Twins-Astros: Punto leaves game with rib injury

Posted on June 20th, 2009 – 2:53 PM
By La Velle

Twins infielder Nick Punto left tonight’s game because of bruised left ribs. He was replaced by Matt Tolbert.

The only thing I can think of is that Punto dived into first base in the fifth inning. We’ll check on it after the game.

Michael Russo is here and wants me to call it an upper body injury….

Back to regular programming….

This is one of those days when it’s tough to drive downtown for indoor baseball. Warm. Sunny. Everyone is out. The Twin Cities at its best - but we’re in the Dome.

People are tracking how many games would have been delayed by rain this year if we were already outside. How about tracking the kick-butt days when sunblock is needed. I write that fully aware that my sunblock number would be something like 2.5.

Anyway….

Joe Mauer took a ball off the inside of his right knee last night but stayed  in the game. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told Mauer to let him know if he wants a DH day. He said he would consider starting Jose Morales behind the plate if that happened.

Righthanded hitters are batting .424 off Brian Moehler, so we’ll see. Headed down to find the lineup right now.

Update; Joe Crede is not starting today so he can rest some bumps ad bruises. He did take batting practice and is available off the bench. Gardy said Crede was going to get either today or tomorrow off.

Mauer’s knee isn’t a problem, so he’s back in the lineup.

Brian Moehler is making his first start against the Twins since 2002, when he was with the Tigers.

Astros (30-35)

1. Michael Bourn, CF
2, Jeff Keppinger, 3B
3. Miguel Tejada, SS
4. Carlos Lee, DH
5. Lance Berkman, 1B
6. Hunter Pence, RF
7. Ivan Rodriguez, C
8. Darin Erstad, LF
9. Matt Kata, 2B

Pitching: RHP Brian Moehler

Twins (35-34)

1. Brendan Harris, SS
2. Joe Mauer, C
3. Justin Morneau, 1B
4. Jason Kubel, DH
5. Michael Cuddyer, RF
6. Brian Buscher, 3B
7. Delmon Young, LF
8. Carlos Gomez, CF
9. Nick Punto, 2B

Pitching: Scott Baker

La Velle,

Quick question if you don’t mind: In your minor league piece you said something to the effect that the Twins might send Buddy Munroe to Beloit. Has he signed yet? (I am pretty certain that he will because he is a college senior, but has he?) Any signings other than Derek McCallum, Tobias Streich and Trayvon Johnson, you know off yet?

Thanks, and please do not rub the weather in to us poor Northeast folks… it’s been raining on and off for 10 days over here…

You deserve it thry…. So do we after the winter and spring flooding we had. Red River is running over flood stage again after a few days of rain dumping down stream from us.

great day for outside baseball, i wonder how much of our home field advantage will be lost next year? they may have to learn how to win on the road.
good luck with that.
great game last night against a great pitcher and everyone pitched in, nice to see.

romer says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Tigers trying a AA guy, Figaro, pitching on FOX game right now.

romer says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Just now on FOX, you could hear the crack of the bat before picture showed it. Time delay…….

They must not trust Mark Grace’s mouth.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Short moment in time for the satellite?????

romer says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

No gig, mister. Couple parties at a couple bars.

Lotsa wild dancing to a hard rock band in a sand pit last night. Once a year does it for me for that kind of thing.

I’ll email ya something now, Doc.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

got ya, romer. Thanks.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Here is hoping Shake and Bake brings his A-game tonight.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Chicago is sunny, 88 deg. 44% humidity after t-storms the last couple days. The grass has grown half a foot in the past 12 hours.

romer says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Hopin’ that Mauer can muster his “A” game too.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Walter….What kind of grass grows that fast with moisture and heat???? hee hee hee.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

DrDon,

Grass that hasn’t gotten much of either for awhile!

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Has Morales seen any action at all since his call-up?

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

been raining all day here.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Must be moving from west to east.

Milwaukee has an early lead on Detroit.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Not yet, WJ….maybe tonight as Gardy said. If Joe has to DH, Morales will go.

JimCrikket says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

I kind of wondered if that nasty shot off the inside knee that Mauer took last night would mean a DH spot for him tonight. Might not be a bad time to let Morales get some time in behind the plate.

