Mijares, Leyland, Laird fined. Bonderman, McClendon suspended

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 – 4:36 PM
By La Velle

Jose Mijares has been fined an undisclosed amount for throwing behind Adam Everett during Thursday’s game with the Tigers. Since the action occurred before the warning was issued, Mijares avoided a suspension.

But Jeremy Bonderman plunked Delmon Young after the warning was issued. So Bonderman was fined and suspended three games. Hitting coach Lloyd McClendon was fined and suspended one game, since he was running the team when the plunking occurred. Jim Lelyand and Gerald Laird were fined.

“By their own admission, their pitcher made a mistake,” Leyland said Friday to the Detroit Free Press. “I’m just sad to see the Tigers pay so much more for the mistake than the guy who made the mistake.”

Mijares said today that he felt bad about how he handled the situation and planned to apologize to the team before the game.

Brendan Harris is the DH today, probably because he had two hits and a sacrifice fly off Lenny DiNardo in Kansas City last Saturday.

Orlando Cabrera is 1-for-11 against DiNardo. Joe Mauer is  1-for-7.

About 45,000 fans are expected here tonight. Just saw Rod Carew outside the Twins clubhouse. It’s going to be an exciting night.

Update: Gardy said that Brian Duensing is available out of the bullpen tonight if needed. If he does pitch, Carl Pavano would probably start on Sunday.

“We’ve got to win three games,” he said. “That’s’ what we’re gonna try to do.”

The offense needs to break out tonight, Manship really scares me and another junk lefty worries me too regardless of the last time we faced him.

So despite so Gardy haters killing him for his public response to the whole incident, he played it just right and helped avoid and suspension penalty to his team.

Don’t always agree with him but this was a good move on his part.

Is anyone in Detoilette going to miss any time this year? They’ll just appeal and be suspended next year, right?

Joe R from swmn now in Omaha says:

Maybe they’ll put live broadcasts on the dome screen of the Tigers/White Sox game during the inning breaks…. you can bet the suite tvs will have the ESPN game on…..

I was wondering what was wrong, romer. We need a beer soon, but have to wait till the White Sox game starts.

Baseball’s unwritten rules, written by 13 year olds (and I apologize to all 13 year olds for the insult). Get over it. He hit someone intentionally, you can hurt someone that way. The rules are pretty simple, hit someone intentionally, get suspended. What is hard to understand about that?

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm

bonderman hardly pitches for them since he has been injured so much, he will probably serve it and get it over and done with so it won’t be holding over him

bufftwins says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Hard to believe it’s the biggest game of the season and our starting pitcher has 0 wins. A pitcher Gardy said last week wasn’t ready for the “big stage.” So disappointing that Liriano has reached a point in his career that he can’t be counted on to start a game. At least the Royals starter has 0 wins as well. Should be an interesting night and hopefully one hell of a weekend. Hope Mijares can bounce back. Latin players tend to sulk and pout when things go wrong. Sure wish Delmon would have reacted better. But he did throw a bat at an umpire once before. WIN TWINS!

Little Miss Sarcasm says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm

manship is fine for an inning or two at the beginning of a game, Frankie is fine for the same, just not at the start, it is a bullpen game all the way, just started with Jeff…. you know he will have the quickest hook of his life out there and might go out and throw a one hitter

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Agree all the way, LMS.

wheels says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:48 pm

I don’t want to start a whole thing, but bufftwins, I’m not sure sulking and pouting is specifically a “Latin” thing. It’s more of a general “human” thing.

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Manship pitched pretty well out of the bullpen on Sunday. Hopefully he learned from that outing and can apply it to a start.

DrDon says:

Right on LMS… sometimes the worser are gooder and sometimes the gooder are worser. That is bezzbaw.

Twins just announced that Les Straker will pitch Sunday on 7,665 days rest.

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:34 pm

bufftwins is your clubhouse PoD leader, for his 8:34

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:35 pm

When will Gardy substitute?

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm

I have to say I have really liked what I have seen from Delmon at the plate the last month or so.

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm

As a critic of Gardenhire, I have been very impressed by Gardenhire yesterday and today. I wanted to give credit where it’s due.

