Twins expected to recall Alexi Casilla

Posted on July 12th, 2009 – 10:14 AM
By La Velle

Alexi Casilla homered in his first at-bat for Class AAA Rochester on Sunday, then was pulled from the game. Indications are that the Twins will announce after today’s game that Casilla is being recalled.

The Triple-A break coincides with MLB’s All-Star break. I guess the Twins could wait until Thursday to announce the move, but I expect Casilla to be with the Twins on Friday when they open a weekend series in Texas.

It’s going to be a busy morning in the clubhouse, so I’m not sure when I’ll get the lineups posted. Have something like 74 interviews to do today. I will Twitter from the clubhouse when I can.  Gardy, during his weekly radio show, said that Carlos Gomez will play.

Gardy said last night that Bobby Keppel has a sore hamstring, so they were down a reliever. Will check on him when I can. Kevin Slowey is expected to throw in the bullpen today to see how his sore wrist responds.

There was a Christian rock concert here after last night’s game. Slowey and R.A. Dickey addressed the crowd. Slowey told the crowd that his wrist might be something he’ll have to deal with the rest of the season. Will check on that, too.

Update:Slowey was unable to throw today and has been pushed back to playing catch on Wednesday. Anthony Swarzak will remain in the rotation for the time being. It messes things up for the Twins, who hoped to activate Slowey and move Swarzak to the bullpen.

The Twins will go to 12 pitchers after the break. Gardy will sit down with GM Bill Smith to figure out who comes up (Jesse Crain? Rob Delaney?)

I’m also getting some signals that Alexi Casilla will be back up after the All-Star break. It will be his last chance to show he can turn things around. With Casilla back, Nick Punto would move back to short.

Casilla’s missing mojo has set this lineup back significantly.

Sawarzak and Francisco Liriano are available out of the bullpen today.

Heard that the Twins are having trouble signing LSU hitter Blake Dean, and that he’s leaning towards returning to school.

On his radio show Gardy said that Mauer was DH, Redmond catching. He also said that Liriano and Swarzak are available to pitch in relief today.

Also intimated that there will be some adjustments to the roster, that they need another pitcher. If you read between the lines it sounded like Gabino will come up and, likely, Morales will go down.

Also said that Casilla is close to being ready to come up and that they need him since “Nicky is scuffling at the plate.” I assume Tolbert would go down if that move is made.

Love watching Nick’s defense. he’s good at 3rd & short, but best suited for 2nd. He’s a human highlight film at 2nd.
If only he could hit a little better.

Punto is a terrible - regardless of how great his defense is.

He’s not an everyday player. The only organization that was willing to pay him like an everyday player was the Twins…which shows their ineptitude at putting together a contending team.

Bill Smith and Ron Gardenhire should be blamed.

Todd Anthony says:

We need not only to hit better, but we need better starting pitching.

USAFChief says:

Nick has hit in the past.

No, he really hasn’t. Even in 2006, when he hit .290, he wasn’t a very good offensive player. He turned that .290 into a .725 OPS (90 OPS+).

But, you just can’t count on Nick hitting consistently.

Yes, yes you can. That’s the problem.

I’m much more worried about Morneau stating that Mauer will sign based on the aggressiveness of the FO. Should the Twins just close up shop right now? Is anyone surprised the M&M are now saying (even if it is Morneau saying it alone publicly) the same things Hunter was saying?

Good Golly, imagine this team three years from now with no Nathan, Mauer and Morneau…..

4 days for most of the team and this is the line-up they go with to salvage the series? C’mon Gardy, man up! Young, Kubel and Morales need to be playing, even with the lefty going.

JimCrikket says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

“Morneau can’t leave until after 2013.”

Yes. Just like Santana couldn’t “leave until 2009″. And yet, strangely, he did not play for the Twins in 2008.

If this organization doesn’t make the moves necessary to prove to its stars that they are serious about winning, not only will Mauer and Nathan be gone, but Morneau will force them to deal him at least a year early, as well.

And I won’t blame him a bit.

Smith needs to get serious about demonstrating he’s willing (and able) to improve this team… now.

romer says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Sure, Fredo…….now that Morales has come through in the clutch, the Twins will send him to Roch.