83 and bright blue in Iowa today. May spend Dads Day tomorrow at the local Class A minor league game instead of indoors watching the Twins on the laptop. We shall see.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

I harvested my grass today, with the help of a neighbor kid, but it was Kentucky Blue Grass.

Phxtwins says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

No, Morales hasn’t been used at all this time up. Chad Moehler? Wow, he has stuck around for some reason?

Phxtwins says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Not Chad Moeller, I mean Brain Moehler

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Cloudy and overcast here but that is why they call it June Gloom.. My Son is on his way to Minneapolis as we speak and then off to our cabin for awhile. Unfortunately I can’t be there for awhile myself.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Adam, LEN posts the lineups as soon as he gets them. Patience, please.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

cubs/indians bottom 11 Big Z pinch hitting

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

I’m a little surprised Morales hasn’t at least pinch hit. I thought he was being called up more for his bat than his glove. Maybe just no one else in AAA worthy of a call-up? Since Casilla went down to Rochester, taking away playing time from Tolleson, I thought they might bring up Tolleson for a few games. It’s just until Span comes back and a week or two on the big club could be beneficial.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Jeff in SC,

Where is your cabin?

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Gonna be gone for awhile, time to start the grill for pre-game meal. Be back soon. Doc.

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

Hey Walter,
It is in the Crex Meadow region north of Grantsburgh and south of Danbury. It has been in our family for over 50 years and my Son and I love it there.

earthreclaimers says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Clear skies, endless sun, and temps round 70F up here outside of Fairbanks. I’d love to see a Twinds game live sometime in the next couple years, but will settle for the semi pro midnight sun game between the Alaska Goldpanners and Oregon Black Sox tomorrow night. Presently, I’m eager for listening to Baker bringing his A game on gameday audio.

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

Walter
I should mention that those cities are located in northwest Wisconsin on the border with Minnesota. It is about two hours from MSP.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Jeff, thanks for the extra explanation. I had not heard of those towns before. Is it in the Spooner/Minong area?

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Walter
I think Grantsburgh is about 30 miles from Spooner or so. Our cabin is about a quarter mile from the St. Croix river so Minnesota is right next to us. Danbury is further north on the way to Superior/Duluth. He is going back to attend a football camp that begins this coming week so he is excited.

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Walter
My Son received a letter from Rob Fornasiere the assistant baseball coach for the Gophers so he thought that was cool. I am sure that with the season over they are hitting the recruiting trail hard right now.

No, you are awaiting moderation for BEING AN IDIOT.

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Too bad they are going to rest Crede again as right handed batters are hitting .424 against this guy. It looks like Crede has hit righthanders much better then lefties anyway.

Tom says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Why not rest Crede tommorow then if righties are hitting that well vs Moehler?? I still see us hitting him pretty good so it’s not that big a deal but It’s a legit ?. Although Wandy is a leftiy going tommorow so there you have it.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

sy…..you are correct…..mr. simon little kid has picked to fight with me, i ignore him he is a pest,

sane says:

June 20th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

“Why not rest Crede tommorow”

Maybe, because Baker is a fly-ball pitcher making Buscher less of a risk at 3B tonight.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

The only problem I have with the lineup tonight is Butcher at 3rd, but if Crede can’t go, what’s a manager to do? Leave the base vacant????? DUH!!!!

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

With regard to Crede, I’d rather have him face Wandy instead of Moehler if he must miss a game. And I’d MUCH rather have Buscher face Moehler instead of Wandy.

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

why did slowy leave early last night. i think his pitch count was only about 85 when he left.

He pitched through a rib injury the whole game… that’s why

Scott says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Hey, no worries. We’re going to stomp this Moehler clown. I’m really seeing a Morneau upper deck shot tonight.

Brew Crew is certainly not doing us any favors.

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

And I’d MUCH rather have Buscher face Moehler instead of Wandy.

I’d much rather see Tolbert or Punto at 3B, with the other playing at 2B. Unless Crede is hurt, he should play.

