Twins-White Sox: Pregame

Posted on September 21st, 2009 – 5:50 PM
By La Velle

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the rotation will be set up to so everyone not named Jeff Manship will face the Tigers next week in the big four-game at Comerica Park. Manship will start tomorrow against the White Sox then Sunday at Kansas City.

Justin Huber took 23 swings (don’t ask why 23 because I don’t know) today and felt great. He hopes to lick his strained oblique muscle in time to be available before the road trip ends.

As part of the annual rookie hazing, the Twins made them dress up as Teletubbies for the trip to Chicago. And they weren’t allowed to run to their rooms and change, as everyone went out to the Grand Lux Cafe for dinner.

Just heard from the Jim Mandelaro in Rochester. Stan Cliburn and Rich Miller won’t return. Here’s his story.

It’s Oktoberfest at U.S. Cellular Field tonight. They just opened the gates and welcomed fans to the park -  in German. Whoowee, that really has me in the spirit. Ich bin so aufgeregt.

The Yankees scouts have followed the Twins here.

stinky, Beckham is cooling off. He’s essentially a .250 hitter.

86 wins will be needed to win the Central. The Twins will need to win all four series they play, including taking three of four from Detroit. That would give them 85 wins, which I predict would result in a playoff with the Tigers.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

Walter Johnson says:

September 21st, 2009 at 6:52 pm

First! This should be the lineup everynight until the end of the season.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Yeah, me too, trish.

Just saw on FSN that Saturday was Bizarre Night outside the Dome. Looked like fun.

I heard no promotion for it (although I missed Friday night’s broadcast). That’s kind of bizarre.

Fair Weather Fan says:

September 21st, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Shawn, du meinst, warum spielt er nicht, oder warum hat er nicht gespielt

Jedenfalls, er gefaellt Gardy nicht

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Ya, trish and romer, I heard that Hazing and Hazel were at the Dome.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Cut out the German crap, or I will start talking Norwegian.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Yeah, me too, Walter Johnson.

Yesterday Gardy made a stat-based decision in choosing Harris over Morales. He forgot that Harris probably had a mindset of impatience and wanting to get in the action, while being a bit rusty — while Morales has a mindset of unconscious confidence and of being hot.

Hope Morales finds it again tonight.

trish says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Okay… I know that we are all here to talk Twins. But I was hoping for some help in my Creative Writing class. I started on a short story and am looking for some feedback. The short story is on my blog and the link is my name on here. I would greatly appreciate any feedback! Thanks

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Walter Johnson says:

romer,

He did it with Buscher too the day before.

romer says:

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Almost for Span

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Dye should be a DH only.

Maybe for the Twins next year, huh?

jjbiowa says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Okay, so Cabrera did okay there.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:20 pm

questioh here: Why dont they put Cuddyer in between Mauer and Kubel?

Baldkid says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Anyone concerned about Stan Cliburn leaving? Isn’t he the stud pitching coach in the minors? Didn’t the Twins just lose Dave Cuellar (wasn’t that who it was?)?

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Mike Cuellar.

Bunting Twins says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:27 pm

trish,

I read your short story. You requested feedback.

Your story is indicative of an author whose young mind lacks depth.

Read some Voltaire and try again.

Baldkid says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:29 pm

Sorry, my bad, Mike Cuellar…I typed his name off the top of my head. Anyone else concerned about this?

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:31 pm

I know some old guys whose minds are so deep that they’ve lost them.

jjbiowa says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Looks like Cliburn isn’t leaving by his choice. I hope they mean what they say about an entire minor league overhaul because we’ve seen this year how thin it appears to be in the Twins minor league system.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Don’t know much about the minor league coaches. But the Cliburn they fired was the Rochester manager.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Is it possible that the total overhaul of the Twins staff, from beginning to end, is beginning?

Baldkid says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:36 pm

DrDon - that’s what I was wondering as well. I believe I read repeatedly that the Twins teach the same at every level. That’s why I somewhat find it surprising that some coaches/managers would be let go, unless it’s completely based on performance.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Squeeze?

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Bunting Twins…. my suggestion to you is to stop putting trish down. She is a super kid, working hard, and would like real advice not some smart-assed comment. You try again.

USAFChief says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Generally, a squeeze with 2 outs is pretty low percentage, romer…

stinky says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:40 pm

gobbledygookguy says:

stinky says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:44 pm

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Thanks for the reminder, Chief.

OC not setting a good example for Young there.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Yeah Dye’s Sux days are probably over.

Kubel in left next year? Dye the DH?

Walter Johnson says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Delmon is in LF next year.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Some good hitters coming up next inning (3rd) for the Sux.

Gonna cross my fingers and put my socks back on.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Okay WJ, if Delmon can out-produce Dye at the plate.

Gonna be a glut of DH types in the FA market this year. Might get Dye cheap.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Kubes looking like he may be slumping a bit.

