Twins-Tribe: Lineups

Posted on June 3rd, 2009 – 4:31 PM
By La Velle

The Twins bullpen has posted a 1.54 ERA over the past 13 games and has held opponents to a .197 batting average.

Joe Mauer has 44 hits, 12 homers and 35 RBI through 29 games. The last three players to have at least 40 hits, 10 homers and 35 RBI 30 games into a season were A-Rod (2007), Junior Griffey (1997) and Eric Davis (1987).

Still no Michael Cuddyer, but Joe Crede is back after fouling a pitch of his left knee over the weekend.

Morneau note: Justin Morneau, finally, has submitted his blog entry. I’ll give you a head-ups when we’re ready to post it.

Update: Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said that Cuddyer’s finger is doing much better. There’s still some swelling, and Cuddyer said he’ll wait until the swelling is all gone before he tries baseball-related activities. But there no longer appears to be concerns about DL-ing Cuddyer.

Crede batting 4th? Welcome back Joe!

Andy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 pm

I like Crede hitting fourth to split up the lefties. Kubel has been struggling lately so you have to mix it up with no Cuddy. I have a bad feeling that Cuddy might be headed to the DL but I hope I am wrong.

No problems with this lineup…

“The Twins bullpen has posted a 1.54 ERA over the past 13 games and has held opponents to a .197 batting average.”

La Velle, please find a piece of wood and give it a knock or two!

Except for putting Span in left and Cuddyer in right if/when he returns, this is the line-up that I would love to see every night.

At least we’re not the Indians. That Cleveland lineup is brutal.

gobbledygookguy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:41 pm

lets hope the bats can pick it up a little, only 4 runs off a guy with a 10 era isn’t very good. my guess is lee will be a little harder to score on. half this line up needs to pick up the pace or it will be a long road trip ahead.

Andy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:41 pm

The bullpen goes as the starting pitching goes. When Slowey and Blackburn throw like they have the past two games your bullpen is going to look good with guys like Guerrier and Mijares bridging the gap to Nathan. We need to get Baker and Frankie going now and we will be just fine. Hope Swarzak can throw a solid game tonight as I’m not sure what this lineup will do against Cliff.

Kubel hitting less than .200 against lefties…still think Buscher should be here over Morales?

stinky says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:49 pm

the yahoo sports page says cuddy can’t even grip the bat.

Kay says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:50 pm

If Cuddyer is headed to the DL I certainly hope that DY can find his swing soon.

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:51 pm

Surprised Kubel is in the lineup vs. tough lefty and that Redmond isn’t catching and Mauer DH’ing. Tomorrow is a noon game and Carmona is a righty…thought they’d “DH rest” Mauer tonight and catch Redmond. Oh well…if I had been right I’d have begun to wonder if I was too much in Gardy’s head. Scary thought.

Jason says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:53 pm

great point, Fredo. Shows Gardy’s confidence in Kubel, I guess. Let’s see if he can reward his manager.

SweetOne says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Fredo,

They mentioned last night the Red Dog is out with a sore wrist. He took a foul off of his catching wrist on Sunday. He must still be unable to go.

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Thanks, SO. That makes sense. What doesn’t, if that’s the case is not having Morales up. I know, I know.

DrDon says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:55 pm

I see from the Twins page on the Strib, that Randy Johnson is going for #300 tonight. Go Randy and Go Twins.

Jason says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:55 pm

That’s impossible, SweetOne. You can’t have only one available catcher on a roster…if what you say is true, Morales would be wearing a Twins uniform tonight.

netjes says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Finally, a righthander between Morneau and Kubel! I know it’s because of Lee, but, Kubel needs to bat fifth or sixth everyday. Yes, Morneau can use the support, but, so can Cuddyer and Crede. I still support sending Young to Rochester and bringing up Morales to DH, putting Kubel in left.

Kay says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Morales should be up, Buscher down.