Aaron Hicks is batting 2nd, playing CF for the Snappers tonight, in the first of two, from Beloit-on-the Cheese River.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Yes indeed, t98, lets stick guys with no power at 3B (ISOs of .028 or .062) to protect a pitcher with the lowest GB% amongst the starters.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Crede had a sore back a few days ago. Maybe Gardenhire is trying not to push it, or maybe Crede says it is hurting again. I don’t care if I ever see Tolbert play again this year.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Crede’s contract has tremendous incentives for games played, at bats, etc. Every game he takes himself out of costs him money. So if he is not full power to play, I admire that sacrifice.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

Nice point DrDon. On the other hand, maybe he is just being extra cautious with himself to make sure he can make it through the season and claim all those incentives.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I do not know the details of the incentives in his contract, WJ, but this much I do know….as reported when he signed, number of games was one of them.

Jeff in So Cal says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Detroit is taking it to the Brewers right now unfortunately.
How would you like to be the poor guy that played centerfield for the Snappers when he heard Aaron Hicks was being called up??

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

personnaly, I would take an injured Crede instead of a health Butcher Stump.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

From looking at the gamecast, those HRs look like they’re legit. They didn’t just barely clear the fence, right?

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

OB,
yes they were about 10 rows or so up

gobbledygookguy says:

June 20th, 2009 at 6:52 pm

they were both at least 10 rows up. not cheap.

gatty790 says:

Remember when the Twins couldn’t hit HRs?

Through 70 games last year the Twins had hit 44 HRs.

Through 69.3 games this year the Twins have hit 74.

THIRTY MORE!

Harris is raking

Original Kevin says:

June 20th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

it gets to be when Mauer does not have three hits a game I feel disappointed in him

even going 2 for 5 would make his average go down

Shaun says:

Harris proving he should have started all year.

La Velle says:

The Mayor of Russoville is in the pressbox. Says the Twins have never lost when he’s been in attendance.

Yes, thrylos, Munro has been signed and is headed to Beloit. Twins also have agreed to terms with 7th round pick righthander Brad Stillings.

Ben Hendrickson has been released from Rochester.

The bus to E-Town leaves tonight at midnight….

Original Kevin says:

DrD,

don’t remember that… but I know that Baker is gonna have a sizable bruise on his butt tomorrow

thrylos98 says:

That Baker play gives the words “half ass fielding” a different meaning.

Original Kevin says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Mauer is on kind of a HR drought relative to the tear he was on, what caused his HR tear, and why is he not jacking now?

DrDon says:

totally new and original, thry. the buttocks is a great assist.

DrDon says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Yeah, OK, that HR rate was unsustainable. In the future, a bunch of those jacks are gonna be doubles.

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Cuddyer was inept at that play… let the ball pass by him

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

That was all on Butcher. That’s why he should not be on the field. Bert and Ernie should shut up about Gomez

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:33 pm

Was there an error on a foul pop or something? I’m confused t98.

Terry Felton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Thrylos, have you ever actually played baseball?

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:36 pm

OB,

Gomez caught a fly and threw it to Butcher (instead of the cut off man). Butcher let it hit a foot in front of him and bounce over. Baker was covering; no harm. Dick and Bert got all over Gomez for throwing to third instead of hitting Harris. That was a very good throw that Butcher butchered… that little part went over Bert and Ernie’s head

thrylos98 says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Yes I have (still play in a rec league for that matter)

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:38 pm

it wasn’t a foot in front of him but it was a very catchable ball for Buscher…. good job on Bake backing it up

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Well, t98, I think every aspect of that play (from CF to 3B to Dick and Bert) exemplifies the true shortcomings of those involved.

DrDon says:

I know you are brilliant and some of the rest of are idiots, YET no matter HOW MUCH you despise Buscher, your comment on that play shows your knowledge is sorely lacking as well.

IF Cuddyer had made the same play to Crede, WE ALL know you would not have the integrity to repeat this same comment. The fault would be Cuddyers.

Nora says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Unbelievable. We had a 2 run lead coming into this inning. There was no reason to go to Henn here. Another game possibly lost because of a bad decision.

Shaun says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Nora says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Why we have Henn in the majors and Swarzak in the minors is hard to comprehend.

Shaun says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

I agree Nora.

