Joe C. and I have been of the opinion for weeks that the Twins won’t make a significant deal before the July 31 deadline. Nothing has happened lately to change my mind. The Twins are doing a lot of talking but, as of late last night/early this morning nothing seemed close.
Here’s some things to chew on as the deadline nears:
Pittsburgh wanted Aaron Hicks or Danny Valencia for Freddy Sanchez: Hicks seems to be too much but, given Sanchez’s ability to play third, should the Twins have thought about Valencia and kept looking for middle infield help? How much should Valencia be valued as a prospect?
Billy Beane doesn’t want to trade Michael Wuertz: Wuertz is under control for another year.
Is Orlando Cabrera a real upgrade?: He’s hitting .377 with a .909 OPS this month. Can it last? And he’s not a No. 2 hitter. I’m just not on him – which makes me worried this will be the move the Twins will make, if they make any move.
Washburn has many suitors: Was told about 10 teams have called Seattle about Jarrod Washburn now. And the Twins don’t do well when they have to beat out a lot of teams for players.
Pittsburgh doesn’t want to trade Matt Capps: Was told by a NL source that the Pirates view him as their closer for the next few years. I think he’d make a good set-up guy. Pittsburgh is willing to move John Grabow but he doesn’t address any of the Twins’ pressing needs.
Will Toronto move players not named Roy Halladay?: The Twins are still in on Marco Scutaro – if Toronto is willing move him. Here’s an update from Toronto.
That’s it for now. Will check on trade talks throughout the afternoon and will have a story in tomorrow’s ink edition. Will post here if there’s breaking news.