Fredo says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Anybody know how many days of Punto-less ball we have left? How many days does Harris have to cement his place? (I might as well be asking when George Washington will run for President again. Greater likelihood of that than there is of Harris cementing the SS job.)

AaronK says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Kubel has been struggling lately mostly because he is getting AB’s against LHP. I would give him the day off personally, but I understand Gardy is limited in his choices at the moment.

So get some hits tonight Kubel.

SweetOne says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Jason,

I’m just telling what Dick & Bert said last night.

They mentioned:

Crede (available to PH, hopefully in Lineup Wednesday).
Cuddy out with finger
Red Dog out with wrist
Mauer in though sore.

Andy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like that Gardy is starting to give Kubel a shot against lefties. Problem is that he might be proving him right for not letting him play against lefties the last few years. Is it me or does he look like his knee is hurt? SO is right on Redmond, they did say he was unavailable last night but I guarantee he could play in a pinch if needed. I like Morales but I’m not an advocate of three catchers. What has happened to the Buscher of last year when he was a serviceable player? Just think where we would be if we had not signed Crede!!

Scott says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Has Gardenhire ever seen Young play left field? He can’t even get the no-brainer decisions correct.

Kay says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Scott, who do you propose play LF tonight? Kubel? And then who’s your DH?

RyanW says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Scott- I think the thought process is that Young is not the defensive athlete that a guy like Span is. He needs to get comfortable in a spot and stay there. Gardy does not appear to think Young has the ability to move from RF to LF and back. So over the long term, Gardy sees him as a LFer, so he just keeps trotting him out there when he is in the lineup. Over the past couple weeks, he has actually made a couple decent plays in LF- he might actually be a worse fielder if he gets moved around a bunch.

OB says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Buscher of last year: .335 BABIP
Buscher of this year: .220 BABIP

andrew says:

twins should go get tom glavine and maybe work him out of the bullpen…. or work him into the rotation. a vet arm would be nice

DrDon says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Kay, Kubel is tremendously slowed with knee problems. It has to be Delmon.

Kay says:

Scott says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Kay and Ryan W,

Uh, you would put Span in left and Young in right. There’s less area to cover in right, Young has played just as much right field in his career as left, and if you look at his career defensive stats, he’s not goood in either position, but he’s far better in right.

Joe the First says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Alright, we’ve got Joe-squared tonight (the two Joes in the starting line up).

USAFChief says:

I still support sending Young to Rochester

and Young is ’still’ out of options.

How many times, in how many ways, and in how many places, does this need to be explained?

DrDon says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:47 pm

Chief…. to some bloggers it’s called….. “DUH”

JC Smith says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Crede 4th. Give me a break….

RyanW says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Scott- I understand that you wouldn’t put Span and Young both in right field. I thought that was assumed. Thanks for pointing that out.

I am just suggesting what I think Gardy’s thought process is. Young will be in LF for the long term, he is a worse fielder when he moves around every time he plays, so when he plays he always plays LF and the rest of the OF is placed around him. This all starts with Gardy penciling in Cuddy as the everyday RFer. We are only talking about situations in which Cuddy is not in the lineup.

wheels says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 5:53 pm

No doubt the Star Trib’s editors need to scour Morneau’s blog post for use of the metric system, misspellings of words like “centre” and “flavour” and repeated off-hand declarations of allegiance to HRM the Queen.

Good luck with that, y’all.

JimCrikket says:

Braves released Glavine today rather than pay him the extra $1 mil he’d get for being added to the 25 man roster. Had a good rehab assignment this week and feels he’s ready to pitch.

If he’s at all effective, that’s a lefty arm that one would think might be interesting to teams with a couple of rotation spots not living up to expectations.

Not that I know of any teams like that, of course.

Walter Johnson says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:04 pm

In fact, this would be my opening day 2010 lineup.

Scott says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:09 pm

RyanW, sorry, Kay had actually asked me who would then play in left if Young went to right, so that answer was really for her.