I don’t like Harris at SS. It seems as if every game there’s either a flub, an inability to make a hard play, or an obvious lack of reaction and/or lack of range. And now his BA is dwindling. And then there’s the called third strikes. So what’s the use?

Now that he and Punto have probably resolved to their weaknesses, they’d probably accept a L/R platoon situation at SS with no ensuing lack of self-morale. So I’d like to see the platoon at SS.

This would be fine and acceptable if the Twins solve the problem with the hole at 2B. Might as well give Casilla his “last chance”.

And if Keppel recovers nicely from the hammie, I wouldn’t go to 12 pitchers. Duensing still could turn out okay.

If Keppel’s injury lingers and/or if Duensing gets wild again, then that’s a different situation — and Huber and Crain would then be considered.

BTW, here’s to hoping that we see Liriano out of the pen today. Then there’s another possible option to consider if he does well.

mike wants wins says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

No reason to have Redmond on the roster at all right now. But, apparently fielding (heck, having them on the MLB roster) the best players in their system is not part of the Twins and “doing things the right way”.

Al Newman says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

What is Gardy’s problem with Young? Just when he starts hitting, he gets the bench?

romer says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

“Not much going on in 7,8,9 land.”

And given Fredo’s lineup, I think it’s crazy that it’s Redmond instead of Morales.

Maybe Redmond will “own” Buehrle today.

Mauer Power says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

We have three superstars (five-star guys, perennial All-Stars). We have lots of two-star and three-star guys (complementary players). We have no four-star guys right now. At times, Slowey, Baker, Span, Kubel, Cuddyer, Blackburn, Guerrier, Mijares, and others have looked like they are about to become a four-star player, but none of them are quite there yet. A four-star player is a highly dependable player that regularly contributes to the team. We need some of our three-star guys to become four-star guys. It would be great if some guys with great defense would hit more consistently (Crede, Gomez, and Punto, I’m looking at you.) Other guys are actually pretty good but just need to keep on working on everything, like Harris. Despite everything, this team kind of looks like the ‘85 or ‘86 Twins. Lots of promise, but it’s not all put together yet.

Jason says:

July 12th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

How about Ron Gardenhire’s quotes today in Sid Hartman’s column re: Punto. If that doesn’t make you sick on a Sunday, I don’t know what will…

“If everyone else does their job, Nicky will be just fine..”

What the heck does that mean? It’s everyone else’s fault he’s hitting .203? The plan all along was for the rest of the lineup to “mask” his hitting?

“Nicky can really pick it”

Please. We’ve all seen by now that his defense is not head and shoulders above everyone else’s. How many Gold Gloves does he have again?

And then the all-timer…”Nicky can hit .280 in this league”

Yep, he can, Ron. That’s if you’re cool with not a sniff of power and topping out at about 30 RBI.

I hope Bill Smith took a long look at those comments. If I’m Gardy right now, I’m calling out Nicky, not defending him. Gardy’s delusion that Nick Punto is an MLB starter might possibly cost him his job.

the central usually takes at least 90 wins. (last yr 89).
tigers 47-39; have to go 43-33
sox 45-42; have to go 45-30
twins 44-44; have to go 46-28
right now the tigers are playing at a win % to get 89 wins unless they fall back it would be nearly impossible for the twins to go 18 gms over .500 the rest of the way to get 90 wins.

If hunter is still here, they never spend the money on Joe Crede, and its also quite possible that Kubel would have been dealt to avoid the money he’d have made in arbitration. You can’t just plug Hunter and Bartlett into the line up without considering the big picture.

I can’t wait for another great “Twins Instructional” after the game. It is definitely some of the finest entertainment on television and a must see for all baseball fans. Seriously, how can anyone justify spending 15 minutes of air time putting that crap on. If they can’t fill their postgame show with 30 minutes of something worthwhile, they should just cut it to 15 minutes. Those ‘instructional’ are just brutal. Our writers like to toe the line.

Shaun in Chicago says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Just have to get Baker through the 7th.

Shaun in Chicago says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Guess not. Come on Mijares!

Fredo says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

This might have been an interesting time to let Liriano pitch. Given his “first time through the order” success he might have gotten to end the game.