Liriano to the pen, Swarzak back up as a starter.

fcmlefty says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Seems like another win was just handed to the opponant a 1 run lead handed to Henn? Frustrating. What is Gardy thinking?

tbob says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Bill Smith is doing a great job! Calling up Henn, sending Swarzak down, leaving Slama down, signing Ayala. This guy is great at evaluating pitchers and making shrewd moves. I think we need to give him a raise. Great job Billy!!!!!
I hear he is crowing about his next move to solidify the pen by bringing Jesse Crain back up. Good job Billy.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

You can make all kind of analyses and number crunching and Sabremetrics you want. Do your babips, ops+, fzzies, minus frbiprazrs. It don’t matter. In the world of management theory and not numbers the replacement for Ryan has been a failure. His inability/unwillingness to adjust his team to the loss of Neshek a year ago has cost the team one entry in the playoffs last year and, likely, another this year

He is a failure to date. No matter how you spin it.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Why we have Henn in the majors and Swarzak in the minors is hard to comprehend.

It’s repreHENNsible.

thrylos98 says:

Alright,

Henn sucks. Doesn’t the one who made the decision to have him in that situation suck?

fcmlefty says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

T98:

I gotta question for your superior analytical skills. How does Liriano from the wind up compare to Liriano from the stretch. Because I think this team will be better if he can pitch from the bullpen, but statistically, can he be a candidate for the job?

Original Kevin says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

each team should play the DH rule the way they normally play it. So it would not be based on whose stadium they are in, it would be based on what your team usually does. So in interleague play, the AL team would have a DH and the NL team wouldnt

renotwo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Gardy can be a flaming idiot at times. With all the guys rested in the bullpen he brings in Henn? Why? Henn hasn’t done anything in a month except give up runs. What a stupid decision! He has lost more games with his gut feeling than I care to count. Just like with Crain. As soon as I saw Henn warming up I knew we were in trouble. What is he saving Dickey for? Breakfast? Total idiot at times.

Nora says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Time for another HR for the Twins.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Make sure in any opinion about Liriano’s ability to work out of the pen that there is an analysis for how long it takes him to get ready to enter the game. He may not be able to work an inning if he doesn’t have 15 minutes/starter time to get ready.

toby says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Punto hurt on head-first slide… Henn used in a high leverage situation… WHY are things that are beyond obvious to every thinking SABR-oriented observer totally arcane to the millionaires playing for/running the team.

Nora says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Gardy has a knack for bringing the worst possible reliever in any situation. 5 run lead? Bring in Guerrier. 1 run lead Crain and now that he is in the minor, Henn.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Punto with bruised left ribs. He may figure out, at age 31 or 32, that the slide is a dumb strategy into first base.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

But Gardenhire makes the most out of what he is given to work with.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Now we get Tweedeldee to put down the Stros top hitters. This should be good.

toby says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

fcmlefty: Liriano’s been significantly worse with men on this year (the league as a whole is always a big worse). For his career, the difference is more like a normal bases empty/men on split.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Fredo,

Who is Tweedledum?

thrylos98 says:

He has marginally decent control. xFIP last below 4.00 in — you guessed it — 2004. He’s shot. He’s done. He WILL cost the Twins wins if he continues to be used in meaningful situations.

June 20th, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Bullpen Rx:

Henn out (sent to Triple A)
Ayala out (released ala Lamb)

Left: Nathan
Guerrier
Mijares
Dickey

To get to 7 (where it should be IMO):

Trade for a proven 8th inning guy
(you get to choose…Hawkins or
better)

Bring up Swarzak and move him or
Liriano to pen

Bring up Keppel or Delaney

New Pen:

Nathan
Guerrier
Liriano/Swarzak
Delaney/Keppel
Dickey
Mijares
New guy (I’ll still take Hawkins, but
can live with any other
option as long as he is exper
ienced.)

Walter Johnson says:

T98..forgot about Morillo…he could be in the Delaney/Keppel spot.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Not because Crede is so much better, Fredo, but because Buscher versus lefties is brutal.

Fredo says:

OB,

True. As we saw.

tony says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

what lefty did Buscher face? or are we talking in general?

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm

I’d be ok with that as long as they made the other, or similar moves. They are going to have to go outside to get an experienced 8th inning guy…which they’ve lacked since Neshek went down a…..year ago.

toby says:

Slama’s still striking out 34.4% of batters faced, which is actually DOWN from last year. While his control has been subpar, his BABIP looks very unlucky (especially considering his stuff is nasty enough that he’s striking out that many dudes). Morillo’s never posted numbers like Slama has, even though his K% at AAA right now is his best at any level ever.