As far as moving Young around, I don’t think he should ever be in the lineup except for maybe a DH vs. lefties. In cases where it’s absolutely necessary to play him, like tonight, I still think you put in right field because his defense is so bad in left, it could really cost the team.

Terry Felton says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 pm

In fact, this would be my opening day 2010 lineup.

Maybe so. An upgrade at SS I expect. I like Harris but suspect upgrade to LNP if this keeps up.

birdofprey says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:10 pm

“Has Gardenhire ever seen Young play left field?”

Actually, Scott, Gardenhire turns his back whenever Young crosses the line. He’s unsure about where, or even if, Young plays.

DrDon says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Scott, DY has NEVER played RF at the Dome. Hello???????

thrylos98 says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:11 pm

In fact, this would be my opening day 2010 lineup.

How about the remaining of the 2009 season (with Span and Young switching defensive positions? ) ;)

I think that Valencia will be the starting 3B in 2010

JimCrikket says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:14 pm

It certainly won’t be Crede @ 3B in 2010.

Terry Felton says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:15 pm

I think that Valencia will be the starting 3B in 2010

Assuming Crede finishes with projection similar to what he has done so far, and reasonably healthy - gonna be interesting what the TC do in the off-season with him.

howeda says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:16 pm

DH’ing Kubel tonight against a lefty and then having to sit him while you DH Mauer against a righty makes no sense. Not to mention Redmond hits lefties better then righties.

thrylos98 says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm

TF,

there is no way the Twins will (or should) spend $8-10M a season for 4 years for Crede, when they have unfinished business with Mauer to take care and 4-5 players in arbitration next season…

JimCrikket says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pm

TF, I think the Twins and Crede/Boras are using one another this season. The Twins needed a one-year bridge to Valencia and Crede/Boras needed a place where Crede would be almost assured of a starting role at 3B to prove he can stay healthy, still play good D, and hit a few home runs. If he can’t do that, the Twins won’t want him and if he CAN do that, someone else will pay him more than the bargain basement price the Twins got him for.

sy says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:22 pm

SDTwinsFan says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:27 pm

thrylos98 says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 pm

TF,

If he can help the Twins win this year, it is more than eye candy (and if you compare him to the alternative…)

But, Valencia is excellent at the field and his bat has really turned the corner this season, esp. as far as discipline goes (last season in AA he had 18 BB and 70 K; so far this season he has 26 BB and 28 K). I’d argue that if he brings that in the bigs he will be more of a complete hitter than Crede is.

birdofprey says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:29 pm

“In fact, this would be my opening day 2010 lineup.”

My Christmas wish list:

1. An everyday shortstop not named Punto, Harris, or Plouffe.

2. Second half 2009 production from Young, Casilla, Swarzak, and Gomez that have us all pumped for the 2010 season to start. Go ahead, move Young to RF and Span to LF in the new place.

3. Exciting new prospects to watch in the minors, courtesy of brilliant trades by Smith. Good luck elsewhere, Buscher, Harris, Punto, Tolbert, Cuddyer, Liriano, Ayala, Dickey, Redmond, Crede, and Henn.

It’s free to dream…

ishbudesign says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm

i love this lineup.

lets just use cuddyer as trade bait to add depth to the middle infield or bullpen.

also, i think a majority of youngs (and to some extent gomezs) inconsistencies lay with the fact that he hasnt been in the lineup on a regular basis. i would think that it would be hard to get into any sort of positive groove when you spend more time on the bench than in the lineup.

Scott says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:31 pm

DrDon, what’s your point? He can play left in the dome, but not right? He started 156 games in right field for the Rays, presumably about half of that at Tropicana, which is more of a boondoggle than the Dome.

Box!

JimCrikket says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:39 pm

TF and thry, re Crede, yeah I like the guy, too. He’s pretty much performed as I hoped he would and I’ll be happy if he completes the season with productivity close to what he’s had so far. But, yeah I’m anxious to see if Valencia can make the jump next year.