Gardenhire handled the beanball situation absolutely masterfully. The Tigers lose a bullpen pitcher and the Twins don’t. Great job, Gardy!

Secondly, Gardy played Brendan Harris today even after his bad game yesterday. Nice vote of confidence for Harris! He’s a good player who is better than he played yesterday. Today, Harris turns in an RBI double.

Well, my other criticisms are still out there, but there is a divisional race on.

Go Twins!

bufftwins says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm

USAFChief: Haha. Thank you.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Wow that was only the 4th inning

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:43 pm

All right. Assuming the lead holds up, let’s put Morales in for Mauer after Mauer catches this inning.

Give Mauer rest for tomorrow afternoon’s game.

DrDon says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:44 pm

thanks, Chief, I was gonna nominate buff’s 8:34. Good Call.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:45 pm

A baggie stop. Last one ever?

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Agreed, Mauer Power.

I was hoping Kubel would be taken out as well.

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Great victory for the White Sox today.

Thank you, Chicago and the White Sox organization!

I don’t think I’m the only one who is starting to think the White Sox are going to be very good next year. Peavy will add a lot to the Sox.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:47 pm

“I have to say I have really liked what I have seen from Delmon at the plate the last month or so.”

Based on his current kinda dismal stats only, he woulda got to 15 HR’s and 90 RBIs if he had gotten his usual 600+ AB’s this year.

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I bet it’s Manship’s last inning if he can get through it. Good outing so far.

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 pm

Mauer Power - Beckham looks like the real deal as well…

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Send a case of champaign to the White Sox clubhouse in Detroit!

DrDon says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Not yet, DLF…wait till Sunday.

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

I think they should allow Manship to pitch as long as possible tonight … at least through (7) innings. We need to save the bullpen for the next two (or three) games.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Please put Gabino in after Manship is done

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Beckham looks like the real deal as well…

If the Twin could take just one player from the Sox, it’d be Beckham in my opinion.

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Come on, Manship! Get this guy and qualify yourself for a major league victory.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 pm

AWFULLY fortunate that we piled the runs on for Manship.

He’s doing as expected tonight.

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:54 pm

DrDon - I would suggest that we prohibit the Pale Hose from opening the case until after Sunday’s game in Detroit. It is an incentive … not a reward.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm

no time to let up …this is a strange game at times….no letting them back in at all….

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm

I’d take Peavy or Buerhle from the White Sox. They have lots of other good players, too, including Beckham.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm

The hardest thing to do in baseball is pitch with a 10-run lead.

kirby91 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Maybe Chief. Or maybe not. Your’s is plausible but no more so than mine. Both have a long list evidence to support them in baseball and sports history.

Either way I’ll take it too :)

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Let Mauer and Kubel bat, and then sub for them. New pitcher time.

Manship has done a good, clutch job tonight for the Twins.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

82 pitches for Manship.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 8:58 pm

56 were strikes.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

How old is Delmon anyway? Anybody know?

... says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Alright, time to sit Joe so he is well rested tomorrow.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm

And about 30 that inning, WJ.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:02 pm

what a weekend this could be for the dome and then follow it up mon nite with the vikes and pack….nice time to be in the twin cities….and maybe a playoff on tue at the very least….

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Delmon just turned 25, didn’t he?

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Delmon JUST turned 24, WJ

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Delmon is 24 I believe.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm

And Romer ^ :)

Mauer Power says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm

No substitutions at the top of the 6th.

Come on, Gardy! Get Manship, Mauer, Kubel, and probably Cabrera out of there.

DY is 24.

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:07 pm

You got a few fish to bite, Walter.

;-)

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm

;)

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm

i would pull nobody out of this at least the 8th….cant be too careful now

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Go-Go won’t be 24 until December.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm

Go-Go won’t be 24 until December.

But he plays like he’s much much younger.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:11 pm

C’mon Dudeship, take care of these guys.

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:11 pm

In many ways, this has been a lost year for both Gomez and Young in terms of the opportunity to improve their games.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Shameless, WJ.