What difference does it make? They aren’t able to meet the demands made on them by the manager as put in place by the GM. I don’t blame them for being who they are. I blame the GM for having them as core, with-a-lead relievers. They both don’t belong in the roles they have been put into on this team.

This bullpen was deficient last year, was deficient over the offseason and are deficient now. Stat away to your heart’s delight but this bullpen isn’t capable, from my non-stat eye, of putting this team in a position to win a division or do anything if they luck into it.

On the off chance that Punto has, once again, taken himself out of the lineup for a period (about as predictable as the swallows/Capistrano and the buzzards/Hinckley, OH) are we wedded to Tolbert again?

Do they dare bring up Tolleson? It doesn’t sound like Gardy was singing Casilla’s praises in the paper. In fact I’d expect Casilla to be part of any trade to get a reliever.

So is it Tolbert tomorrow and beyond if Punto slid himself onto the DL again?

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Henn had a 1.13 ERA in 24 innings of relief at Rochester. That’s why he’s up here.

How about bringing up Gambino (3-1, 2.81 ERA, 1.01 WHIP?

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

WJ,

“Toto I don’t think we’re in Kansas (Rochester) anymore”

It’s kind of why I’d like at least one reliever (Hawkins or an equivalent) that has actually pitched in an eighth inning situation before. I know Hawk gave up the dong, but I’ll listen to anyone who has another experienced nutcutting time performer to recommend. It’s ok to bring up Delaney, Morillo, etc. to try (they may end up like Henn/Ayala) but we really need a “second closer”

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

OB,

No doubt about that. Just saying that they needed to bring someone up from AAA, and Henn was the best choice at the time.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

WJ: not enough Ks to make up for the BBs. Morillo’s got the goods and he’s starting to get the control.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Fredo,

Mijares is supposed to be our “second closer” but Gardenhire is afraid to use him for some reason.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Mijares has been shaky the last month. Not an experienced second closer. He’s fine for the seventh inning.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

If Morillo isn’t quite ready, they’ll never get him through waivers a second time if they have to send him back down. I’d like him to continue in Rochester for awhile.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Simply put, the Twins are an arm short. Is Morillo the answer, probably not. The Twins are too close to being championship viable to not improve the pen via trade.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

From a different perspective: why not use Nathan in the 8th? Doesn’t a team want their best pitcher to face the oppositions best hitters? It may have been 5-5 otherwise.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

OB,

Exactly. I know that Hawk has been the visible name since Charley Walters mentioned him. I’m sure there are other, more likely better options. The point is that this need was extant exactly at this time last year and BS did not address it.

We actually have a lot of choices for arms, even power ones, if we want to add to the talent of the 5th/6th bullpen arm. It’s the number 2 that never got addressed and still needs to be addressed. Some may hope that Liriano is that guy…I don’t think he is but in the absence of a good, bold move…..

OB says:

Not many brain trusts could have delivered this defeat. After how Slowey humiliated Hunter Pence with inside pitches last night, why throw the dancing dandy sliders on the outer half. Bremer noted that no Twins’ reliever had pitched back to back games in over a week and,yet it appeared, Mijares/Guerrier were not available tonight vs the two NL castoffs, Henn/Ayala. Lastly, for the secong time this week, the Twins took a look at who they were facing (Ian Snell/Moeller) and mailed in the game. Poor preparation from a Twins team that is barely average.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

I don’t get why a closer can’t be used in the most crucial moment of the game and go more than 3 or 4 outs now and then. Well, except that 2004 alds game i was at were gardy tried to get 3 innings out of nathan. Use nathan to preserve a lead, then if runs are scored, put in a lesser guy.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Correction Dan66: barely ABOVE average. This team is good enough to sacrifice some of the future to try and win this year. Right now, they’re one or two pieces short.

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Do not lay this loss on the bullpen. Lay it on Gardy IMO.
Here are the options.
3-2 lead in the 7th with 1 out and a guy on do you.
a. Bring in your worst reliever in a tight game. b. Leave Baker in.
c. bring in a guy who has about a 1.4 ERA for the last 2 months who can probably finish off the game.
This isn’t hindsight. It’s percentages. I would not be saying a thing if Dickey had come in and gave up runs. How can you complain about not having a deep enough bullpen when you have a guy who can give you tons of innings and outings that you throw 4 times in 22 days?
Nothing against Henn but it is the same deal with Crain. Let the guy struggling most get innings in non pressure situations so they can get confidence and prove they can throw zeros up there.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

OB,

I really agree. I think they’re so very close to running away with the division and having a chance to be a factor in the playoffs. Some of those pieces may come from within but one or two may have to come from without. I don’t know if that’ll happen though.

