Minor league news: Delaney to Rochester

Posted on June 2nd, 2009 – 12:58 PM
By La Velle

Jim Mandelaro of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle has sent word that the Twins have promoted righthander Rob Delaney to Class AAA Rochester. In 26 games, Delaney was 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA. In 36 innings, he walked six, struck out 40 and gave up 32 hits. Opponents were batting .242 against him.

Delaney took part in his first major league spring training camp this year, giving up two runs in four innings of work.

A spot for Delaney opened up when lefthander Mike Gosling took advantage of an out clause in his contract and got his release. He was the classic vulture, going 7-1 with a 4.37 ERA in 21 games -all in relief. He was tied for the international league lead in wins.

Hopefully this is just a quick stop on his way to the Metrodome sometime around the 4th of July!

La Velle,

Does this mean we could see Carlos Gutierrez move up to AA??

Now hopefully Dinkelman and Valencia will follow soon.

Gosling’s W-L was incredible. His ERA wasn’t great, but I do think he pitched better than it indicates.

Good for Delaney. I think he’s ready. I agree with Josh that Valencia is ready. I think we are going to see a few moves going forward.

Had to laugh when I read the phrase “classic vulture.” For some reason Tony Fiore popped into my head. Who are other former Twins’ vultures? Carl Willis? Juan Berenguer?

Josh Johnson says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I wish a few other pitchers would have left before Gosling, his FIP is 3.11, but overall I’m just happy Delaney is finally getting the call-up.

For Delaney, it’s certainly long overdue.

Glad for Delaney, Bring up Dinkelman and Valencia, for sure. Singleton can move up to AA. Move Luke Hughes to the OF, permanently.

Dunno what Gosling is thinking..maybe he read that the “next ready” guys were named to be Duensing and Keppel, so he had little chance with the Twins.

So it goes. Just don’t send Swarzak back to AAA please!

The Big Sweat vultured his share of wins by recording 1 out on a couple of pitches…

Rocky Simon says:

What bout Valencia. Seems he has tamed AA pretty well and needs to be at AAA. I sure they are wondering what to do w/ Hughes. (Who currently is on the DL) but they know realistically that Hughes will NEVER play 3rd base at the major league level…..NEVER. And that is straight from the Twins FO. He has hands of stone….they have tried him there but will not play 3rd at the Bigs.
Really don’t need him at 2nd base because of Tolleson and Dinkleman…..And Casilla And Tolbert.
Seems to be a log jam…….

I think he’s going to go home and take a nap, then tonight he plans to have dinner at a seafood place and watch the new Terminator movie.

I don’t know what his plans are for the weekend, but I’ll let you know if I find out.

I don’t think that qualifies as a log jam. Those players are all lightweights. More of a twig jam.

Great to see Delaney up in Rochester F.I.N.A.L.L.Y

that said, the Red Wings with the promotion of Henn and Mijares and the cutting of Pigniatello have no lefties in the pen. I anticipate Reid Santos to move to the pen from the rotation (he is a better reliever anyways) and someone from AA (Fox? DeVries?) to move to Rochester’s rotation with Hendrickson departing for greener pastures

a twig jam may even be an over statement. time for somebody to step up a take the spot at the “major league level” good job lots of good benefits somebody needs to grab the bull by the horns and all those other sayings.

or .. trade for dan uggla, how would a 30 hr 100 rbi guy look stuck between the lefties we have?

Josh Johnson says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Thrylos, since (as you mentioned) they have no lefties, I’d anticipate Ryan Mullins getting another opportunity instead of Fox or DeVries.

SethSpeaks says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 3:15 pm

my guess is that someone will sign Gosling very quickly. He’s left-handed and has been OK this year. He’s got big league experience. I think he could go to some organizations and compete for a big league job now.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Mullins doesn’t get to face Binghamton in AAA. It seems he only really has success against Binghamton.

Jake says:

SethSpeaks says:

” I’d anticipate Ryan Mullins getting another opportunity instead of Fox or DeVries.”

Thrylos meant out of the bullpen where Santos could go. Duensing is a lefty in the rotation.

Seth is losing Gosling an actually loss to the farm system and eventually the big club?

SethSpeaks says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 3:45 pm

“Seth is losing Gosling an actually loss to the farm system and eventually the big club?”

Probably not a loss to the big league club. Certainly a loss for Rochester though. He provided some solid innings out of the bullpen. But this is smart for him. He’s smart enough to know that Mijares and Henn are there. Duensing would probably be called up before him as well as Delaney and even Slama. I think he could pitch for other big league teams, so he’s wise to take his shot and see what offers he gets.

Joe the First says:

Icon,

Gosling added the ‘g’ at the end, because it’s more classy. That’s why the guy eats at an ocean-view restaurant in Rochester. (Super eyesight on the guy.)

Classic vulture all time for Twins was Bill (Soup) Campbell when he won like 16 or 17 games as a reliever back in 1977? Going on memory, not net search.

thrylos98 says:

June 2nd, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Gosling will be 29 this September… not much or a prospect at this point, and I suspect that the Rochester fans would probably be delighted to see Delaney :)

now, if only they were to give him the closer’s job…

Campbell won like 16 or 17 games as a reliever one year for the Twins.

delawaretwinsfan says:

Crain had lot’s of wins one year (I don’t see that happening anytime soon, or ever again). They need to promote Valencia to AAA so we know whether he’s capable of starting in the Bigs for 2010. Dinkelman would be a nice promotion so we have another middle infield option. Getting pretty tired of the Punto, Tolbert, Casilla, Harris options. Nice to see Tolleson doing well so far in Rochester. Guttierez needs to move up quickly. I suspect he ends up in Rochester by year’s end. Still hoping Slama gets a promotion but he’s got some control issues before he makes the next level.