:)

LA_Twin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:18 pm

twins are trying to turn this into a game

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:19 pm

twins bats are going to have to come alive yet in this game….natives getting restless…..

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Into each life a little Crain must fall.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Glad to see Crain rounding back in to his old form :-(
I am having flashbacks to the infamous 12-1 game in Oakland…

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

They are cheering in Detroit.

LA_Twin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

no team knows how to squander a lead like the twins

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 pm

Nathan for 2 tonight?

:(

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Chief,

Who said “Mahay while the sun shines.”?

That is my nomination for POY.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm

When Bill Smith goes shopping over the winter I hope he finds some replacements for Keppel and Crain in the pen.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm

No deja vu tonight…….

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Lets no freak out about Crain. He has no R in SEP

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Which of the two relievers Mahay and Rauch is signed for next year? I was thinking Rauch is signed and Mahay is a free agent, is that correct?

mickey mental says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

dumb gardy leaving his starting lineup in …

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Okay experts…….

Mahay could be valuable the next couple days. Who should pitch the 7th with a 5-run lead?

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:28 pm

Good thing we didn’t pull Mauer and Kubel. We may need their bats yet tonight.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Let’s get those runs back and then throw Keppel out there.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm

I think Gardy will go with Keppel in the 7th, Guerrier in the 8th and we’ll see in the 9th, depending on the score.

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Open question … what are your thoughts regarding the use of Mijares tonight in light of yesterday’s melt-down? Give him a night off to regain his senses or send him right back out there to demonstrate your ongoing confidence in him?

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Detroit only had three hits tonight.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm

Good question. I say use him if you need a lefty. Definately.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:32 pm

DLF- Mijares is the best we’ve got in the pen. I’d rather save him for the “Greinke game” if we can keep it close, but if the Royals make it 10-7 or 10-8 tonight, you’ve got to put him in.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Who’s facing Greinke?

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 pm

And again, WJ — even before the game tonight, ESPN’s Sutcliffe said it seemed tense in their dugout.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Walter- Peavy, Danks, Floyd and company are going to be a fearsome starting rotation next year. The rookie Hudson looked good when called up also.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:35 pm

my stomach hurts…. and here comes keppel

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:35 pm

whose dugout? Detroit’s?

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:35 pm

we still need to get nathan thru the 9th…lately the heart rate picks up when he comes in….

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I think too much is being made over the Young-Mijares flak. Remember how the A’s rode fistfights and discontent to 3 straight world championships?

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:37 pm

ya never know what your going to get from keppel - so far so good…let him go into the 8th if this keeps up…

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:37 pm

WJ-Blackburn goes tomorrow with Duensing in the pen.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Here’s something to think about.

KC - 11 hits
MIN - 10 hits

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm

And Buerhle. Yeah, they’ll be tough without having to throw a Contreras or Colon in there every fifth game.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Tehan scares me. If Keppel doesn’t keep it down it will be 10-7

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

BOB,

Rauch is signed. Mahay is around 40 years old

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Good pitch Keppel!

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Bob - I vividly remember Reggie Jackson and Manager Billy Marten being restrained from fighting each other in the Yankee dugout during a play-off game. I agree … it sounds as though everyone has kissed and made-up.

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 pm

Walter: I don’t want to give anything away, I’ll have a PoY special next week.

But I agree the “Mahay while the sun shines” post deserves considerattion.

I have a ton of research left to do, but I think everyone will enjoy the “Chief-ee’s.”

At least I hope so.

You will be featured prominantly. That could be good or bad, by the way.

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Let’s get a couple back here.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:42 pm

No, let’s not get a coupel back. Let the hitters rest up and end this game ASAP

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Damn it Tolbert

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Okay, now I know we’re going to pull this thing out. I’m sitting here playing bookworm while watching this game. The last word I formed:

PENNANT

DLF says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Punto … let’s try that squeeze play again!

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Chief,

Is Howard going to let you be guest blogger for a day to unveil your “Chiefees”.

