Twins-White Sox: Perkins returns

Posted on July 11th, 2009 – 4:46 PM
By La Velle

Glen Perkins finally get the ball today after missing three days due to illness.

“He’s pitching, and I don’t give a crap what he’s feeling,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Then Gardenhire laughed and said, “He’s fine.”

Perkins is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in five games (two starts) against the White Sox. His history against White Sox hitters isn’t that deep. Paul Konerko is 2-for-9 against him and Jermaine Dye is 1 for 8. No one else with the Sox has more than six at-bats against Perkins.

Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel are both 6-for-19 against Gavin Floyd. Kubel has homered off of him twice. Brendan Harris is 1 for 13 against Floyd but is starting in the No. 2 hole.

We may win, we may lose, but one thing is certain: Gardenhire’s inability to slide both Mauer and Morneau one spot in the lineup will once again cost this team a chance at an additional run or two.

Adam says:

*one spot up

stinky says:

perk will throw a no hitter! for an inning or two, ha!

lets win this one and secure a .500 first half!

haff620 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

i agree with adam, mauer should bat two. morneau three and cuddyer 4. Cuddyer is 2nd on team in extra base hits, and as much as I hate to admit it, (b/c I dont really like him) he should be batting 4th. Then I would go Kubel 5, Crede 6, Harris 7, Gomez 8 and punto 9

Ben says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

should be the 4 lefties in a row to start.

JP says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Adam

What you’re suggesting makes much too much sense. Gardy is too stubborn and has too much ego to adjust.

gobbledygookguy says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:19 pm

sure like to see gardy pick either dy or gomez and stick with them for 5-6 games. every time one of them gets going a little they are back on the bench again.
one more win tonight or sunday and all the trade will end. imo it’s all talk anyway, about 1% chance of it happening.

Shaun says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Dunno about that, JP. He says that’s where he’s batting “and I don’t give a crap what he’s feeling.”

amtrekman says:

Anybody else getting an error when trying to read “Aggressive with fastball, Guerra moves up”? It was happening at noon today and still is for me here.

amtrekman, I’m getting the same error.

Huh?

Scott says:

July 11th, 2009 at 5:55 pm

Adam, didn’t you know it’s a requirement to bat a struggling middle infielder in the 2-spot?

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Come on perk…

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Looks like perkins is normal average self. I am not really sure why people are so high on him.

coco says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Perkins looks out of gas in the 2nd inning. It’s like he’s been sick or something!

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

If hes not healthy he should not be on the mound.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Twins look like they are going to get about maybe four hits tonight.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Nice swing you bum!!!!!!!!!

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Cuddyer swinging at the junk ball for strike three.

I should just make save that somewhere so I can cut/paste it on a daily basis.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

What’s even worse is Cuddy swung at the same pitch on the 1-1 count right before that.

Did that 1-2 pitch come as something of a surprise, Mike?

cc in stcloud says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Im not as much of a Cuddyer hater as most people here, but he is the most riddiculous hitter with two strikes, slider away, slider away, slider away…

Greg says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

You don”t move a guy like Morneau out of the 4 spot.

Mauer is the perfect #3 batter.

Until we get anothe 2nd..

harris will work…

Win Twins!

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Apparently this years motto is; “take the pressure off going for the sweep by splitting the first two games”.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Wow! Simply pathetic so far.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Nice play Cuddy!

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

No need to dive Cuddy, but feel free to lean over to catch that ball. Oh wait, he’d be on the disabled list before he hit the ground.

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:14 pm

That might be a good thing Macleoud

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Brian Anderson really?

fcmlefty says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

That ground ball is why Harris isn’t a starting-caliber SS

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

People yelled at me when I said to trade Cuddyer during his brief hot streak. Now, the flailing Cuddy is back.

whattodo says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:17 pm

I have turned on the game to see Cuddyer swing at a ridiculous pitch for strike three and then fail to call Punto off on a fly ball that should have been his. Wake up!!!!!!!!