Who knows….

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Let’s go get that dude from the Cubs… the maniacal right fielder.

Bunting Twins says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:01 pm

DrDon,

I have never put trish down.

She asked for feedback and I gave her some. She lacks depth. That was my observation and I told her so. She can do something about that. I made a suggestion where she could start acquiring some intellectual depth. I encouraged her to try again.

Walter Johnson says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:01 pm

Dye a Chili Davis type?

Walter Johnson says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:06 pm

All Morales has done every chance he’s had is to hit! Too bad be wasn’t used more.

Bunting Twins says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Dye has impressed me as a player who plays for stats, over playing to help his team win. The Twins don’t need that.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Twins need to un-blous during bunting situations and take one for the team with a graze to the jersey.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Dye could very well be that type, WJ.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Now’s the time, Spanny!

kirby91 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Tolbert has gone from dead space to at least a very useful defensive 3rd baseman. I’ll give him that.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Come on, ump……ignore AJ’s witchcraft.

kirby91 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Not hearing as much inane chirping about Cuddy these days from the likes of T98 and others.

He certainly has his bad moments but only a fool would say this team would have been better off with Cuddy gone and Delmon starting in right this season.

Keep it going Blackie!

USAFChief says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Holy cow, Punto, get the ball to first in the air ferpetesakes.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:40 pm

No Bert, Beckham is an average hitter — except the Twins have let him pad his stats.

kirby91 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Don’t look now Nicky but Tolbert is trying to catch your BA. It’s quite a race!

schurik says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Punto!!!!

kirby91 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:51 pm

You know the Twins world has turned around when Tolbert & Punto combine to get it done.

Keep it up and break this thing open!

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Wonder if both Twins catchers (now the Red is #3) can finish above .370.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:54 pm

One way of knocking the Twins out of the pennant race…..

:(

schurik says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:56 pm

jjbiowa says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Double steal…wow, when was the last time we saw the Twins execute one??

howeda says:

September 21st, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Those watching on tv, where did Span get hit, does he look OK? Listening to Dazzle is always difficult

September 21st, 2009 at 9:03 pm

Right in the head, I’m shocked he wasn’t unconscious.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:05 pm

First looked like back of helmet. Then it looked like the top right side.

bufftwins says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Hey Bill Smith! Where is Jason Pridie now? Couldn’t believe they didn’t bring up an extra outfielder and even more so when they didn’t add another player when Morneau and Crede were done for the season. What happens if something happens to D. Young or Kubel tonight? Tolbert to the OF in the middle of a pennant race!

Rob says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:09 pm

According to the Ozzie rules, do we get to hit one of theirs now??

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Frickin’ Williams threw 16 pitches, only 6 for strikes.

bufftwins says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I guess Cuddy would go back to the OF and Harris to 1B. Still can’t believe we didn’t add a healthy body after Morneau and Crede went down and then Huber got hurt as well.

Camden says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Our OF depth is more than fine. You could also give up the DH and put Morales at 1B, or Buscher for that matter. I’m sure Tolbert or Punto could play in the OF if desperate.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Hey, Twins are up 5-0 and we are still can’t be believing things. What a crock. Go Twins.

La Velle says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:18 pm

Span is doing O.K. Just has a slight headache and is resting in the clubhouse.

kirby91 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:19 pm

There are those who think if Delmon more playing time he can show himself to be a very good major leaguer. Instead, the he gets to play the more we get to see the true Delmon. That’s not a good thing. Maybe another couple of months on the bench will produce a week and half hot streak!

stinky says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:20 pm

gotta love gamedays’s injury update:

Minnesota Twins left fielder Denard Span left the game due to an injured head.

Mike in SD says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Did anyone listening catch why there was a formal complaint filed against Dazzle? (I was only half-listening until I heard something like “…and that is why xx filed a formal complaint against me.”) He didn’t seem concerned when he told the story.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Thanks, LaVelle, was just going to ask if any update on Span.

Dr. Don, With all due respects, I believe that the Twins’ minor league (AAA) pitching coach is Bobby Cuellar not Mike Cuellar, the former O’s left hander. Not trying to be a smart a.. becuz I have made the same mistake myself, and I blame it all on my lack of knowledge of Voltaire.

romer says:

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well”…..Voltaire

Bunting Twins should try to emulate Voltaire while he is reading Voltaire.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Philosophy time??? OK…. According to Al McGuire, NCAA Champion Coach at Marquette, NCAA Basketball commentator: “I think everyone should go to college, get a degree, and then spend 6 months as a bartender and 6 months as a taxi driver. Then they would really be educated.”

sane says:

September 21st, 2009 at 10:45 pm

If it is Al McGuire vs. Voltaire, I am going to have to reject the half-potted New Yorker.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Voltaire was from New York? :)

sane says:

At least DiNardo had a meltdown and got blasted. I believe the Twins face him Sunday with Blackburn.

