Red Man is what he is, an efficient backup catcher who is well respected in the clubhouse and who is in his last year. Trade Morales and a good prospect and Young (who no one wants) for an arm from Pittsburgh, Toronto or Arizona. Chris Coste could be acquired for our backup catcher next season. Ben Revere will get a September 2010 call up and be the everyday LF in 2011 with Span in CF. Sanchez in a Twins uniform will not happen. Billy Smith is too gun shy from last season's trade disaster and the Bucs are looking to lock him in long-term along with their SS Wilson. By the way, way to go Garrett Jones, possible NL Player of the Week.

Joe Mauer will become the Twins third baseman (at some point)that is if they can sign him to a new contract. I don't believe ha can catch his whole career and stay healthy.

but thats the thing i am not sure they are taking seriously, just by giving mauer 20mill/yr wont get him signed necessarily. having a quality team behind him will probably be more important than the actual contract size (look at morneau's comments). if they balk this summer and after the season's end, i think mauer walks (obviously after his '10 season) or asks for a trade. hell if i was in that position i probably wouldn't stay, who wants to be a star on a crappy team?

ben,

I don't know how MLB runs their profit sharing. But I believe the team understands Joe's value. Just like you stated. I'm sure they know that to NOT resign him would be more costly than resigning him.

oh and what do you really do with 3.1 billion? you would think after 200-300 million there would be nothing else to buy, maybe a country or something.

on another note the profit sharing is also almost an inhibitor to increasing your spending. not sure if this is correct, but dont you lose that profit sharing spend over x dollars. If that is the case if the twins buy a player for say 10 mill and that puts them over the line for profit sharing, they lose the extra money they are getting for profit sharing so a 10 million dollar player just became a 15 million dollar player due to the profit sharing. dont know, enlighten me if you actually have an understanding as opposed to my ignorance.
