 scoreless innings and have posted a 2.45 ERA over their past seven games.

Justin Morneau is batting .358 with two homers and seven RBI over his past 12 games.

The Twins four save opportunities are tied for the fewest in baseball.

Lineups are not out yet. Repeat, the lineups are NOT available at the moment. Check back later.

3:58 P.M. UPDATE: Here’s the Twins’. Still waiting for the Rays.

5:20 UPDATE: Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said before the game that he would prefer to keep the hot-hitting Jose Morales on the roster even when Joe Mauer comes off the DL, as expected, on Friday. While it would be hard to carry three catchers on the roster, “it’s not impossible,” he said.

We’ll see. A lot of things can happen between now and Friday that could make it easier for Morales to stick around.  It’s not uncommon for someone to break down right when a roster move is about to happen.

Carlos Gomez will leave the team tomorrow for Florida, where his wife will have labor induced. He’ll re-join the team on Friday.

Jesse Crain played catch today and is expected to throw in the bullpen in a couple days. The Twins hope to activate Crain, out with a sore shoulder, on Sunday but could give Crain extra time if he needs it.

Geeze, Doc, Casilla was three years old when Gagne played. Put in Tovar.

DrDon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

trish….LaVelle loves it, he now knows lots of us are reading…Gotta love it. BTW, Kirby Puckett is on the 15 day DL with Turf Toe.

Where is the Rays line-up? Sure would be nice to figure out which 4 guys are going to keep Baker on the March to Blyleven. :)

DrDon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Percy…gotta have one new comer to the group…all of whom I have watched in the past…Hrbek is available as a PH or PR, if we can get him off the lake.

Late change to the lineup:

trish says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

If I didn’t have a presentation tomorrow I’d be down at the metrodome watching the game tonight. stupid school.

Hope we can do well against the Rays tonight. And to see Baker not leave pitches up. That would be a better sight to see.

Rob says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Why must we keep running Cuddy out there. ONE GOOD YEAR!!!!!!

DrDon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Halsey Hall is doing the color commentary between cigars, laughs, and coughs!!!!

lilbiscuit says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Cuddyer?

Dwade says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Interesting note: The Twins and Rays faced off in camp exactly one month ago. The Twins won 16-2 and Scott Baker got the win.

Repeat performance perhaps?

thrylos98 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

Glad to see Morales starting tonight instead of Redmond. I hope everyone here knows how I feel about Cuddyer, but this week it might make sense to sit Gomez down, if not for any other reason, but to just get him on an even keel mentally. The guy is an expectant father at 23 years old in a foreign country far away from his wife. Not a good situation to be.

Walter Johnson says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I’m sad. :(

Walter Johnson says:

AM says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I’m calling it…Baker will lower his ERA tonight. Less confident about this, but also predicting…fewer HRs than in either of his first two outings.

Just don’t give Burrell anything good.

thrylos98 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:27 pm

AM,

I hope so. But I so hoped that CM Wong will do in his third start. He stunk up my fantasy team.

DrDon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Well, so much for the dream team, everyone has got to get into today, way too soon. relax, sports fans!!!

all the young ones on here that never heard halsey go into one of his spastic coughing laughing fits you’ll never know how a real classic color guy can make a game fun.
anybody remember when they gave away the wood bats and the fans started pounding them on the metal floor on the upper decks and about drove halsey nuts?

Eddie Shore says:

Go-Go and Harris found out just how damaging it is not to perform when called upon to do so on a Sunday afternoon.

How enlightening to know it’s okay not to perform the other 6 days of the week (Cuddy and Punto)

LaVelle - Who are the umpires working tonight’s game?

gobbledygookguy says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

disco danny ford a classic, crossed homeplate backwards. actually a decent ballplayer.

BILL says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I have been trying to tell the Twins organization for two years that Jose Morales should be on the Major League roster. I wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Twins to carry three catchers as long as Redmond is still in the mix. Mauer could rest more often and Morales is certainly an outstanding hitter. As a switch hitting catcher, Morales could be invaluable to the team in the future. His defensive skills need work, but his outstanding hitting ability puts him as one of the best young catchers in baseball. He led the International League in hitting a couple of years ago and was the League’s all start catcher. The guy definately should remain on the Twins roster.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

I agree with BILL.

Is Go-Go on paternity leave yet?

Why is cuddy in RF again?