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Until we get anothe 2nd..

harris will work…

Coming into today, Harris has 139 PAs batting second.

In those 139 PAs, he’s ‘hit’ .215/.237/.277

That doesn’t ‘work’ for me Greg.

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Looks like Cuddy is getting in a day of rest without actually leaving the lineup.

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

RALLY!!!

coco says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Good pitching will beat good hitting every time. They have a VERY good pitcher going tonight & we are sending out only 5 or 6 good hitters. Please trade for another good hitter! We need to add depth to the lineup.

Macleod says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

The Twins are competing in the division, ticket sales are high. What incentive do the Pohlads have to trade for somebody? The ‘return on investment’ will not be high enough for the Pohlads to pull the trigger on that business decision.

Tinker Field says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

hey, Did Bert play in the majors? How would we know beside the fact he has already mentioned it 23 times. Unlistenable!!!

Punto and Blyleven for pirates single A first baseman and ball bag

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Gardenhire is dolt, I can’t stand this any more.

You leave Perkins in to face Konerko, and then bring in Dickey to face a LH batter.

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Perkins should not have even started if he is not well. Way to Gardy tax the bullpen, and another game of pissing down your leg. I hope they blow it WIDE open. Maybe a message can get sent then!

coco says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Time to do some channel surfing, I’m getting too frustrated…… see ya’.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

The inexorable gravity of .500 just seems to be too strong for this team to break.

mickey mental says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

a break in the clouds? or an illusion?

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Leaving Perkins in to face Konerko looms pretty large now.

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Punto sucks, Willie Mays Hays, give me 10 pushups you bum

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Way to give Gomez a chance to steal, Punto.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Crede’s the man. Thank you Cuddy for striking out and not hitting into the dp.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

What is Dickey doing here?

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

What is Dickey doing here?

Knuckleballing.

I warned you about this all year.

You take the good with the bad with a knuckleballer.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Have the Twins conceded? Time for a new pitcher.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

All around these Twins suckkkkkkkkkkkkk.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Ok now I now the Twins have conceded.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Thanks, R.A.

minntwins5 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Yea time for a new pitcher but not duensing vs thome. god dangit thats the game i think

mickey mental says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

“You take the good with the bad with a knuckleballer.”

i know what you’re saying, but you take the good with the bad with any pitcher. and there’s been WAY more good than bad with dickey.

Nora says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Sadly though lately Dickey has not been very good. Hopely he gets back on track soon. Thome the Twins killer. Was Duensing really the best option there?

Blake says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Dickey didn’t get one close pitch. The ump handed the Sox those runs.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

i know what you’re saying, but you take the good with the bad with any pitcher. and there’s been WAY more good than bad with dickey.

He was useful when he was being used in a mopup role, and was pitching way over his head.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Duensing did his job. He got a broken bat blooper.

Nora says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Gardy manages to put the worst possiblke option in the bullpen at critical times in the game. Another loss probably, Gardy partly to blame.

Nora says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Doing his job would be getting out of the inning without 3 runs scoring.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

At least Detroit is losing. Spoken like a true Twins fan.

stinky says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

I was sitting here telling myself Keppel was gonna come in with the bases loaded. How wrong I was

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Doing his job would be getting out of the inning without 3 runs scoring.

Three runs that belong to R.A. Dickey, Nora.

Seriously, do you not understand baseball at all? He broke Thome’s bat. It was a lazy fly ball, that just happened to fall in a bad place, and was made worse by some terrible outfield defense.

mickey mental says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

gotta agree with you there, chief.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

While I’m on a rant….how about you put the blame where it belongs?

If Bill Smith would provide his manager with a freakin’ bullpen, you wouldn’t have to bring R A Dickey into a 2 run game, and you’d have a lefty that could come in and put Thome away.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:39 pm

I blame Perkins. 4 1/2 innings is not going to get it done.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Put it on the boaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrddd. YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSsssss. Suck it Hawk!!! Go Crede.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

A.J you’re a douche.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Do we have to give up runs every inning?

