Architects Note: Construction Documents

During all parts of the process, the Design Team constantly revisits the goals indicated during the initial meetings and assesses their evolution as the design becomes more refined. The result is then turned into construction documents. Everything from floor joists to paint colors is typically indicated. This literally is the nuts and bolts of our service but is also probably the most critical. The bulk of the decisions have been made and now its time to ‘make it work’. Everything it will take to assemble this building is described and drawn. The drawings are very detailed and much more involved then you would typically see with a set of stock building plans. This is a custom home and there is more thought put into each component and detail. This does not necessarily mean that a custom home is more expensive. Architects help look for ways to be efficient. This may include things such as maximizing the use of space to being creative with standard building components. The contractors will then take these construction documents to create a bid and ultimately build the home.

I firmly believe that it takes a collaborative effort to have a successful project. The contractor being a key player. Inevitably, the contractor will make decisions in the field everyday that will affect the final product and it is critical that they understand the design intent. We were fortunate that a contractor was on board from the start. Corey with Benedict and Associates has brought an enthusiasm and expertise that enhanced the design ideas. It doesn’t hurt that he is a nice guy as well!