It appears Baker was solved in the last inning and Gardy specifically mentioned Liriano and Swarzak were available in the pen today on his show.

As it is now Gardy will probably just play it with the “real” bullpen.

O twin Fan says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Tell me Baker is coming out, this movie we seen before.

JimCrikket says:

Twins have had issues with the Sox 7-8-9 the whole series.

beetlejuice says:

I’ve got some bad, bad vibes about this.

beetlejuice says:

Atta boy Matty G.

I’m just hoping that Gardenhire won’t be afraid to bring Nathan in if trouble starts a brewin’ in the 8th.

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Um. If I can’t get this network…how do I see this announcement to know it’s been fixed?

minntwins5 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Is the MN Twins front office really that stupid?

They honestly can’t be functioning on all cylinders if they think an infield up the middle with Punto/Casilla will be serviceable. Harris is a career .270 hitter, he has done a fine job at SS.

I also will be really bothered if they send Morales down. Tolbert and Buscher have ZERO business being on this team.

But If your the twins, who cares what you put out on the field, ticket sales are up with this brutal economy!

If they really want to go with that type of infield, and not have the best options on the field, than I will sit here and watch them piss there way to a .500 season.

Punto has a fine glove, blah blah blah. But this is not the NL, hitting .200 is worthless.

rover says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

I’ve got a great idea: Have a “Twins Instructional” on ‘How not to get picked off base!’

Call Me Stupid says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

It would be a bad move to move Punto to SS with Harris playing well there and hitting much better than Punto. Casilla should be battling Punto at 2b.

What was Gardy thinking throwing Baker back out there in the 7th today??? WOW

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Was that Cuddy’s first AB since the hard slide into 2B?

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Great job. Make them pay for the HBP

O twin Fan says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

This team is hard on the emotions as it is. To many holes in dike. This whole Punto favoritism them makes it even more irritating. The article sounded like Gardy is trying to resell good old Punto to the public again. Sort of telling us we aren’t seeing what we are seeing.

beetlejuice says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

Somebody call the fire department, my boy Gomez is on fiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrre.

bert&ernie says:

2 walks merit a starting spot in my book - Gardy’s too for that matter.

White Sox missing Crede more and more with each play.

Fredo says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

See, Harris even causes errors by the other team.

toby says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

“What was Gardy thinking throwing Baker back out there in the 7th”?

Your question presupposes that there’s something actually deserving the epithet “thought” happening somewhere in the fat red head of Professor Gardenshire.

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Haha. AJ had no idea that ball got by him.

O twin Fan says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Thats the 3rd error in the last 2 days for Beckham. White Sox have a problem at 3rd.

JimCrikket says:

Jason says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Here’s some good news for Punto fans…those who had the “over” on his average being over/under Mendoza line at All-Star break can cash in their tickets, it appears.

If we come back from the break with an infield that includes Punto as a starter and we continue to carry Tolbert and Buscher as bench players, it will be sad. Give us a chance, Bill Smith.

O twin Fan says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

They can’t be bringing back Castillo and not sending down Tolbert or Buscher can they? Of course he might send Harris down for team chemistry as he’s doing such a bad job. Morales is a solid player. I would send down Tolbert, he is a young Punto, we don’t need 2 Punto’s.

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:40 pm

JC: I have to agree with you there. Cracked up big time. It was classic. Right down to the “Hey waidaminut!” when he went to take it out of the glove and it wasn’t there.

meister says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Gobblygook,
I like your prediction of Young for Baily. I think you have valued both players accurately, which is frustrating since we gave up a quality arm that’s had ML success… and now he’s only able to fetch a quality arm w/o ML success… veri little success since AA in 2006.

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Yeah the official scorer needs a stern talking to on that one.

stinky says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

UpNorthNut says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Maybe Casilla is being traded for Sanchez?

kirbs34 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Hey all lets talk ball!

JimCrikket says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

On the one hand, I’m not sure what it says about me or the rest of you that I have enjoyed reading the WSox blogs during games more than almost any Twins blog.

On the other hand, how seriously can you really take the opinions of people who don’t even know the names of the players they’re offering opinions about?