Part of it is to get the best lineup to stay healthy and in the lineup. Part of it is to go out and get what you need. Color me a skeptic on the latter.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

I actually see this as a quite good team, missing a couple of pieces. Every team has weak links, good managers don’t expose those weak links in high leverage situations.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Des,

In the micro view I agree. You can only go with what you have as a manager and, as you point out, Dickey (given his performance to date) has been underutilized. It is a legitimate question to ask as to if he is capable of being a more meaningful contributor given this bullpen’s makeup.

On a macro level, though, Gardy has what he has. That’s on Smith, IMO. And that is where the failure of last year (or the one game short, if you prefer) rests. It’s been a year. And it hasn’t been addressed. We don’t have many years with the current talent at their peak.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Des, Sib, exactly. While I understand that hindsight is 20/20, the percentages clearly indicate that Gardy handled his bullpen very poorly. Strategy is only part of what makes a good manager, and Gardy brings some good traits to the table, but the blood is on his hands for this one (is that enough hyperbole?).

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Any tied game after 8, why isn’t Dickey on the mound for the 9th? Prepare for extra innings to save the rest of the pen. Isn’t this supposed to be the advantage of having a knuckler in the pen?

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I see this as a .500 team, and only that because of their usual yearly dominance of weaker NL teams. Three games out of 1st only because they are in the weakest division in the AL. To me, that is more than one or two pieces from contending, let alone running away with it.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

It’s really cool to say in an interview “I like him and his knuckler because he can pitch many days in a row and eat up innings”

Using him like you describe him? Not so much. He was extremely available last Sunday in Chicago.

Lip service.

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

While I agree that it would be nice if the pen was deeper the current makeup of the pen has been quite good. Why hold them responsible for Crain, Breslow, etc underperforming? Nathan, Mijares, Dickey and Guerrier have 4 of the top ERA’s on the team and have won many games for us and have given away very few. Even Ayala has been better than the free agent everyone wanted in Cruz and better than Reardon’s ERA in 87. It is just like Crain decision. Why give your worst pen guy the ball when the game is on the line and there are much better options? Getting Swarzak up here would probably give us an excellent pen. Dickey probably isn’t a 1.4 ERA pitcher but Mauer isn’t a .425 hitter either. You ride em while they are hot

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

WJ, I’d agree if the regular season determined the champion. The playoffs are a much smaller sample size (I.e. if the Twins get hot they can be WS champs). The weakness of the AL central is our saving grace. Thank God we ain’t the 2009 TB Rays.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Ayala is not garbage. Point. Blank. Period. He and Guerrier are the same pitcher. Luck has dictated they’re different results.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:19 pm

Ayala is not good…. should be in low leverage spots, he is not aweful, just not good.

Fredo says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Des,

when you cite ERA’s for the bullpen you might want to see how many inherited runners they give up. I could be wrong but I think some of the ERA numbers of the starters reflect the allowed runners to score. I don’t look at the ERA’s as being defining. T98 and OB could probably speak to the general effectiveness of Ayala, Crain, Henn, et. al. in terms better than ERA. Just using the eyeball test Mijares has been good and bad (mediocre?) for a bit.

If you want to measure the bullpen as yourself this question. It’s 2-1 Twins going into the eighth and the starter has to come out. Nathan won’t pitch because he isn’t used that way. Which of the current pen would you bet your house on to get you to Nathan? Same question for the 7th inning. Guerrier has shown himself to be reliable as long as he’s not pitching on his third day in a row. Who else?

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

WJ?
Records of the West are maybe a couple games better than the Central at the moment. I think the arguement could be made that the Central is the 2nd or 3rd best division in baseball. IMO the Tigers, Sox, Twins, and even the Indians are pretty good. Getting beat by the best division in baseball and by each other is what keeps the records low.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

I agree SIB, That 7th shoulda been Ayala’s (recall the Astros hitters for the inning). Bullpen management, thus far, has been egregious.

