Notes from Day 2 of the draft

By La Velle

Thank goodness for blogs so I have an outlet to dish out the information that can’t make the ink version.

Baseball America pointed out that Derek McCallum played hockey in high school and brought that mentality to baseball. That kind of baffled me (is he a grinder or a finesse player?) so I asked McCallum what did that mean.

“Honestly, I’ve never watched myself play,” he said as I laughed. “I’m not sure.”

Deron Johnson, the Twins scouting director, tried to explain.

“Just aggressiveness in the box,” Johnson said. “He takes his hacks but he has plate discipline and uses the whole field.”

I imagine that it also points to some grittiness in the field -but how can middle infielders not have that trait?

I got Johnson on the phone for a few minutes after the draft yesterday while he walked to dinner (I think his goal was to eat half a cow). Here are his takes on some of the players drafted on Day 2.

On sixth rounder Chris Herrmann, who was drafted as a catcher but will play elsewhere: “He’s a hitter, a really good hitter, We took a gamble on him as a conversion guy.”

On 11th rounder Ronnie Richardson, a center fielder who just started switch hitting this year: “He can run and is a really good baseball player. He’s a Chone Figgins type. We really like his athleticism.”

On 14th rounder Matt Tone: “Our area scout identified him. He has  a pretty good fastball and a good slider from the left side. He’ll be a bullpen guy, a two-pitch pitcher.”

On 29th rounder James `Beau’ Wright, a lefty who was better as a junior than senior: “Good arm. Good curveball. He fell in the draft. We like his ceiling and upside. He got hit in the head by a line drive during the area code games.”

On 30th rounder Trayvone Johnson, a catcher: “He came out of high school and went to junior college, then he went to a small school in Texas. He came back and has been working out at Compton. Our scout there saw him. This kid has a well above average arm and is a strong kid. He can really throw. This is a straight-out scout’s pickup.”

Other notes:

  • Several players drafted during Day 2: like 15th rounder Steven Liddle, 19th rounder John Stilson and 23rd rounder Eduardo Encinosa, will be followed through summer league action before the Twins decide to sign them.
  • Encinosa (Miami) and Wright (Cal-Irvine) are among the players who may opt for college instead of signing with the Twins.
  • Johnson said there was some tension in the draft room as they waited for their turn in the fourth round. They were worried another team would take McCallum. “He’s one of the better local players, in our minds, in awhile,” Johnson said.
  • The league has pushed back the deadline to sign drafted players to Aug. 17 - because Aug. 15 falls on a Saturday.
  • McCallum is represented by Joe Speed of Sterling Sports Management.

A couple posters yesterday expressed concern about the pitching-heavy draft. To that I say: Easy!

The Twins have to field two short-season teams, Last year, 40 different pitchers were used at Elizabethton and the Twins’ Gulf Coast League team. There are injuries, promotions, demotions, etc. but you’ve got draft a bunch of pitchers every year.

As far as position players, there are a few guys I can think of off the top of my head - Aaron Hicks, Tyler Ladendorf and Reggie Williams are a few - who are waiting for the short season to begin. Then there are graduates from the Latin American academy who are waiting. Plus players from Europe and Asia who are working out in Fort Myers, too. So there are prospects around.

Here’s another story about first-rounder Kyle Gibson. I hope this year was the last time he’ll hide an injury.

As for today, I’m flying to Chicago to prepare for the Twins-Cubs series. So I won’t be able to post draft updates until this evening. Feel free to track it from where you are at and discuss the picks here. Later…

Re: last thread

Unless things have changed in the last year or two, you are wrong about players signing a pro contract and still having elgibility in another sport.

Dennis Dixon played QB at Oregon, was selected in the 5th round of the MLB draft by the Braves, played in the Braves system with their rookie team, and then returned for his senior year at Oregon.

Again, maybe that rule has changed but I don’t think it has. Dixon played in the Braves system in 2007.

jama,

maybe I am :)

La Velle, is Deron Johnson the same one who used to be a power hitter for the Reds and Phillies in the 60s?

La Velle says:

I read that from thrylos and wondered the same thing. Because teams can sign players out of high school and spread the bounus out over four years while they are in school. Ricky Manning played with the Twins in the summer and football at UCLA in the fall - then he eventually played like crap for my Bears.

Anyway, I just checked with assistant GM Rob Antony. The Twins could sign Decker to a two-sport contract that would allow him to be the second-best receiver in the Big Ten this year behind Arrelious Benn. :)

rpar, that’s a different Deron Johnson….

I would rather see McCallum pay his senior year for the Gophers and help them win the Big Ten than play on a Twins farm team.

La Velle, can you see why Hicks and a 21 year old are still stuck where they are? I cannot find anyone online (like KLaw and others) that thinks this is a good idea.