And thanks for using “Chiefees” instead of the other popular choice.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

this is still feeling really scary. especially after that luck.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

How many balls can Anderson miss against us this year!! Wow, he makes Delmon look like Wille Mays in the outfield.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

I’m currently in “awaiting moderation” purgatory for some reason.

Steve H says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Bad luck on that one by Span, a few more runs would have been nice.

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Right where you deserve to be, after that little ‘how old is Delmon’ stunt, WJ.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm

He’s 24 baby!!

DrDon says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Chief, I have just nominated your 9:48 for PoD. Loved it.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:50 pm

if keppel lets one more guy on……. he has to get yanked. anybody but keppel.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Dick B. just stated that in his entire life he had never seen an outfield play shallower than KC did against Punto. Gee, Dick, you think maybe it’s because he can’t hit the ball further than 265 feet?

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm

Stuff it, Doc.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm

“whose dugout? Detroit’s?”

Yeah, WJ.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 pm

yes……. keppel gone

DrDon says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Why, WJ. I thought that was funny.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Come on Mijares, make your critics eat their words!!!

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Thanks romer. I have been ESPN-less for over a year now.

Justin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 pm

WHY can’t we just put these guys away?

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 pm

I don’t know about Detroit’s dugout being ‘tight,’ but it’s getting a bit uncomfortable on my couch right now.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 pm

I was looking forward to a relaxing evening after inning 1. Wasn’t even going to come on here. And now I am very much not happy.

Justin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 pm

WTF

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 pm

i just threw up

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Twins are providing WAY too much drama.

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Mijares is 2 pitches away from brining the tying run to the plate.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Oh my goodness

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 pm

This Ump is all over the place.

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:57 pm

AWESOME outside corner pitch.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Mijares is 1 pitch from getting out of the inning.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:58 pm

Manship leaves the game with an 8-run lead and we’re going to end up using at least FIVE relievers tonight??

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Now is the time to bring in Nathan for that 1+ inning save.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Get that pitch outside Jose!

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Dick needs to shut up

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm

if you EVER get a scoreless inning out of keppel you Have to get him out of there and thanks the forces that you got what you got. to ask more is just…….. well.. just look what happened… again.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm

I don’t feel so good.

Justin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm

WTF is up with us not being able to hold onto 10 run leads.

Come on guys.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm

GameDay has been stuck on a 2-1 count to Maier for the last two minutes.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm

jim kaat would have turned that into a force out at home.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:01 pm

FLASHBACK ALERT!!!!!!!!!.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Guerrier???? Seriously? Where’s Nathan?

little miss sarcasm says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm

WTH happened? I went to lunch it was 10-2….

Original Kevin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm

this is like blowing the ten run lead at Oakland all over again. Next year we will be talking about how Detroit got swept in the three games against the Sox, and the Twins would have won the division had they not blown that ten run lead against KC.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm

i dont believe what i am watching….im starting to get ill….this is nuts….

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 pm

If they tie this game……

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Get Butler!

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Okay, Laudner and Gaetti are in the booth for good luck.

And I just read the update above, Duensing is available tonight.

:)

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Delmon should have thrown Mijares under an actual bus last night.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

i can hear the tiger fans laughing here in virginia all the way from detroit.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I like Gardy. I’m in the camp that believes he’s one of the better managers in the MLB but not putting Nathan in here is seriously a HUGE mistake. The season is on the line and you don’t have your best pitcher on the mound? That’s ridiculous.

Shaun in Chicago says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

My head hurts…

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

The Warrior will get us out of this.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

even a 3 run lead in the 9th with nathan is scary ……

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:04 pm

The only thing this game is missing is Ben popping in with his hatred. I see Kevin made it.

Nick34 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Things have got very interesting and..where are my Tums.

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

This is hillarious, we might blow two ten run leads against two of the worst teams in the majors. This loss if it comes just may get Gardy fired after all!

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Guerrier didn’t throw a single pitch in the strike zone. Butler did us a favor by being too overactive.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 pm

righty on lefty

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Big out there. C’mon Matt. One more.

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

That a boy Matty!

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Would any of you like to repeat what a mistake is was to put in Guerrier? Nathan who?

Nick34 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Everybody can exhale!!!