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

5. Morales
6. Young
7. Crede
8. cuddy

Gardy says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

You guys need to get off Cuddy’s back he’s my rightfielder for the rest of this year and next case closed!!

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Actually I wouldn’t mind plucking Morales in batting him 3rd and move the rest down a spot.

He’s a good hit and run guy, probably.

Andy says: says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

And get off Baker’s back…tonight he will not stink up the place.

SweetOne says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

AM,

That’s not saying much as Baker actually lowered his ERA in his 2nd outing as well.

Walter Johnson says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Baker will have his best performance of the year. No more than three home runs tonight.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

“You guys need to get off Cuddy’s back he’s my rightfielder for the rest of this year and next case closed!!”

Yup, Gen. Gardy has spoken.

Meanwhile back at West Point, we will be analyzing.

thrylos98 says:

Here is some food for thought:

Casilla’s OPS is smaller than Harris’ SLG%

jon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I WISH I could have gone to a game at the old Met Stadium.

You left out Crede and Casilla.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Casilla looked okay at the plate Sat. I was a little surprised he didn’t start yesterday.

DrDon says:

April 27th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

For those that were never at the old Met…You are in for a treat at the new Target Field next year. I quit going to Dump games years ago, Twins, Gophers, Vikings. I shall do my best, as old and decrepit as I am, to get to the new TCF Gopher Stadium, and to the new Target Field. It gets no better than the real McCoy, sports fans. The good thing is…all of you young ‘uns have a real life treat coming into your futures. How do I know that??? Been there done that. Gotta Love It.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I’m glad DrDon is having nostalgic fun. I like the current Twins lineup though.

Wish Punto were a little better, and cuddy would be benched some. And perplexed by Baker.

But that ain’t half-bad, cuz the rest of the lineup has my confidence.

SweetOne says:

April 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

DrDon,

I am old enough, but I’ve never been to the old Met (at least not that I recall).

I was at a Pre-Season NFL game at the old Met before the Vikings/Twins were in existence. It was an exhibition game between the “original” Chicago Cardinals versus the Green Bay Pukers. I would say that was about 1958, when the Minneapolis Millers were a farm club of the New York Giants. Willie Mays I say even, playing for the Millers. I go way back, even when the Millers played at what at that time was called “Bloomington Stadium”, located where the Mall of America is now.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

trish, from another blog:

“Yeah, I sure am happy to have Kubel on my Fantasy team that’s for sure”

And Gen. Gardy is sure happy to have Cuddy on his fantasy team too.

I hope Cuddy breaks out. My advice to him is to simply not swing at anything that looks like it’s on the outside part of the plate……just rest your bat on your shoulders and watch it go low and outside.

Cuz ya know that’s where they’re gonna be pitching you.

Just sit on the inside pitch and cream it to left-center.

A complete flip-flop from his Fri night comments.

But I don’t think any less of him for it. He has a stressful job in a bureacracy and has to make immediate public statements.

He just gets a little headstrong once in a while.

I am so old I have one foot in the coffin and another foot on a banana peel.

Anyone remember the Millers? I still think of Met Stadium as “new”, even though I know it’s long gone.

I recall at about eight years old watching baseball while sitting next to some codger chomping on a stogie and drinking a brew (poored from a bottle into a paper cup). I watched him keep score and tried my best to get my face in the path of the wafting cigar smoke. I wanted to smoke that stogie and down that beer in the worst way. Ah, the pleasures of baseball from yesteryear.

Dr. Don - If you’re going to include a pinch hitter on your all-time team, please consider Randy Bush.

That guy was unstoppable as a pinch hitter in 1991. I still remember a home run that he hit in the ninth inning at Fenway to send a game into extra innings. He hit two long ones into the seats that were just foul, then he nailed one fair. It was great.

Craig Lays One Down says:

You are correct, Craig. Carew was at first by that point (though I believe he still played a couple of games at second). But I wanted the version of Carew who hit .388, and I didn’t want to leave MVP Justin Morneau off of the team. Plus, I would hate to have to put Chuck Knoblauch at second!

Gomez needs to play, whether up here or in AAA. The problem I have is that Cuddy is not producing at all. If Cuddy and Gomez are hitting at about the same level then Gomez needs to play every day. His defense is so much better than Cuddy, plus it upgrades the defense at three positions. Gomez in CF is better than Span in CF. Span in LF is better than Young in LF. Young in RF is better than Cuddy in RF. Finally, Gomez has upside. Cuddy doesn’t.