One guy was traded to the Mets years ago… the other has alternated between being an infielder for the Twins and the RedWings ever since then. It’s not that hard, really.

USAFChief says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Gardy says things like that to make sure LEN passes them on, so bloggers have days upon days of discussions that are meaning less.

DrDon calling OTHER’s posts meaningless.

Now there’s irony, defined.

JimCrikket says:

So T… do you think it was coincidence that Cuddyer was HBP with first base open after his hard/late slide in to 2B a few innings ago?

kirbs34 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

What does this team need to do to be sucessful in the second half?? First here what is alright with the team,
First base
Third Base
Catcher
Outfield (Five Players who are all good)
Three Starters(Baker, Slowey, Blackburn)
Slowey is a concern
A closer
Three Relief pitchers(Guerrier, Mijares, Dickey)
Sound about right?

DrDon says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

You got it, Chief. :-)

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

oaky. Let’s have a nice clean wrap up and call it a day.

kirbs34 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Now what do we do about Second, Short, and our pitching staff??
Casilla is not the answer, Punto is not the answer, Harris is adequate, if we picked up sanchez, in my eyes that would fix our infield problem.
Sanchez at second
Harris/Punto at short

mickey mental says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

“Three Starters(Baker, Slowey, Blackburn)”

seems to me that slowey (bad wrist) and baker (not so good) are significant concerns.

kirbs34 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Pitching staff??
Pick up a starter in a trade?
Put Perkins or Liriano in the pen??
does jesse crain got it still?

kirbs34 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I think Baker is doing alright. Yes he has been up and down a bit, but has been good enough considering our needs

T says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

I said clean…clean.

And JC: Not by a longshot. I’m just glad they made them pay for doing it.

T says:

Whereas Chief taking potshots at other users is pretty much par for the course.

O twin Fan says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

kirbs, I think Harris is fine at SS till we get someone better, Not willing to count Baker as solid at this point. he seems to break early or break down big late in most outings. Since mid releif is a matter often who is hot I would add Koepper to releif group. DH- Kubel solid vs RHP, Delmon or Morales solid as DH vs LHP.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 12th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

JimCrikket says:

July 12th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

T… kinda what I think about the HBP, too. Have to say, I do wish Twins pitchers would have put AJ in the dirt once Sat night, though, too.

Sox postgame guys are whining about the Dome… as if it played any role in this loss. Well… I suppose maybe if the fences were 20 feet deeper… maybe.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 12th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

JimCrikket says:

July 12th, 2009 at 4:07 pm

All 11 of the Twins RBI were by Gomez, Span and Harris. Not sure what that says, but it says something. Maybe it’s what so many of us have said for so long… this team’s success won’t be determined by M&M, it will be determined by others being productive… or not.

JimCrikket says:

Tolbert is expendable, so is Butcher.

JimCrikket says:

July 12th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Tolbert and Buscher are only two of about 20 “expendable” players on this team right now.

JimCrikket says:

DrDon says:

July 12th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

True, JC, but it was good to see him struggle today, just like AJ’s “where is the ball passed ball”.

Mick says:

Casilla and gomez need to get this offense going again. Punto to bench as role player. Pinch hitter, pinch runner, defense in 8th/9th inning. Gardy that is all he is.

Wings Fan1177 says:

July 12th, 2009 at 6:03 pm

I have watched Casilla and Tolleson play sided by side for a month now. Here is how they Grade out.
Speed Adv Casilla but Tolleson is has stolen just as many bases
Power Adv Tolleson
D-Fence Adv Tolleson Solid at 3 positions 2b,ss,of
Tolleson doesn’t give away as many abs. I believe he is a smarter player.
Casilla is much more Flash! Maybe that is what the Twins like.

Final Report
Tolleson is well rounded and solid in most aspects of the Game
Casilla is a exciting player with lots of Flash

If it were my team I am taking Tolleson

coco says:

July 12th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

While at AAA, did Casilla play any SS? SS is his “natural” position. Would he play better if he did not have to be forced into 2B? I still would like to see a .300 hitter like Sanchez playing @ & batting 2nd. C’mon Bill Smith, make a move to fire up team!
