Twins try to sweep White Sox

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 – 6:45 PM
By La Velle

Sorry this is late. Had a minor emergency.

Signs continue to point toward Francisco Liriano starting on Sunday in Kansas City. My guess is that it will be official on Friday.

Denard Span looked and sounded like his old self today. He told manager Ron Gardenhire he’s available to pinch hit or be a late defensive substitute. Signs point to him returning to the starting lineup on Friday.

Funny stuff before the game. White Sox GM Kenny Williams met with the media and told them that his team will go back to taking infield before games, which very few teams do these days. I don’t know if more  infield solves all the problems in the Windy City. But Williams is a very determined man….

There are some indications that one trait the Sox would like to have from the Twins is mental toughness. Is mental toughness a big edge for the Twins? At least they still have a shot at the postseason while the Sox played themselves out of the race. The Twins deserve some credit for not giving up.

Should be fun to watch the two aces duel.

No Morales??? Harris better produce!

Twins will win the division….the cover of Sports Illustrated for 9/28/90 is a shot of Comerica Park with the headline Detroit. That should be enough to jinx the Tiggies.

This was the first I’d seen that Time, Inc. bought a house in Detroit and is rotating journalists, photographers, bloggers, etc. in and out for all their magazines/holdings. That should be enough to spin Detroit into a further depression.

jjbiowa says:

Sorry, should be for 9/28/09….oops

I am usually a fan of Gardy, but where is Morales. He needs to be a DHing. Harris isn’t getting it done.

WILDfan says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Cleveland loads the bases in the first 2 innings and has 1 run to show for it.

trish says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm

haha nice post GGG!!!

AaronK says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:56 pm

He has hit Mark Buehrle pretty well. That may be the reason.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Not bad enough the Tribe gives up four in the first but they’ve loaded the bases in each of the first two innings and come away with only one stinking run.

No matter how well they play the Twins maybe screwed by the schedule. Getting the only team interested in playing in September not in a race, KC.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm

And now it’s 6-1.

Think1Way says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Liriano can’t be worse then Manship..can he?

Come on CLE

Mary Ann says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:01 pm

That bottom 1/3 of the lineup was so productive, Gardy’s going with it again. Is Morales in Gardy’s doghouse? Does Harris have killer #’s against Buehrle as well? Inquiring minds wanna know.

jjbiowa says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Nice of Cleveland to roll over.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Cleveland is terrible thats why, were not going to get any help from them

hugh morris says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Nice to see somebody finally showed up… wobble

Walter Johnson says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm

Harris (.259) at DH instead of Morales (.358). Shows how little I know about baseball. That’s why Gardenhire makes the big bucks.

Walter Johnson says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Morales is .563 (9-for-16) with a .650 on-base percentage in five career games at U.S. Cellular Field. In eight career games against the White Sox he has hit .632 (12-for-19) and has had at least one hit in seven of those eight games.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Our media members would never dare ask Gardy why a player wasn’t in the lineup.

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Harris almost cranked one last night. Otherwise he was pretty dismal.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:08 pm

Tribe fans must really be glad they “stole” Materson and only had to give the BoSox Victor Martinez.

Of the many ways there is a bias towards the NYY & BoSox in baseball the worst may be the fact that their prospects are by in large over hyped. They look good next to $25 mill a year guys. Just as the Twins (Johan deal with Mets. Yanks & B-town guys who were in minors or just up by in large have not shown to be studs), Cleveland (Victor Martinez).

On that line, think the Brewers wish they still had LaPorta and never got CC? No. Be careful what you wish for Billy when trading away high priced stars for unkowns. Not may many, as of late anyway, pan out.

Camden says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Yea watching Detroit is kind of pointless (unless they manage to lose), even if we lose a game today it will be picked up somewhere else. It’s all going to come down to next weeks series.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm

LaPorta def has been a bust. Another prospect that is hyped up is Bucholz for the Red Sox and my opinion is not that high of him, but thats just me.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Camden there is a point to watching Detroit, if we go 3.5 back going into Detroit, that is tough, a 4 game sweep of the tigers in there park where they have an outstanding record would be pretty tough.