If I was Gomez and I saw that I was not playing because someone was playing better, I could accept it. But Cuddy is not playing better.

Put 1969 Killebrew at 3B on the all-time team even though he played often at 1B that year. He never did much as a DH.

I think the all-time infield is:
1B Carew - 1977

3B Killebrew - 1969
SS Versailles - 1965

I saw Baker pitch 4 times in ST and, granted it’s on tv tonight, he just doesn’t look the same. He is either in one of those ruts (golfers will appreciate this) where you know what you’re doing wrong but can’t stop doing it(think decelerating on your chips/lifting your head before impact on your swing) or he’s got a physical problem. He hasn’t been the same guy at all this year.

We really need this guy to be himself. If he’s not injured then we may need to bring Dr. Bob Rotella in for a consult.

Good reading on the old Met. I went to opening game in 61. Went to alot of games back then. Anyone remember Randy Merriman? He had some talk show on the radio and would give away prizes. We’d sneak in from the left field bleachers and go down behind home plate and talk to him on the radio all the time. It was a blast back then. And always went home with a bunch of baseballs and bloody shins from batting practice, after chasing them under the stands and banging my legs on the iron cross bars.

I used to ump, my friends. Any line drive down the line is the PLATE UMPS call. 3rd base ump “f”d up, got in the way, no chalk flew, ball foul. Cost us 2 runs on 3rd base umps ineptitude. I look for Gardy to get fed up pretty soon, come out storming and yelling and screaming and shouting and getting his ass kicked out. We have been hosed on many more calls this year, than we have gotten. Time to change it up.

Bill Brasky says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

Dr. Don -

You are incorrect. In MLB with 4 umpires, it is the 3rd base umpire’s call on a ball down the line like that. Only with a 2 man crew - or certain situations with a 3 man crew - is that the home plate ump’s call.

Kimberly says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

That ballboy in the bullpen looks like Louis from Bad News Bears. He can’t field a ground ball to save his life. I have actually been at a few games where has gotten smoked by a ball. Wonder who he knows to get a job like that? Must be from Edina

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

ESPN noticed Baker’s weak follow-through his first game this year.

Now, it looks like he’s bending okay. But it still doesn’t look like a strong follow-through to me.

And just now, he didn’t follow through as much (bending towards the 1B side) when he threw an inside pitch.

So, his delivery isn’t uniform….which means batters can read him.

Which means his mechanics are still early ST.

Bill Brasky says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

I should add that the home plate ump can overrule the call, but in this case, the ball was fair so no such call was needed.

first of all, I have said nothing bad to or about trish, only some of kimberly’s childish comments from some of us oldtimers. If you have no memories of yesteryear, do not complain about those of us that do. Your day will come, my young friends. The thing we have learned is, the good outweighs the bad, and you will eventually learn that. And if Kimberly is from Moorhead, as I am, there are more good things than bad.

Jason says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Yes T…I’ve been chirping for weeks now about when on Earth our $8 mil rightfielder will draw a walk.

You realize how silly that sounds asking for Crede to hit his HRs with men on base, right? I’d say 3 HRs in 57 at-bats looks pretty darn good on this team…he’s already tripled Mike Lamb’s 2008 total.

Hmmm…?

T says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

We’ll take it Punto!!!

Does Span bunt this time? I say no down three in the 7th…

T says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Terry: Mauer belongs in the starters spot if he’s healthy. I’m starting to look at Casilla and wondering when he’s going to get dropped down. Harris is tapping his foot in the dugout thinking that #2 spot looks mighty tasty (for now anyway)

Corey says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

If Denard Span hits into a double play, I’m going to scream.

If not, I’m going to scream anyways, because it’s a given that Casilla will hit into a double play next then.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

“Blah blah blah….whine whine cry…bitch bitch bitch.”

Whoa, contraire, T.

Cuddy has taken tons of walks away from himself. And every AL pitcher knows it.

Showing more patience at the plate is PRECISELY what he needed.

T says:

April 27th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

There’s not ONE intelligent baseball person using batting average, by itself, as an argument for anything, anymore.

Oooh. Other 2006 All-Stars…maybe some of these guys could help the Twins.

Barry Zito (I’m sure the Giants would love to pass him off)
Mark Redman (think he and Zito could bolster the pen?)

