Get with the program

One of the first steps of working with the architect is to fill out what is called the “Program” sounds a bit scary but it’s not. It’s the basic outline of how you see yourself living and using the space, your wants, needs wishes and dreams. We printed out two sets of this and Stacy and I look it into separate rooms to fill it out without the influence of each other. Sort of our own version of a magazine couples quiz “50 question to tell if he’s right for your?” Any how it was a great way to see how in-tune we were with one another. Let’s just say we didn’t need to do any adding or subtracting before we sent it along to Michael. Here’s the jist of it.

Interior
1. Distinct separation of professional, public and private places
2. Public spaces should flow form one room to the next
3. Private spaces should be modest in size with areas for gathering
4. Professional space needs to be private from main living areas and able to accommodate two work spaces.
Exterior
1. Modern or post-modern in influence
2. Capitalize on southern exposure
3. Open to a variety of materials including concrete metal and wood
4. blur lines between interior and exterior spaces
Miscellaneous
1.Consideration of green and alternative materials
2. Rain water collection system
3. alternative heating and cooling options including solar and geo-thermal
4. Lots of transmitted light
5. Introduction of unique and costs saving materials to achieve a great presence and minimize impact on the environment
6. Possible green rooftop for later consideration

Hi Jason,
I would love to know more about any rainwater collection plans that made it into your design. Got any good web sites to point me to? Thanks!

A good friend of mine who is big into design suggested to my wife and me a wonderful idea that has helped up in focusing our ideas into our home here in Omaha. That suggestion was to clip from whatever source (magazine, internet, whatever) pictures of things we like. could be colors, could be forms, light fixtures, etc. Over time these ideas can coalesce into something that one can incorporate into their home. This has worked for us in our current home in our kitchen reclamations and as we embark on implementation of an ambitious landscape design this year, it helped us to prioritize the must haves and the nice to haves and the only if we have the money. Food for thought.

Hey Jeff,
This is the exact process we went through for about the past 9 months. Dwell and MetHome have been great resources as well based on the Moco style we are into I’ve found some great online resources including just about every architectural firm in Australia. My favorite resource however is a book called 25 houses under 3000 square feet by James Grayson Trulove. he has two other books 25 under 2000 and 25 under 1500. They’re nice too but not as in-tune with what we are going for.