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

WHEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Hallelujah.

Justin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Thank you Matt Guerrier

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:06 pm

score three now and maybe we can breathe again in the top of 9th

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

No Gardy wants too save NATHAN. He is a decent to good manager, a great one? My friends he will never, ever be that.

Original Kevin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

I still say the Royals will tie it up in the ninth

little miss sarcasm says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

okay…. now since the twins are batting I think I can leave the game again without an implosion again right?

Think1Way2 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

*Wipes sweat off forehead & exhales*

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

Ok, ok, who’s heart fluttered when that ball left the bat off Pena?

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:07 pm

tell me how bad do we miss neshek….he used to have 9 pitch innings when he was really on…..3 and gone…..

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Despite the outcome it was still a mistake not to put your best relief pitcher in that situation.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

I don’t see any apologies or “Nevermind, I’m an idiot” messages here for Gardy’s “huge mistake” and his “ridiculous” move there. Anyone? Anyone?

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

The old Nathan would be automatic. I agree with mj1, the current Nathan has lost it and it could be a roller coaster. He will be 37 years old next year and has $24 million owed the next two years on his contract, it might be time to look around if he could bring a starting infielder and pitcher in a swap.

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Boby Keppel should not even reside in the state of Minnesota next year, and do you think Mijares is a bit shaken from yesterdayy, man he’s pitching like someone plucked all his feathers. We better have some hits left for Grenke tomorrow!

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Even Nathan can’t blow a 3-run lead, can he?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

It clearly was not a mistake. A strikeout and routine fly ball. Yep, I hope Gardy makes more mistakes like that all weekend.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Let’s get some runs here!!

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:09 pm

I wish I knew who our best relief pitcher IS right now.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Time for Joe to go yard and make us comfortable again.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

well at least butler should be out of the way in the 9th

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

Mac, so you’re saying that if they had scored on Guerrier - only then would that be considered a mistake? That’s not managing. That’s hindsight.

I don’t see any apologies or “Nevermind, I’m an idiot” messages here for Gardy’s “huge mistake” and his “ridiculous” move there. Anyone? Anyone?

‘Success’ does not equal ‘good decision’ macleod.

If I decide to drive home drunk, and make it safely, does that mean it was a good decision?

Just for the heck of it, maybe Gardy starts Casilla at 2b tomorrow since Punto couldn’t hit Greinke with a shovel.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:11 pm

come on joe…… how about getting 30 before the season is over….

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I am with you all the way Bob, Nathan is hot, he has gotten his last fat contract. Personally from what I have seen from the past couple of years he is no longer dominating and fooling very few people. If the front office looks at this logically, give him up for some talent if we can get it, I am sure there is a National team that would take him off our hands for sure. Hopefully Neshack will be ready of Guerra will be soon coming of age.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Crain does a bad job.

Mahay does a good job.

Keppel does a good job, then a bad job.

Mijares does a bad job, but it looks like a good job in the stats.

Guerrier does a good job.

So mixed results. Gotta think these guys are already into tomorrow.

filthy46 says:

Macleod you are speaking in hindsight for sure, a three run jack and you would have said what? The fact is Nathan does not have the goods to hardly make through one inning let alone 4 outs or more. Two more years at 37 years old? We got fleeced boys and girls.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:15 pm

That’s not managing. That’s hindsight.

just not that 10 extra feet joe had at the beginning of the year….

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Seriously guys? Comparing driving drunk to Matt Guerrier facing two batters; striking out one and getting a fly ball? That’s what you want to go with? Yes, Gardy makes nothing but mistakes because a couple of you thought he should have brought in Nathan. Only, it worked out perfectly. If Gardy decides to start Punto over whoever you like, and Punto goes 3-3 with a walk and an RBI, it’s the right move.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

nathan is still one of the best- but he has this knack of making things scary - his #s are awesome, its just that we were so used to him being 3up 3down….not anymore - he seems to always give up couple hits or that damn long one, but still usually closes it out…getting riskier every day….i would like to see a solid guy behind him next season to take over at anytime….maybe that kid in AAA who i cant think of his name right now..