Yay gomez takes 2 pitches

jjbiowa says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:13 pm

All the Twins need to do is win all their remaining games….sure way into the playoffs.

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I agree with some here, why Harris? Morales seems to me the better choice.

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:45 pm

OC has not been as nice a pickup as you guys think. I too thought he was, but his stats say otherwise.

That being said, he is on fire right now and i hope they do bring him back on a two year deal.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:46 pm

Think1 ,

Your right we should have gotten Freddy Sanchez who has played like 20 games since arriving with the Giants.

OC has been a nice pickup, if your going to knock his glove, i dont want to hear it, he makes the plays he needs to make

Aaron says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Big spot for Cuddy

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:48 pm

mttwinsfan says:

Swings at ball 2…..

sigh

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Minntwins5,

Dont get me wrong, OC has been an ok pickup and i would like to see him and Pavano back next year, but OC hasnt been as good as a lot of you think…

In 47 games with the Twins, OC is hitting:

.251/.285/.399/.648

Fair Weather Fan formerly Known as Not So Original Kevin says:

I sure hope the White Sox dont roll over like this against the Tigers this weekend.

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 7:59 pm

I agree bring them both back, they will help stabilize the team a bit.

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:00 pm

93 mph from Duensing. And pretty effortless looking at that.

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:02 pm

CY Duensing

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:03 pm

“I sure hope the White Sox dont roll over like this against the Tigers this weekend.”

Probably will. Twins’ chances are so slim.

Only 5 teams in the AL this year can say they made it to the last 10 games with a chance at post-season. At least the Twins are 1 of them.

DrDon says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

That is acceptable, Think.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Atta boy Harris!

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm

There’s talk they’re gonna shut him down.

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

Aaron says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Game Over for Buehrle…Wow

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Yeah, a short start, Dick. But still like 65 pitches in 3.1 innings.

Maybe Ozzie will do us a favor.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Tigers are thrashing the Tribe, Twins will have to keep pace. Tigers have had a little resurgence, saw the Twins as the “objects in mirror are closer than they appear”

Fair Weather Fan formerly Known as Not So Original Kevin says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:09 pm

maybe the twins can handle Greinke this way

man, I would have hoped the Indians could have at least taken 1 game from the Tigers this week, the Sox arent going to help the Twins

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Bucket says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:10 pm

So has Duensing locked up a spot in the ‘10 rotation? Is this for real?

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:11 pm

About the only thing that could make this better is if Cleveland pulled off the best comeback of the season. I can’t put the A’s is that spot because it still hurts too much!

Walter Johnson says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:11 pm

I keep waiting for the Indians to come back.

Aaron says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:13 pm

I at least hope the Indians can win tomorrow, but that does not look good with Verlander going. I guess we will be 3 out going to KC.

Fair Weather Fan formerly Known as Not So Original Kevin says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:14 pm

The Sox just dont care anymore, do they? This is almost sad to see how they have thrown in the towel like this

DrDon says:

They do play again tomorrow, we have an off day.

Fair Weather Fan formerly Known as Not So Original Kevin says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Yea Kirby, that blown 10 run lead to the As, and Nathans blown save against the Sox are looking especially painful right now

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I’m worried about all the games with KC, they are playing as good or better than they did at the start of the season.

DrDon says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Not against us, Fair…But hope they hitch up the boot straps when they play Detoilet next week.

DrDon says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Hold on now, Steve…We have had our share of comebacks this year too. They have a way of balancing out.

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Duensing hasn’t exactly been fooling anyone, but you can’t argue with the results so far.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:18 pm

DrDon, that would be nice. I have a feeling this may all come down to game 162 for all the marbles.

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Exactly, USAFCheif,

which is why im worried about how long he can keep being CY Duesning

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Jeebus, Punto, that’s the second game in a row you can’t throw the ball from second to first all the way in the air.

Nice dig again, Cuddyer.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Double plays are nice aren’t they? Especially when it is Konerko hitting into one and AJ also gets out!

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Sorry, Buehrle with apparently only 57 pitches tonight.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Duensing leaving a few up a bit tonight, not quite as sharp.

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:26 pm

All right.

Minimal damage.

That DP was huge.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Okay Twins put this one away and save some bullpen tonight!