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:29 pm

I agree about the inherited runners thing but have a hard time quantifying it. It works the other way also. There are certainly times Guerrier, Mijares and Nathan have come in and stranded runners the starters would have allowed in. I wouldn’t bet my house on anyone including Nathan but certainly not on Cruz who was the popular choice on these blogs in the free agent market, or Hawkins who is the current favorite. Pitchers give up runs and leads for all teams. What 7th and 8th inning guys in the whole major leagues would you bet the house on?
I am really not disagreeing with you cuz I would like to be a bit deeper but the pen that exists hasn’t been bad, just badly used occassionally, IMO.

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Also, I can understand not bringing him up for relief duty, but Swarzak would seem to be a pretty good fix for 7th or 8th innings. Make that 7th and 8th. Not sure why a guy can’t throw both and save the rest of the pen.

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

On the Punto incident… I think he might have bruised the ribs on the head first slide with the squeeze bunt (I think he dove there) because his hand is the only thing that touches the base, he might have nicked his side on the slide tonight but I dont think he hurt himself tonight…. which could have been a potentially stupid move with it possibly affecting his ABs as well.

Des says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Sorry though, in answer to your question I would still go with the guy that has given up 2 runs in his last 26 innings. (Dickey) He has earned it.

OB says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Des, the pen has been OK in some regards. I really like how you bring up the inherited runners point. This is why Ks are so important when talking about relief pitchers. Runner on 3rd and less then 2 outs: need a strikeout. This is why, if after 7 innings, Pujols were to come up one would want Nathan. That’s how a manager gives the team the best position to win.

Walter Johnson says:

June 20th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

OB says:

Similarities?
Hard to see any.

OB says:

June 21st, 2009 at 12:04 am

Similarities sy (Ayala, Guerrier): FIP (4.03, 4.11) and similar GB/FB/LD percents (regardless of what they’re throwing, it gets the same results). The differneces: Guerrier is striking out more people this year and he’s been luckier (BABIP = .195!). Those Ks matter, though, and Guerrier is a tick above Ayala, but just a tick.

OB says:

June 21st, 2009 at 12:13 am

thrylos98 says:

June 21st, 2009 at 12:19 am

OB,

I do get your point about BABIP; but check this out:

The last week (and this game’s numbers are not included), Guerrier had a .333 BABIP and a .500 opponent OPS, while Ayala had a .222 BABIP and a .606 opponent OPS.

I am not saying that Ayala is “bad”. Based on what the Twins have in the organization currently, he is one of the top 5 relievers (Henn is a different story, btw.) Ayala is very serviceable and he can be a decent middle reliever.

Henn lost today’s game (and the manager of the millennium who chose to put him at that spot.) I hope that someone sees the light and sends him away (if he does not accept that assignment to the minors let it be)

If someone told you that the Twins will hit 4 home runs in a game and Harris and Young would be 2 of the people who hit them and the starter got only one run against him after 6, would you think that that would have been a win?

It is (almost) that simple…

Think about why the Twins did not win this game.

Eddie Shore says:

June 21st, 2009 at 12:48 am

Henn lost the game… yes, Gardenhire put him on the mound and you can certainly question his thought process there… but Henn blew it, plain and simple.

I didn’t want to see Henn in there either and I’m wondering what Gardenhire’s reasoning was…maybe it was similar to Crain’s situation where they wanted to run him out there one more time to see if he could take care of business…and since he couldn’t–time for a change.

AJ Pesh says:

June 21st, 2009 at 1:04 am

Pin the loss on Gardy. He makes poor decisions. Henn in a close game? Yuck.

Harris is a machine, and he never would have been given a chance to play unless Punto got hurt and put on the DL. He would still be a “role player”, as Gardy so described him even though he was one of the Twins hottest hitters, while Casilla and Punto sucked it up, with Tolbert being called up. Anyways, whatever. Same old story every year. Wrong starting 9 guys for 2 months. The guys that should be starting get a chance in June. Twins play better. Gardy is a genious for the turn-around. Unless, of course, he goes with Henn as the man in a 1-run game.