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Oh Lord, buckle up kids, here comes Joe. He is so due for a 1-2-3 9th like the old days, maybe we’ll get it. These aren’t the Yankees so we should be ok.

Original Kevin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

you guys act like Nathan is lights out. There have been several games where the Twins pitchers gave up no or 1 run in eight innings, only to have Nathan come in and give up a couple or at least make us sweat it out.

jbiowa says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Okay, enough dissension. Time to focus all of our collective energy on 3 MORE OUTS.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:18 pm

Plain and simple. Gardy made a decision to NOT bring in Nathan. It worked. The decision worked. How is that hindsight?

Jordan says:

Nathan has been a bit shaky lately, much to our dismay. But he is still an elite releiver and we are lucky to have him. Close ‘em down here Joe.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:20 pm

mj1- Rob Delany is the guy you are thinking about. Fat Bill was an idiot not to bring the kid up in August or at least in September. He was sensational this year at AA and AAA and at least deserved a look see in September.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

You cannot argue against the fact the Twins needed their best relief pitcher in the 8th inning. If Guerrier is currently the best relief pitcher on the staff then he should be closing out this game and the rest of the games this season. Nathan has been having a tough stretch lately but he’s still the best relief pitcher on the Twins. He should be used in the highest leverage situations.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm

h2oface says:

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Two outs. Here’s where Nathan usually starts to make things interesting.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm

think joe will throw behind his back now?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Nathan has been pitching 3 outs the entire season, but because a couple of you suddenly decided he should get 4 outs, that equals “bad decision” by the Manager? Why don’t you save your brilliance for the Twins front office?

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

It is hindsight, look up the definition please. Besides I hope Joe shuts it down, but let’s face it, be it this year or next year, he will get tatooed in the playoffs by good hitting teams, he just does not have the same arm, period. That kids name is Guerra, the other piece in the Santana deal that is often overlloked, the Mets did not want to part with him, nasty, nasty stuff, and a power arm.

mj1 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

yep, bob thats his name, i too wanted to see him up, as nathan seemed to be struggling, but hopefully next year….

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm

But if you make that same decision every time, it will fail more than it works out.

h2oface says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 pm

1 strike!

Original Kevin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Gardy drives me nuts with his pitcher management, absolutely nuts. But at the end of the day, he has taken this team that lost Slowey, Liriano, Neshek, Morneau, and they are on the brink of winning a divsion, albeit poor division. If Gardy did not have such a cheap ownership and GM behind him, he might really do something.

Jordan says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Great job Joe! Great job Twins!

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Do you have the office for the front office, I would enjoy a sit down with them. First things, drop Perkins, Keppel, Redmond, and Crede, and trade Nahan as he does not warrant 24 million dollars over the next 2 years, we gave him a foolish deal. Next question.

Bob says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:28 pm

Gardy’s glare at Tolbert when he almost mishandled that pop up was priceless.

Some of you really need to look yourselves in the mirror and ask yourself; “Do I want the Twins to win, or do I want Gardy to fail?”

It’s embarrassing that some of you were complaining about a pitching move that worked because “it might have not worked”.

The Twins won. The last two pitching moves secured the victory. And…the Twins won and are one game back. I’m happy, at least until tomorrow when I return to my favorite blog to read Twins “fans” rooting for Gardy to fail.

Daniel1966 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Hey Macleod, Rather than ripping Twins’ bloggers in the Midwest, how about working as a self-proclaimed “SPECIAL AGENT” based in Sacramento for the U.S. Government and not pissing away your work days on these baseball blogs. Just a reminder from a taxpayer!!

We live to see another day! Sure wish we didn’t have to use Guerrier and Nathan but they did the job. I hope KC doesn’t swing the bats tomorrow like they did in the second half of the game tonight. Everything they swung at managed to fall in there for a while. Grienke has never won at the Dome. Hope that streak continues. Blackburn on three days rest could be good for his sinker. It could also be a plus that he had 7 days off before his last start in Detroit.

Macleod says:

hey Dan, thanks for my salary.

