First pitch update. Ticket update. Homer Hanky update. Sights and sounds update

We’ve heard that Game Three of the ALDS is tentatively scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Dome. That time could be made official during tonight’s game.

In two-and-a-half hours following Tuesday’s dramatic win, the Twins sold 46,000 tickets for both Game Three and Game Four.  The Twins were getting close to shutting off sales so they can determine how many tickets will be returned by season ticket holders.

Homer Hankies are on sale now at every Twins Pro Shop as well as the ticket window at the Dome. Cost: $2.00.

Reggie Jackson spent several minutes talking with Twins great Tony Oliva as photographers zeroed in. Mr. October then chatted up Joe Mauer, who then called Justin Morneau over to join the conversation. Good move by the Twins to bring Oliva on the trip and have him in uniform on the field.

The umpiring crew strolled across the front of the Twins dugout on their way to their dressing area. St. Paul’s own Tim Tschida is the crew chief and will work behind the plate tonight. He spotted Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson, walked over and shook hands with them as photographers clicked away. Wonder how that will go over…

I noticed the link the Strib had to the NY Times article/blog that predicted the Yankees would sweep the series in 3 games.

Some very insightful analysis done by the Times’ writer. For example, did you know…

“Switching Sides: When the Twins lost the slugger Justin Morneau to a stress fracture of the lower back in mid-September, they shifted Michael Cuddyer from third base to first and installed Matt Tolbert at third base. Tolbert, a onetime 16th-round pick then batting .191, hit .306 through Sunday to help the Twins force a one-game playoff.”

What can you expect from NY writers, I suppose? Not like bothering to check facts has ever been important in that media market.

I grew up with Tschida. A great man and a fan of the Twins. Give us the calls, Tim!

Will the Home Hankies for this weekend be different from last night’s?

I know what you’re saying, I’ve read a couple articles about this series today and it’s almost like you can feel how pretentious some of these writers are. I hope the Yanks get mowed down, if not by the Twins, hopefully by the Angels.

I hope the Twins bunt like crazy against Sabathia. I want to see him try to field his position.

TT - Yest they will be different, they had old ones given out the past few games.

LaVelle - Thanks for the time update, I work until six so that sounds excellent.

I’m absolutely loving the national media showing the Twins no respect. And Vegas, too (have you seen the line on today’s game?!). Fine, lay it on thick. I don’t care. What I do care about is grit, and tenacity, and perseverance. The Twins have shown all of that in the past 20+ games, and you know, that Metrodome Magic just might have stowed away on their overnight flight to NYC.

I want this win so badly tonight.

I cannot stand CC Fatslobbia. He is my least favorite player in all of baseball. If you people think I was hard on Nick Punto for being the worst player in baseball maybe ever… my dislike of Fatslobbia makes that seem like the love that Gardy has for Punto.

Please please please just someone hit a line drive off of Slobbathia so I can watch the grounds crew have to use the infield tarp to carry him off the field.

Anyone who ever said the pitcher is the best athlete on the field really has to come up with some explanations for the one I simply refer to as “The Fat Man.”

Yeah, Sunday they were ones from 2006. Yesterday they seemed new to me with just “Championship Drive” on them.

I’m not sure which argument to go with:

The rich owners (I understand that the Pohlad group indeed is very wealthy) of the Twins need to relax their tight grip on the purse and spend more to finish fielding a quality team.

OR

spending caps on player salaries. It is tiring to see many of the same big $$$$ teams regularly, for the most part, in the post season.

OR

Put NYY and Boston Sox in a league of their own. They can endlessly play each other in the Big buck league.

Sincerely, Barney

I’ll have one by tomorrow to find out for sure what these are.

Does anyone know if the new Homer Hankies are available on line. I live up north, and cannot get to the the Dome or a Pro Shop to get any.

The homer hankies that they are using are the ones that they made for 2008 and then didn’t use when the team lost to the White Sox in the tiebreaker game. You can tell because the copyright on them is 2008.

I understand why Twins fans hate the powerhouse AL East. But the Red Sox were the FOURTH largest payroll behind the Yankees, Mets, Cubs — the Red Sox spent almost half what the Yanks spent this year (and yes, it was double what the Twins spent). And there are a few teams that bunch around the Red Sox in terms of money.

I’m a biased Red Sox fan, but in general, sports pundits who don’t hate Boston for one reason or another generally acknowledge that the Red Sox do spend money, but also spend it wisely. They are both generous (though nowhere near the level of the Yanks –while being nowhere as cheap as the Pohldads — who gladly take fan money and taxpaper money for their stadium while scrimping on payroll) AND smart.

That said: I think there should be a salary cap. As a Red Sox fan, I’d love to compete with the Yankees (and the other top spenders) when they can’t rely simply on money to field a good team.

Here are the rankings this year in terms of payroll — you can see that the Tigers, Phillies, Mariners, Angels, Dodgers, etc. are all not very far behind the Red Sox in 2009 in terms of payroll:

Team 2008 payroll 2009 payroll
Yankees $209,081,577 $201,449,189
Mets $137,793,376 $149,373,987
Cubs $118,345,833 $134,809,000
Red Sox $133,390,035 $121,745,999
Tigers $137,685,196 $115,085,145
Angels $119,216,333 $113,709,000
Phillies $98,269,880 $113,004,046
Astros $88,930,414 $102,996,414
Dodgers $118,588,536 $100,414,592
Mariners $117,666,482 $98,904,166
Braves $102,365,683 $96,726,166
White Sox $121,189,332 $96,068,500
Giants $76,594,500 $82,616,450

Yes - as jrjr444 said, the Homer Hankies are old. My dad just went and bought 5 of them from the Ticket Office only to find out they’re the same one my husband & I got for free at the game on Tuesday.

Very irritating, but I guess at least it’s only $10 which in the whole scope of money I spend on the Twins each year isn’t a lot.

GO TWINS!!

Why can’t the batting coach tell Mauer to swing at the first pitch ?every pitcher everywhere knows he will not swing at the first pitch. So what’s the dif he swings and misses - he does not swing.either way the first pitch is strike. If he swings he might by luck hit.