Nobody ever complains about the cheap twins not taking Mark Prior with that first overall pick anymore? Go figure.
HAVE FUN !!! GO TWINS !!!

La Velle says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 9:01 am

Um, the Twins selected Mauer and gave him a $5 million bonus, what’s cheap about that?

I want the Twins to be more aggressive in free agency. I really want them to compete for Latin American prospects better. But it’s so easy to spend other people’s money, isn’t it?

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 9:12 am

Hypothetical advance thinking:

If Cuddyer needs to go on the DL either because he needs that long to heal or because the Twins can’t play short-benched, what is the move?

Do you do a straight replacement, RF for RF, and bring up Winfree?

Do you bring up Morales, who helps the catching/Mauer rest equation but doesn’t play another position?

Do you bring up Hughes, who replaces some of Cuddyer’s pop but doesn’t regularly play the outfield, is a liability at third and adequate at 2nd?

Not saying that Cuddyer will need to go on the DL, but as LEN3 pointed out in the print version today…it sounds a lot like prior times (it’ll only be a few days, wait till the swelling goes down and it’ll be fine)

What other options are there? What are your preferred ones? Do you need to know if Kubel can play the OF to help decide?

thrylos98 says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 9:19 am

La Velle,

The Twins got to be a little smarter about how they are spending their money (and this year they have been, to give them credit).

They threw about $12 million down the drain last season (2 seasons of Mike Lamb, 1 season of Craig Monroe, 1 season of Juan Rincon), which could be used in player development (like signing these Latin American guys). I suspect that this year they threw some money that way: The DSL Twins roster is overhauled by more than 50%, about 15 kids are 19 and younger (including 2 16 year olds) and they are singing bigger kids for OF and pitching (The usual DSL Twin was topping at 6′; now you see kids at 6′3″ and 6′4″. I think that they are trying this year.

I really think that free agency is somewhat of a different story: I think that they can be smarter (like do not sign a middle infielder utility player to an $8.5M contract), but I doubt that they will go after the big free agents that can make a difference, because they will cost draft picks. On the other hand, the Lambs and the Ortizes of the world should not be signed…

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 9:25 am

One additional consideration…Winfree isn’t on the 40-man, Pridie is. He’s actually been better than Winfree the last ten games, but doesn’t flash much power, which might be a consideration since if Cuddy’s out only Crede is a threat from the right side.

TwinsNotesGuy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 10:23 am

Glad to see Delaney finally moved up. Looking for Gutierrez to get moved up to AA soon, he keeps owning everyone at Fort Myers, though he doesn’t necessarily pitch deep into games.

But I think that can be attributed to being cautious with him…

Hope Delaney gets here by August…

2/10 guys I thought might make their MLB debut have done it so far this year: Duensing and Swarzak, Thinkin Delaney will be next.

Valencia and Revere are tearing up their leagues and should be considered for promotions as well. (though Revere is a single-only machine, but steals a lot of bases)

Shaitan says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 am

If Cuddyer goes on the DL, they play one of their other 4 OFs in his place and call up a benchwarmer.

Shaitan says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 11:55 am

This is exactly why the Twins haven’t traded anybody yet.

bart says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Punto has definately proven himself to be inconsistent and unreliable. Casilla seems to be only a work in progress who continues to make mental mistakes. Harris is probably the team’s best bet for a regular shortstop since he can think clearly, hit, and field the position. The Twins are very slow learners about their need for middle infielders. It would be good for the fans if they would bring up some minor leaguers and allow them to gain experience at the Major League level. Hughes and Valencia could occupy 2B and 3B respectively. That would add alot more power to the lineup. The Twins would not be saddled with a meak hitting bottom half of their lineup and thereby score more runss.

LARTWINFAN says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Lavelle
I meant cheap twins sarcastically at the people who were saying that about them when they wouldn’t spend more to get Prior. Because Mauer is doing so great, but I remember the uproar against them for not taking Prior, so I was poking fun at those that called the twins cheap. I’ve always hated it when someone calls them cheap!!!
HAVE FUN !!! GO TWINS !!!

coyotetom says:

Let Cuddy be “day-to-day” on the dl and bring up one of the AAA hotshot infielders to give him a good 10 day look. Something has to improve there for us to move up - especially the bottom 4 hitters.

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 2:27 pm

coyotetom–

I have no intent to be snarky. However, if you can find a hotshot infielder at Rochester ready for the big top let Bill Smith know.

Tolleson may be one, but he just got there.

Crain would look good in a Nationals uniform says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Bill Smith has made so many lunkhead moves like the Santana for a bag of rocks trade and the Garza/Bartlett fiasco (coupled with Monroe, Lamb, Livan, Eddie G, etc) that he won’t make any trades for fear of being exposed even more as the worst GM in MLB. Giving LNP the increased salary and re-signing him says a lot about his baseball acumen.
Now is the time to get rid of Punto, call the Garza/Bartlett swap a disaster and deal Delmon, send Buscher down to AAA, and bring up some young players or make a GOOD trade for prospects.
I hope this is Smith’s last year, anyone in the real non-baseball world would have gotten a pink slip a long time ago if they performed at his level.

Bob says:

June 5th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Smith is well on his way to becoming the Twins very own McHale. Crede was his best work and that’s a no-brainer that he almost screwed up. The failures are obvious. The Twins are in danger of wasting the career of one and maybe two Hall of Famers by not building a full team around them (sound familiar to any KG fans).

Moss says:

June 10th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Gosling’s a vulture? That’s quite the transformation…

Nice pun, LaVelle.