Do the Tigers have a guy pitching tomorrow that hasn’t started a game since June?

mickey mental says:

gardy was an idiot for not pulling his starters early and gardy was an idiot for not bringing in nathan in the eighth.

the guy must be doing something right.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

I sure hope Bill Smith can go out and get some decent players that Gardenhire can finally win with. It’s not fair to Gardenhire that he’s had to make do for so long with crappy players. The whole organization needs to think more about what they can do for Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire deserves a World Championship. If the FO doesn’t improve the team we could very well end up losing Gardenhire to another team. Nobody else in baseball could match was Ron Gardenhire has done for this team. Without Gardenhire we’d be a 60 win team, tops. Let’s all pull together and support Gardenhire, he deserves it.

Jordan says:

Gardy for MOY.

Macleod says:

Anyone remember if the Twins have ever been as close as one game back this year?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:49 pm

So, who’s available to replace Gardy as Manager? I’m not up to speed on all the unemployed great MLB Managers out there.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Detoilette is still in control of its destiny — if you can call starting Figaro being in control of your destiny.

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Yes WJ. Tuesday afternoon in-between the double header.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:52 pm

Gardenhire wasn’t picked from a list of great MLB managers to take over from
Tom Kelly. Kelly had never managed before he took over from Ray Miller. Ron Washington, my vote of MOY, had no managerial experience before taking over in Texas. How could any of these guys be decent MLB managers when nobody had ever heard of them before?

Daniel1966 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:52 pm

Hey Macleod, How about earning your salary, Special Agent Man!! Funny, but my brother, a federal agent in the Bay area and also from MN, made a few calls to the FBI, Homeland Security, ATF, Border Patrol, Customs, etal., and couldn’t find an agent from Duluth via Rosemount, MN. mmmmmhmmmm!!

filthy46 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Ease up Macleod, I do not want Gardy to fail, I merely think he is okay for the job. Could we have better, yes we could.

B-Good says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Walter Johnson-

I hope you weren’t being cynical in that post because it is actually quite accurate. Not a lot of managers could keep this team in contention given the lack of talent on the roster. I think Gardy has done a great job with the players he was given.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Easy Dan. It’s just a blog about peoples opinions. I can pretty much be whatever I want here. I actually don’t even remember you or talking to you…ever. But I appreciate your interest in my life. LOL.

BTW, there are dozens of federal agencies that employ Office of Inspector General Federal Agents for countless numbers of Federal Departments. Not that I work for those either. Maybe your brother should stop making phone calls and do the work the taxpayers pay him to do.

Original Kevin says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:57 pm

I do remember being very little, 1967, the Twins went into Boston the last weekend of the season, just needing to win one game. They lost the last two, and Red Sox won the penant,

USAFChief says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Is it possible that some people question moves by the manager BECAUSE they want the team they support to end up winning?

The tying run is at the plate in the 8th inning of a game that has to be won. HAS TO be won.

I want my best reliever getting those two outs.

It wasn’t a good decision. That doesn’t mean anybody is more happy than me that it worked out…but I still hope Gardy makes a better decision next time he’s in a similar spot.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Freddy Garcia had 6 great starts until the last one against Detoilette.

He’ll make the adjustment.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I wasn’t proclaiming Gardy is a genius or manager of the year. I was serious when I said who’s available. A lot of people want him replaced. I was wondering if that was just a statement in frustration or if there literally is people out there that could.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:00 pm

B-Good,

It just seems that a few people are more concerned with Gardenhire than the team.

DrDon says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Chief…If it worked out, it was a good decision.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:02 pm

I’ve just never heard of anybody using “hindsight” in a situation that worked out well.

“In hindsight, instead of Gardy pitching Guerrier and having him get those two batters out, I wish he had pitched Nathan and gotten those two batters out.”

I was just giving people crap that they should “apologize” to Gardy since the decision worked.

Daniel1966 says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:02 pm

So what are you, Special Agent Man? That is, besides a fictional creation of another blogger.

romer says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Gardy just noted OC has a hamstring issue.

Harris at 3rd, Punto at SS?

Nah.

“Orlando Cabrera is 1-for-11 against DiNardo.”