David Eckstein (he’s been in FOUR!)

Heck, I think the Twins were actually looking into Eckstein at one point this offseason!

2nd most in the OF that year even (Hunter with 28, Kubel with 13)

Since that’s the magical year.

I think we’ll be okay if we can get a Crede HR here followed by a Cuddyer walk….let’s score some runs, boys!! I will shout I love Cuddy if he clicks that RBI number up…

Speaking of RBI, T, as long as we’re having some good-natured fun tonight…I haven’t seen you cite Punto’s 4 RBI as evidence of his solid hitting lately like you did two weeks ago…

I haven’t seen you cite Punto’s 4 RBI as evidence of his solid hitting lately like you did two weeks ago…

Well that’s because you’ve chosen All-Star game appearances and HRs as the measure of success tonight instead of RBIs.

But since you asked, it’s still more than Casilla and Harris combined. Just sayin’.

And in the spirit of good natured fun, why do you keep changing the subject to some other player once somebody has a counter point?

First it we were talking about Crede. Then you changed the subject to Cuddyer. And then you changed the subject to Punto.

Don’t want to bother coming up with counterpoints? So instead you get condescending?

T, to address your point on Crede:

We all knew about Crede’s health issues coming into the year…so far it’s yet to be a factor. The guy is hitting for a low average in his first 60 ABs, but he’s done that his entire career (.256). We brought him in here to hit some long flies and hopefully he’ll stay healthy and do just that.

Anyway, I apologize for my mood…I think we’re all a little sour…Twins getting killed and the game wasn’t in HD like it was supposed to be.

I will say the FS North PR staff pulled out an old trick early in this game when Ron Coomer suggested that Cuddyer was tearing the cover off the ball in BP earlier.

I seem to remember the same thing being said when Rondell White was struggling during his time here in Minny.

Baby steps, I guess. A lot of bad bounces didn’t go our way tonight, among other things…

romer says:

So, positives…..

Baker goes about 100 pitches, Coom says he sees no signs that it’s his shoulder, 3 of his 5 innings tonight he shut down the Rays 1-2-3.

Yesterday’s start by Perk wasn’t a disaster either. So, 4 nondisastrous starts in a row (after quite a few disastrous starts this year).

I’m thinking Frankie will fall into line too tomorrow.

So the starting pitching will at least have some of their ducks in order for Mauer’s return.

drgobble says:

April 27th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

see you guys tomorrow have work to do tonight.

Cruz says:

Another outstanding effort by the local nine. Pathetic bunch of losers, only bested by the pathetic bunch of bloggers who accept this crap that the FO puts on the field. The Twins know they have to spend nothing on this team, and morons will still come to the park, hell, they don’t have to spend anything, and these same morons will build them a new stadium. They also know that the scribes who should be getting paid to ask honest, tough questions, won’t do it because they don’t want to rock the boat.

romer says:

April 27th, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Lastly, the offense is pathetic and needs the batting champ for def-sure.

But we have to watch the three C’s for sure: Cuddy, Casilla, Crede.

This team without the spark of Gomez and Casilla looks pretty lackluster.

I hope Gardy has a three-way with these 2 guys as he says goodbye to Go-Go before he ships out tomorrow.

This 4-man OF is a bust so far.

romer says:

Geez, Gardy coughing like he’s coming down with the swine flu…..

thrylos98 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 9:30 pm

some positives on the pitching side of this game:

*Baker pitched his best game on the season and did not give any home runs

*R.A. Dickey was effective in relief in all but one pitch

*Morillo hit triple digits in the gun at least in 3 pitches, he did not issue a walk and threw 9 or 12 pitches for strikes

*Gardy did not burn Nathan or Mijares in a blow out.

Tomorrow is another day and the bats will make it happen.

Sorry I haven’t chimed in to DrDon’s repeated statements in recent days about the new park coming next year.

When I’ve been in the Dome, when I watch on TV, and even when I see still[-shot photos of games at the Dome, I always have the slight feeling that we’re watching an exhibition.

You know, like it’s not real baseball.

Cuddy’s baggy experience tonight is just one small example.

If our fighting guys overseas in the military wanted to get a pickup game going in an airplane hangar, it would like a game at the Dome. Like an exhibition.

Right field is a joke, pure and simple. We’re lucky the baseball gods let us win in ‘87 and ‘91.