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 pm

im worried about how long he can keep being CY Duesning

How about into November?

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:32 pm

Why’d he start that bum!

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Big innning here for Duensing.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Fair Weather Fan formerly Known as Not So Original Kevin says,

It took me 15 minutes to stop crying after your post. The sting still hurts. Then again it hard to complain as much as last year about a loss or two considering how much crap baseball they played this season. Like Sept. series with the A’s and Indians for starters.

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:36 pm

“which is why im worried about how long he can keep being CY Duesning”

So what’s wrong with what Bert’s been saying during Duensing’s last 2 starts?

He’s a 4-pitch pitcher with good movement, he knows how to add and subtract velocity, his mechanics are smooth, he’s got good control, he pitches within himself, he’s pitched a few innings this year, and — as I reported above — he hits 93 mph when he wants to.

And now — since he’s pitching in a pennant race and doing all of the above — he looks like the real deal to me.

If he were a Garza hotshot type, then you go he’s pitching on adrenaline or relying too much on a FB or pitching his arm off or the League will figure him out.

But Duensing has too many types of pitches (with the adding and subtracting) to be figured out. He pitches like a quintessetial pitcher.

My only question is his arm strength over a long season.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:37 pm

11-3, here comes the Tribe! :)

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Can’t afford to have Gardy “try to let his guy get 5 for the win tonight”.

Too much at stake.

DrDon says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 pm

Another BIG DP.

thrylos98 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 pm

So has Duensing locked up a spot in the ‘10 rotation? Is this for real?

so far the ‘10 rotation looks like (in no order) :

Baker
Slowey (his surgery is nothing to worry about)

Blackburn/Duensing/Liriano/Perkins/Bonser/Swarzak (about equal chances to make it)

I hope that Perkins finds a new home some other place via a trade. Other than that hard to tell about 2010…

SLAM-MAN says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 pm

No thanks to Cleveland as they are being fileted by the tiggers…go twins…have to win…make them sweat

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:41 pm

thrylos98, think they have room for Pavano? Would he be worth trying to sign?

thrylos98 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Do you think that Cabrera has some extra inner incentive to play better against the WSux? To me eyes it seems so…

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Ozzie secretly wants us to win this game and the divison.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Unless he gets traded I think there is little doubt Blackie will be in the 2010 rotation. Even as a 500 pitcher he still has pitched well in big games the past two seasons and will have shown his bosses enough to be considered a 3rd or 4th guy.

thrylos98 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Steve H,

They need another starter. Not sure that Pavano is the answer. My recent darling has been Alcides Escobar… I hope they sign him instead of Pavano, but you never know based on how the Twins operate

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Gotta consider Pavano in there too for the rotation.

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Thrylos,

What are you saying? The Brewers are not giving PT to Escobar so he can leave.

Pavano has under a 3.55 ERA with the Twins. Why would he not be the answer?

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Escobar is a shortstop with Milwaukee correct?

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Alcides Escobar is a SS, thrylos.

Kelvim Escobar, maybe?

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm

They’ll try to sign Pavano and I think he wants to be here also.

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Slowey, Duensing, Baker, Pavano, Blackburn.

No room for Liriano.

Yeah the ball was coming out of his hand great last night. But he’s still wild, and looked awfully discouraged in the dugout last night.

If he’s terrific, Duensing has options.

Mark says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 pm

The White Sox are laying down like the dogs we knew they were. Unfortunately, they have six left with Detroit, so we can’t count on them for more than one win, if that. The Twins will probably have to do it head to head against Detroit. Tomorrow’s swing will be huge… two or three out.

thrylos98 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 pm

mea culpa…

I meant Aroldis Chapman not Alcides Escobar (he is a SS).

As far as Pavano goes:

he is ok for a 3-4 pitcher. The Twins have lots of those and cheaper. Gotta look higher.

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Ozzie will go after the Tigers. I can see a split in those 6 games, easy.

Steve H says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Decent pitch count for Duensing, he needs a good inning here

USAFChief says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

The Twins aren’t going to sign Aroldis Chapman, nor is it likely he’d help the rotation in 2010.

I’d like them to sign Harden.

Pavano has been a godsend, but he can go post a 4.75 ERA for someone else.