Joe Mauer is a machine. Go Twins.

thrylos98 says:

June 21st, 2009 at 1:14 am

I’m wondering what Gardenhire’s reasoning was

how about this (because I am sure that nobody questioned him after the game) :

“Bakey battled his tail off, and he had given only one run, but Andy’s clicker clicked and when that happens I have to go to the pen otherwise the sky or the Metrodome roof, is going to fall upon us. I looked at who was up from the other team and there were a bunch of lefties and Josey battled his tail off yesterday and he looked hungry to me and he was half way to the clubhouse to taste the post game buffet and I thought I better get Henny up there. He laid a few eggs before and I had a gut feeling that he will do it now. My back even feels better now so I can scoot my rear end to make pitching changes instead of delegating that to Andy and that is no good because every time Andy gets there, that clicker of his gets moving. Bad technology and all”

Eddie Shore says:

June 21st, 2009 at 1:34 am

T98- Your disdain for Gardenhire has been noted.

Just curious. Based on your little narrative there, are you insinuating that you would have left Baker in after he had given up his second run, with his history of “big inning”, notably when he’s tires?

Walter Johnson says:

I think there are some times when it is ok to use Henn in that situation - like when the Twins are comfortably in first place by 5 or 6 games. Then you can take a chance and see if Henn can come through and maybe learn something. I know it is a long season and there is alot of ball still to be played, but the Twins are fighting to stay above .500. It’s got to be a big let down for everyone when your manager doesn’t manage the whole 9 innings. And letting Buscher bat in the 9th then having Crede pinch hit for TOLBERT, when Punto was already out of the game? What if the Twins had tied and had to go extra innings?

Walter Johnson says:

Buscher has a better chance of generating a power hit than Tolbert, and when it comes down to it…worry about that AFTER you get the tying run across.

Mauer Power says:

June 21st, 2009 at 10:54 am

The Astros have a lefty starting pitcher, Wandy Rodriguez, going today. Kubel needs to sit. Kubel is hitting .203 against LHP. That’s terrible, just atrocious. Bench Kubel today.

The line-up I’d like to see:

1. Harris SS
2. Mauer DH
3. Morales C
4. Morneau 1B
5. Cuddyer RF
6. Crede 3B
7. Young LF
8. Gomez CF
9. Tolbert 2B

Morales has a team-leading .455 average against lefties.

Ideally we should have a guy hitting between Mauer and Morneau. That way if Mauer homers, there’s still a good chance that Morneau bats with a runner on base. Let’s give Morales an opportunity to bat between the two sluggers.

Bench Punto for continuing to dive to first base on close plays. He injured himself last night doing that. He never gets on base by diving into first. It never works. Bench him for the day to send that message.

FranTheMan says:

Twins were playing for the two-run walkoff from Crede.

Tie game and the emergency 2B comes in. Probably Cuddyer, who was a ’super-utility’ experiment in a former life, with Pridie in the OF.

Mauer Power says:

June 21st, 2009 at 11:03 am

On the bullpen, we should rank them like this, based on ERA.

1. Nathan
2. Mijares
3. Dickey
4. Guerrier
5. Ayala
6. Henn

It’s time to move Dickey up to a more prominent role in the bullpen. He should often be used as the 8th inning set-up man.

Ayala, Henn, and whoever is added are the long-relief options for games with lopsided margins. They are not tight situation pitchers.

Gardenhire has to stop using more than two relievers in a game. After the starting pitcher goes 6 or 7, the setup guy should work through the end of the 8th. Then use Nathan or another guy as appropriate.

We should have re-signed Dennys Reyes.

Yeah, MP, I never understood why they didn’t bring back Reyes. Solid arm.

I say the Twins will be 3-6 on this weeks road trip. Or with a real good showing maybe 4-5. What do you say 98; you are a #’s guy?

You must be insane.
Punto is no higher than 4 or 5.

The AL Central is the only division in baseball with only one team above .500. The AL East and AL West each have just one team BELOW .500. The Washington Nationals are the only MLB team with a lower win % than the Royals and Indians. By far the weakest division in baseball, against which the Twins are 11-9.

Not sure if anyone had mentioned this yet.

But CF and top Twins prospect Aaron Hicks has finally made his debut for the Beloit Snappers. Currently 3-8 with a 2B and an RBI in 3 games.

Time to start planning my road trip to Sconnie country…