He actually went 3 for 5 tonight (except the official scorer screwed him). He’s hot, keep him in.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:04 pm

The time to replace Gardenhire was back in May or June when the Twins got off to a slow start for the fourth or fifth consecutive season. Mainly as a means of shaking up a team that badly needed a shakin’.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:05 pm

What do you mean Dan? What am I? I’m a Minnesota Twins fan. I like the Vikings too.

Not really sure why you would care. Did we have some friendly bantor in the past that I don’t remember? Perhaps it was more important to you.

It kind of sounds like you are stalking me. Would you like my address?

Steve H says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:08 pm

It only matters since you said it matters by proclaiming yourself as a U.S. Federal Agent. By the way, I’m just a little guy who owns a business that employs people and pays taxes (as I declared before with my initial interrogatory on this blog two years ago) who was able to semi-retire at age 45 and learn to enjoy the opinions of “real” people and not Trolls over the last sixteen plus years. That said, Special Agent for whom?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Sounds like you’re very successful Dan. Good for you. BTW; we’re all just little guys trying to pay taxes and support our families, and maybe, enjoy a little baseball along the way.

You have been completely too personal in attempting to delve into my life, for what reasons, I could not fathom. Feel free to focus on your own life, as will I. Whether I’m a Federal Agent or a Garbage Man, I’m just doing my thing like you are.

I honestly don’t recollect having a conversation with you two years ago.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Walter Johnson says:

To be exact, it has been two years, three months and five days since you first posted under the name “Macleod”. And, no, nobody is following you.

Macleod says:

I know federal agents! I respect federal agents for the work they do every day on our behalf! And, you sir, are a phoney! People who portray themselves as such, while wasting work days on these blogs, only besmirch the hard work of many of our finest who are diligently performing their duties.

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 pm

LOL WJ. I knew it! It’s not paranoia if they’re really after you.

Actually, the name “Macleod” was already on my computer when I bought it. I wonder what it means?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Looks like somebody has been logging my hours. Of course, I heard a rumor that people with those jobs are on duty 24/7, hence, an hour during the day, or night, would still mean they are working 23 hours that day.

Trust me Dan, I’ve learned through life that the more you think you know the less you really do know.

Walter Johnson says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm

Daniel,

Are you one of those small business owners that cheats on his taxes and pays illegal immigrants under the table to get around the minimum wage laws?

Macleod says:

October 2nd, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Dan respects federal agents, but not garbage men I guess. I respect anybody that works for a living. Cops, Firemen, McDonalds workers, garbage men, secretaries. They’re all just trying to support their family.

Macleod says:

Hey WJ, what do you suppose I said to Daniel two years ago that would have him attacking me personally tonight? I mean, we all yell and “insult” each other about baseball, but he seems to have taking a disliking to my way of life.

I honestly don’t really know anybody on here, and nobody really knows me. Nothing wrong with that. But, hey, he’s doing investigations on me. Weird.

Daniel1966 says:

Neurosis befits some. That said, good win for the Twins and good luck tomorrow. As a relocated former Twins season ticket holder for many years, it would truly be enjoyable to be with “real” (meaning existing) Twins fans for the Saturday’s and Sunday’s conclusion! The Tigers appear to be toast and can be caught and passed. Go Twins!

He’s busy calling his brother to ask if he knows of a “Macleod” that is a federal agent. Um, that really isn’t my name. Am I being phoney for using a moniker of a fake name?

I wonder if the FBI in the Bay Area would appreciate that his brother is trying to track a fake name on a baseball blog out of Minnesota? Don’t federal agents have certain rules they have to follow, like searching for people should pertain to a real investigation? That boys going to get his brother in trouble.

Gardy can go if the Twins win a pennant. I’ll still watch without him.

I’m real Dan. And I’m a real Twins fan. You know, your offense of me is a little strong considering we’re just monikers on a baseball blog. I assure you, I have never impersonated a Federal Agent. Unless I was under cover.

Dan was all over me. I don’t even know who he is.

But, back to baseball. Those numbers are just sick. And, nothing wrong with that average.

BTW; new post up by LaVelle.