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

With M&M, Cuddy&Kube, why WOULDN’T Pavano want to stay?

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:55 pm

Ya, I’ll even stay.

Aaron says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

:(

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

So Liriano starts on sunday?

romer says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Not looking like the Sux are laying down here.

kirby91 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

He’s done… Even though I am not really confident in Keppel

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 8:59 pm

No to Harden. Re-sign Pavano to a 2-3 year deal. He’s been a nice #2 for the Twins.

Liriano
Baker
Slowey
Pavano
Blackburn

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Only Ozzie laying down. He can’t field for Cabrera.

brookshirebabewatcher says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 9:01 pm

We’re gonna need more than a 1 run lead tonight for Nathan. The offense has to go on the offense.

h2oface says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 9:02 pm

i just don’t get it sometimes. duensings pitches have been way up for 3 innings, the sox are spanking the ball, and with as important as this game is…. gardentired can’t seem to see what is so obvious and get him out BEFORE the damage.only an inning late gardentired.

Think1Way2 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 9:04 pm

Why did they keep Keppel and not Dickey

minntwins5 says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Duensing was shaky starting in the 4th, should have never come out to throw a pitch in the 6th. To many cookies right down the plate.

Need some more runs! Must win tonight, Tigers are going to win tonight and tomorrow.

thrylos98 says:

Hindsight is 20/20. If Gardenhire takes him out after 5 he gets criticized for taking out a guy who has a low pitch count who has only given up 2 runs and putting extra strain on the bullpen.

Re-sign Pavano to a 2-3 year deal. He’s been a nice #2 for the Twins.

Liriano
Baker
Slowey
Pavano
Blackburn

Wait…you want to sign Pavano to a 3 year deal? To be a #2?

That in itself is crazy, but why did you then list him 4th?

I’m not too worried about Nathan. He’s had bumps in the road in the past and always came out of it before too long. We’re spoiled these days–do you remember the excitement that Guardado and Hawkins brought every game?
In other news, with Boston’s win, the Twins are now officially eliminated from wild card contention.

Mary Ann says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Nice production throughout the lineup tonight. I question some of Gardy’s moves, but Harris had a solid night along with Punto. Gardy brought Morales in and they IBB’d him, and he came around to score. Good to see them finding ways to win & alway nice to sweep Chicago, especially at the Cell.

As for Punto starting, I think he seems to struggle more when he’s “anointed” the starter out of spring training. He seems to do better “as a spark” off the bench or at least playing in a lesser role than an everyday starter.

Eddie Shore says:

September 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Settle down. No one here is begging for Punto bronze statue night. He’s starting because of the available options. Gardenhire isn’t just sitting there with a bench filled with all-star infielders. Let’s see Punto, Tolbert, Harris, Casilla, and Buscher… rotate at will. He’s also hitting .314 this month so cut him just an ounce of slack.

Does it negate his brutal first 5 months? Absolutely not… but for now, all I care about is winning games and we are doing just that. Relax and enjoy it.

AM says:

September 24th, 2009 at 8:29 am

Can the Twins run the table?

I doubt it. However, if they win their next 7 games, they will have at a minimum a 1 game leading heading into the final series, more depending on how Detroit does in their four non twin games.

Of course, that would mean a 10-0 road trip, beating Buerhle, Greinke, a d Verlander.

Who was it who said he hoped the Twins don’t make the playoffs because they don’t deserve it and it would convince Bill Smith to stand pat? That was wrong on many levels. Mainly, the Twins have been playing like they deserve it. Oh, and the whole “anything can happen in a short series” thing, too…

T says:

September 24th, 2009 at 8:37 am

Another nerve wracking win…but like I said after the last win, at this point in the season I don’t care if it’s 8-0, 8-6, or 100-2….just as long as the Twins are the ones with more runs than the other team.

Great to see EVERYBODY contributing to wins over the last three games though. At least EVERYBODY in the lineup. Pitching staff had a tough go the last few nights, so a much-needed night off and hopefully an offense that is clicking can help them through this bit of a hump and go strong into the Tigers series.

Still within reach. Shocked that the Twins could struggle as much as they did and still be playing meaningful games this late in the season.
