Delmon Young to temporarily leave team; Jose Morales to replace him

Posted on May 14th, 2009 – 9:27 PM
By La Velle

The Twins are expected to place outfielder Delmon Young on the family medical emergency list and call up catcher Jose Morales to replace him on the roster.
Young, following the Twins’ 6-5 victory over Detroit on Thursday, left for California to be with his family. A family member is very ill.

Players can be placed on the family medical emergency list (formerly the bereavement list) because of serious illness or death in the family. That player must stay on the bereavement list at least three days and no more than seven days.

Morales opened the season on the major league roster but was optioned to Rochester when Joe Mauer came off the disabled list on May 1. He was hitting .267 in nine games with Class AAA Rochester when he was pulled from the lineup before Rochester played Indianapolis on Thursday.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said before Thursday’s game that Young was dealing with a migraine. Now we know why.

I’ll be praying for DY and his family in this difficult time.

Yikes. I hope everything turns out OK.
On the upside (if there can be one) it might be nice timing to have a third catcher, with Mauer playing basically every day and Red catching 13 yesterday. You never want to see anyone seriously ill though.

Hey, Shawn in Bingtown…. Just out of curiosity, is there any chance that this is a way of bringing up Morales, give Delmon a break, and then DL RedDog????? Nasty thought, I know, but………………………….

Hope everything with the family works out, it has to be tough being away from the family when someone gets sick.

prob not, but you never know. maybe after 3-7 days they will cut Ayala, send Buscher down though. Hard to say

Little Miss…..Been there, done that. I was a days drive away when my Mother passed away, I was allowed in my job, 3 days of bereavement/family emergency leave. So when my Mom passed away, I had to time a day drive, day of the funeral, and a day drive back home. That is all I got. You are very right, it is tough.

Shawn…the reason I ask is this…Delmon was kept out tonight due to a migraine. Now this, family emergency. I personally think it is more than we know yet, but time will tell.

all 4 grandparents of mine passed my senior year of college…. and I was unable to go home for any of their services…. I was able to see one when they were in the hospital but they died right when I landed back at school, so I was talking more than a drive away like Minny to Cali

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

May 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

the migraine was more likely a cover story so he can get arrangements together, it seems like he wasnt in the right mind to play so they just said migraine so it wouldn’t distract from the game (atleast that is what the end of the post made it seem)

Arizona Joe says:

I’m a Minnesotan trapped in the desert of AZ. Have been for 8 years and can’t shake the Twins nor Vikings from my DNA. (It was easy to dump the T-Wolves!) Thanks to satellite TV I rarely miss a game, including today’s incredible comeback against the Tiggers! What a game! I knew Crede was a good move….

Anyway, young Delmon Young, its unfortunate that life has to interfere with baseball, but, that’s life. Be big at home, keep the chin up, and Godspeed to the one who has fallen ill. Hope to see you back soon. I’ve been a fan since you became a Twin and have been hopeful for you to experience supreme success!

Sunny and 103 degrees today!

But for you idiots, I’m sure Momma took ill so that they could call up Morales and then cut Ayala. Give me a break.

Arizona Joe says:

May 14th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Little Miss- At this time of year it’s a DRY heat. Actually very nice. 103 here is like 85 there. BUT, come August in what they call the Monsoon here the humidity climbs and gets to be difficult. That’s when I fly up to the Twin Cities and then up to the cabin in McGregor, MN. for a little Walleye fishing and the Twins on the radio….

Dr. Don, C’mon on down. The economy has the local resorts empty and offering significant discounts for those willing and able. Its weird, but a close friend in the Twin City area goes by the handle of Dr. Don. He lives in Victoria, just south of Minnetonka.

Go Twins!

DrDon says:

AZ Joe…” At this time of year it’s a DRY heat.” I always laugh at that, when people talk about our 20 below zero up here in the winter, and I say…..”But it’s a DRY cold” Hot is hot, cold is cold. hee hee hee…..

Also, I think it’s time the Twins made up their mind about Redmond vs. Morales. If I was Bill Smith, I’d make Redmond a coaching offer after the season and make it clear Morales is on the roster next year. Redmond is just too old.

WJ,
“Does Morales’s call-up count against his remaining options?”

Options are counted in years.
Morales can go up and down an unlimited number of times this year and it counts as ONE OPTION YEAR.
His 2009 option was used up when he was optioned to Rochester earlier.

I am just glad owners and teams are more understanding of player’s personal lives than in the old days. Things like being allowed to be present at the birth of a child and to be with a sixk family member were unheard of unless you were a major star.

Grannyslam says:

May 15th, 2009 at 9:54 am

“Some” owners and teams are more understanding, Walter. I think the Vikings had a player take too long for a family emergency and was fined. It turned into a Public Relations mess, because in no way can these things be connected to performance.

News of Mrs. Young reminds me of a Momma Puckett story. She would not allow Kirby to have a job when he was a kid. He said she told him his “job” was to “study and play ball.” I always thought that was good advice.

Honering Carl Pohlads sons who run the team with fan support when they dont do the best job that they can do is ridiculous

Relief support was well known entering the season. They ask Gardy and the players to do the best that they can do and what do they do in return, ignore the team needs that they have.

When you see the Twins supporting the community with money you know they are making boatloads of money and need to get rid of some of it for tax purposes

I dont like the ownership of the Twins and I really dont like the fans not holding them accountable. It is sad

Oh yeah, and I think it i pathetic and embarrassing to hear fans say they are “holding ownership accountable.” How stupid. If you don’t like the team, do something else with your time. That will send a message.
Ownership wants enthused, loyal fans, so they will attempt to field a good team. That is what they do. They have a model here that has worked well. If you don’t like it, follow another team. It is THEIR business. You and dont get to “hold them accountable.”
A lot of sports fans these days strike me as grown-up versions of spoiled children with entitlement issues. Maybe I am alone in my principles.