Shaun in Chicago says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:27 pm

DrDon,

The Twins sure enough came through. The silence of the Sox fans was golden tonight-except for the guy in front who wouldn’t stop complaining about the Sox giving the game way and the idiot who shouted “too bad it wasn’t Mauer” when Span got hit in the head.

Shaun in Chicago says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:29 pm

romer-

I actually was down by the Twins dugout during the Punto interview. I was shouting at Robby. He told some of us he wish he was drunk like some of the Twins fans down there.

DrDon says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Thanks for the report, Shaun. Chicago fans are beauties, aren’t they?

T says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Hopefully the Twins can give fans something to continue cheering about in their final visit to the Cell this season.

romer says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:37 pm

And thanks for yelling to us folks in Minnesot, Shaun. Gotta keep Gardy and the players pumped!

What romer said, Shaun….Me too.

Expression451 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:56 pm

I think we need to make Punto a September call up every year. This is the only month of the season that boy’s bat isn’t made out of fairy-tales and wishes.

It’s good to see Blackburn on top of his game… he’s my favorite pitcher on this staff.

Expression451 says:

September 21st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Is Cuddyer playing himself into a good trade so we can get an ACE for next season?

scottz says:

September 22nd, 2009 at 12:23 am

Expression,

Prior to this year, I was one of the Cuddyer bashers. I happily admit to him proving me wrong this year - he has earned his money this year, for sure. I think the more likely trade candidate is Kubel - a good, young, lefty bat coming into his own with a great contract (from the team side). Twins get to keep Cuddyer’s right handed bat, which is something they want.

Unless the Twins don’t make the playoffs and Gardy gets canned, then Cuddy could easily be the one to go.

romer says:

September 22nd, 2009 at 1:45 am

Not worried about losing Span in this second game of the series.

He lead off the game swinging at the 2nd pitch and making an out. Gomez can do that.

Day before, he struck out 4 times. Gomez can do that.

So I hope Gomez leads off the 1st inning, and I hope he doesn’t put pressure on himself.

And I’ll enjoy the increased D in the OF.

romer says:

September 22nd, 2009 at 2:33 am

“Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the rotation will be set up to so everyone not named Jeff Manship will face the Tigers next week…”

Which means Manship and Duensing will start half of the remaining 12 Twins games.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s Jackson, Verlander, Robertson, and Porcello will start 11 of their remaining 13 games.

romer says:

September 22nd, 2009 at 2:44 am

Here are the remaining pitching matchups:

22 Manship v. Danks
23 Duensing v. Buehrle
24 OFF
25 Pavano v. Tejeda
26 Baker v. DiNardo
27 Manship v. Greinke

28 Blackburn v. Porcello
29 Duensing v. Verlander
30 Pavano v. Robertson
01 Baker v. Bonine

02 Manship v. DiNardo
03 Blackburn v. Greinke
04 Duensing v. Hochevar

Blackburn pitches on the 27th on 6 days rest. Duensing pitches on the 28th on 5 days rest.

They could skip Manship on Oct 02, and pitch Blackburn, Duensing, and Pavano on 3 days rest for the last three games of the season.

Is Cuddyer playing himself into a good trade so we can get an ACE for next season?

Let’s wait to discuss trading our current 1B until we’re certain that our regular 1B is going to be back at full health next year.

Not that I think trading one of your top contributors (ALL SEASON) is a wise move under any circumstance.

If the Twins Trade Cuddy, that means they’re going into rebuilding mode. It is highly unlikely that any team would value Cuddy over an ACE, Naturally, I hope they are not trading him.

More likely, they’re considering the possibility of bringing him back to the infield for next season. With his ability at the big league level cemented, a move back to third is unlikely to hamper his offense.

It also could open the lineup a bit, inserting another plus offensive bat without subtracting much defense.

Delmon could move back to the position that he played better at in Tampa, or we have a bunch of young outfielders with good defense and plus offense in the minors. And even looking outside the organization, corner outfielders are a lot easier to come by than quality infielders.

Hey, these boards got mentioned on Reusse and Souhans sport chat this morning on KSTP AM 1500 the Talk Station. Souhan said people who frequent these boards must not like their jobs.

This one of his may be more apt.

Trish, I read your short story. First, let me just say ignore what Craig, I mean, Bunting Twin, said. Not just about you and your story, but about everything.

I’m old enough that prom is not one of those memories that is near the surface. Your story brought that back for me. So, you have something to work with here. Stylistically, it’s a bit rough. The transitions are not smooth and I think you need to review some word choices. It needs polishing, in other words. Keep at it.

Now, back to the Twins. 2 1/2 back. Who woulda thunk it? Go Twins!!

Is Morrales DHing today or is Gardo going to find out that Buscher went 2-4 against Danks in 2006 so he will DH (and strike out 3 times)?