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Nice play Morneau.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Hawk, you’re the biggest homer out there.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 8:55 pm

“Stretch, stretch, stretch” that’s what Hawk’s wife said.

gatty790 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

I’d trade Punto for Sanchez.

kingartie says:

July 11th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Once again, where were Mauer and Morneau when needed them? Way to kill the rally.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I’d trade Punto for 8 million dollars.

USAFChief says:

July 11th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I’d trade Punto for 8.5 million dollars.

I can’t wait for another great “Twins Instructional”. It is definitely some of the finest entertainment on television and a must see for all baseball fans. Seriously, how can anyone justify spending 15 minutes of air time putting that crap on. If they can’t fill their postgame show with 30 minutes of something worthwhile, they should just cut it to 15 minutes. Those ‘instructional’ are just brutal.

denise gebeke says:

July 11th, 2009 at 9:53 pm

that one pitch right before they pulled dickey should of been a strike damn crooked umps!!

Daniel1966 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Some observations from the Southwest: Perkins pitched with enough fire to make Baker look macho (time will tell); Gardy and his pitchers get little respect, even at home, from umpires (perhaps due to their respective lack of a reputation); R.A. Dickey showed more emotion in this game than anyone; A.J. works the strike zone (as the catcher)and the home plate ump as well as anyone; Joe Mauer’s swing has disappeared prior to and not after the All-Star H.R. Derby; and lastly, congrats to Brad Radke for being installed into the Twins HOF but your extended, slow-paced remarks seem to have left your former teammates with the same slow start for which you were so famous (just joking). And, oh yeah, Gardy’s vaunted NY Yankees gave up 14 runs to an LA Angels team playing without both Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero. Amazing!

stinky says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

this team showed some fight! win the series tomorrow!

Nora says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:14 pm

I doubt Mauer swing will ‘disappear’ for long.

Shaun says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Right, stink. One thought from the Great North:

DON’T GIVE THOME ANYTHING TO HIT!
EVER!

Daniel1966 says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Ms. Nora, What a brave remark regarding Joe Mauer’s swing…I guess the humor didn’t translate. And Mr. stinky, let us hope the Twin’s win manana, take the series 2-1, finish the home stand with a 4-5 record and enter the All-Star break one game over .500. What a truly successful year we are, indeed, experiencing!

Jay says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

A brutal ten game roadtrip to Texas, Oakland and Anaheim right after the All Star Break. If their starting pitching doesn’t shape up, the Twins might be sellers rather than buyers by the trade deadline.

Mauer Power says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

We need more offense. Start Morales at 2nd base. Have him bat 2nd.

Mauer Power says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Make Thome a Twin next year. He can DH and Kubel can take left.

Shaun says:

July 11th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Thome has been available a few times over the years. He says he would hate to play in Minnesota. Can’t say as I blame him, his stats would take a dive not having Twins pitching to hit.

Win or lose on sunday, this homestand is a colossal failure. They finally show some life on a good road trip(where admittedly they shoulda won 1 or 2 more) then come home and pee down their collective legs. The Yankee series was an embarassment, as the depleted Angels have proven the last 2 days. Now with Twin killer Buerhle on the mound tomorrow this is a 3-6 homestand against your likely 1st round opponent should you win the central, and the 2 teams you need to beat out in order TO win the central. This team flat out does not have it this year. They never did. They never will. For the next 3 months they are going to do just enough not to fall completely out of the race, and they will fail to do enough to take this soft division by the throat. I think we all know this deep down, much as we hope by some miracle they start playing to their ability.

stinky says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:21 am

ever since morneau ‘tweaked’ his groin, it seems he’s been struggling at the plate.

might be more to it. especially in light of his turning down multiple invites to the HR derby.

lets hope he heals over the break, cuz i get a feeling he’s been ‘toughing it out’.

maybe i’m just a wingnut :)