In fact, while I don’t want to project negativity, on the off chance that the Twins look like they’re fading at the trade deadline, I’d probably call Valencia up and deal Crede to a contender.

JimCrikket says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:41 pm

ggg, I’m not sure he’d be a lot better than Livan, but I doubt he’d be worse. They say his velocity is mid-80s (which sounds better than Livan’s low-80s, right?).

I do suspect he’ll land with a NL team, though.

thrylos98 says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:43 pm

At this point, I’d rather have Liriano than Glavine in the rotation. If the Twins want to bring a future hall of famer, Pedro is available.

romer says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:47 pm

“The Twins bullpen has posted a 1.54 ERA over the past 13 games and has held opponents to a .197 batting average.”

1. The first month ERA this year for the Twins was about 5.5. The second month is about 4.0.

2. The offense is about 5th in the AL in this past month too.

3. And a pretty good defensive team too.

It’s time to break out with certain players waking up.

JimCrikket says:

June 3rd, 2009 at 6:51 pm

I’m not so anxious to stick with Liriano over Glavine… or much of anyone else right now.

Kubel has got to start hitting lefties better. If he can’t, trade him. We don’t have room on the roster for a DH who can only hit right-handed pitching.

Now that is something that is actually a good idea. It also might light a fire under Kubel, and get him to address whatever problems he’s having against lefties, and make the adjustments. That would be ideal, because then we could keep him.

Reasons to keep guys:

Young and Gomez - they’re 23. We don’t know how they will develop. I’m more worried about Young because I don’t know if he has a passion to play baseball.

Punto - his batting gets a lot better later in the season.

Buscher, Tolbert, Casilla, Crain - keep but maybe send them back to the minors if they need it.

Cuddyer - He’s going to heal up and be fine again. The only things that keep him from being consistently good are injuries.

Liriano - He’ll be fine. He needs to make a minor mechanical adjustment and needs confidence.

Baker - He’ll be fine. He needs more confidence, and he needs to be more aggressive with batters.

Perkins - He needs to do something different. He is much better than he pitched in his last few outtings before going on the DL.

JimCrikket says:

“sane there seems to be a few people here who don’t know much about baseball.”

I’m not sure it is related to baseball expertise.

The Indians got warned because Cliff Lee went out of his way to taunt another player. Should have been ejected.

Speaking of beanballs…I was playing a demo of one of those baseball games, and intenionally hit about 10 players in a row.

My pitcher was not ejected, and despite the game demanding the umps do something before somebody gets hurt, nobody got hurt, nor were there warnings. The next inning, I intentionally hit each player three times IN A ROW.

NOthing.

The song Nathan comes out to “Stand Up” debuted in “Rock Star” and was performed by a fictional band called Steel Dragon.

My sister insists that the version we’re hearing is sung by Mark Wahlberg (aka Marky Mark) and not the original lead singer (who’s featured on the movie’s soundtrack)

Can somebody with the right connections find out which version of the song they’re playing at the Dome?

Now on that same line, I was at the afternoon Red Sox game last week and “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off ” played when Mike Redmond came to the plate. Dickey’s real ERA now is 2.78. I still remember that passed ball which was charged as a wild pitch when a run scored because of it.

So why can’t the Twins ever swing a trade for a guy like McLouth? How good would he look batting between Span and Mauer? Maybe we didn’t have the right prospects, or maybe we didn’t know he was available, but it sure would be fun to see something like that happen to us for once.

Jake, They swung a trade for Delmon Young. Maybe that trade hasn’t worked out as well as we’d hoped, but you can’t say the Twins don’t make trades.

Also, the Twins don’t need another outfielder.

“On another subject, I posted several times my distaste for knucklers in general, and Dickey in particular.
Dickey has proven reasonably useful for the past month. I stand corrected.”

Way to be a stand-up guy, Chief!
I recall injuring myself trying to sell you on Dickey’s potential value.

I, also, am considering recanting MY past mistakes, but the magnitude of that project is mind boggling.