Shawn,

The 6 hour drive is going to get in the way, otherwise I would love to attend a couple of the games at Wrigley. Next time around I will be there.

LEN You gotta be fried by now, thanks! McCallum is a stud even using wood however Decker is all about football, great athlete but limited arm strength and can’t hit the break. He is well aware where his future is heading, and how to get there, barring injury of coarse. Draft looks very interesting. great coverage!

Hmmm, only one corner infielder after 40 rounds. Does anyone know who is most likely to move to 1st or 3rd. A couple of the catchers or a outfielder maybe? I don’t remember the system being stacked at 1st or 3rd down in rookie or DR leagues.

Just wanted to let all the Twins fans know, MN drafted the Metro Player of the Year, Tartan baseball star Ryan Abramson in the 40th round.

Abramson has a scholarship waiting for him at the U of M, so I doubt he’ll sign with the Twins since his bonus would be really low.

La Velle I disagree with you. This Gibson guy shows lots of character pitching in a game at not 100 percent and injured. He probably by doing that hurt his draft stock and lost money along the way. Plus if he got shelled in the game, he may have ended up out of the first round entirely, Twins probably dont draft him. But, he cared more about his teamates than the money, he was the ace of the staff, team leader and wanted the ball in a pressure situation elimination game, even when injured, those are the types of guys you want on your team, not the Cuddyers of the world who are always looking for excuses not to play, sore pinkie, etc. I played hockey senior year with two dislocated fingers, and hockeys a lot more physical than baseball, Cuddy is a wuss, this Gibson guy is not, he has some courage. If your intent was for the article to paint a negative picture of this guy, then you failed. After reading it, I like the pick even more and have tremendous amount of respect for the guy.

Kent says:

I dont think Decker will sign. He might go as high as the 2nd round in the NFL draft, he doesnt have the speed to go in the first (and we all know its all about speed in the NFL draft, even if you cant catch the ball, Troy Williamson anyone)so his future is defenitely in football. I think he knows this. But who knows maybe I’m wrong, but thats my gut feeling.

Where is this small dark little cave you live in, Kent?

sane says:

June 11th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

bop,

Kent likes Gibson for being a team-first player.

Why is that a bad thing?

Has a twins official commented on why Aaron Hicks is still EST?

Maybe he needs it, I don’t know, but I sure would like to see his career get started.

There is no bigger crapshoot than the MLB draft. A team is just as likely to find an inning-eating stud in round 14 as round 1. It is wise that the Twins focused on pitching prospects and I am thrilled that they drafted 2 guys on day one who can throw over 91 mph. Joe Nathan can’t close forever.

One more win today in Oakland and off to the North Side.

The link was a good read…I kind of laughed a bit at the end of the story, though…Life changing money? Are you talking about the same Twins? How much is Slowey making this year?

how do you like the Cody Martin selection? (that’s the prep guy who hit the ump last year with a pitch when his catcher ducked intentionally)

sane,

“how do you like the Cody Martin selection? (that’s the prep guy who hit the ump last year with a pitch when his catcher ducked intentionally)”

If that kid pitches in Pro ball, he may finish his career having NEVER gotten a called strike from a union umpire.

thrylos98 says:

June 11th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

He is a 3B now :)

sane says:

June 11th, 2009 at 2:51 pm

My bad!

Cody Martin is now a catcher.

There will be no called strikes for his pitchers, and Martin will have a chronically bruised back from the plate umpire’s knees.

sane says:

June 11th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

If he is a 3B now, his umpire problems will be during his at-bats, only.

Good career decision.

thrylos98 says:

June 11th, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Catcher? No… he is a 3B/SS

La Velle says:

June 11th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Kent,

I disagree. It’s one thing to be courageous. It’s another thing to make a bad decision.

In my 15 years of covering ball, there have been numerous cases of players trying to be tough and pitch through injuries, and it’s not the smartest thing. Liriano did it with his elbow in 2006. And, considering that forearm tighness can lead to elbow problems,Gibson was putting too much on the line by starting.

I’m not hating on Gibson. But I’ve seen this happen before. And it’s usually young players who try to play hurt when they shouldn’t.

Flight to Chicago is delayed. (Sigh)

“Kent likes Gibson for being a team-first player.

Team players, like Gibson and Cuddyer, are good. As we can all (except Kent) understand, LaVelle was questioning Gibson’s judgment, not his heart. And Kent was calling a player (Cuddyer) heartless, which puts him in a faraway cave of utter cluelessness. It was his Cudd-chewing that triggered my response.

sane says:

June 11th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

bop,
I guess that I focused on his Gibson take.
I probably minimized his Cuddyer rant, because we see so many Twins bashings here, that I have become non-responsive to them.
