This brite anchored the bottom of page one on the same day the Tribune reported that Cmdr. Turner Caldwell, a Navy war hero, had established a world speed record by flying an experimental Douglas Skystreak at more than 640 mph over what is now Edwards Air Force Base in California. But fame — like pie crust — is fleeting: A Marine pilot, Maj. Marion Carl, broke that record five days later at the same location.

PIE-LOVING BARBER IN SUIT

A barber’s excessive love for pie crust was responsible for his being named defendant in a $13,000 alienation of affections suit filed in Hennepin county district court Wednesday.

The barber, William DeNoonan, 3125 Lyndale avenue N., was named in the suit, brought by Rudolph H. Schweitzer, 3129 Gray place, as having alienated the affections of Schweitzer’s wife, Laura.

Mrs. Schweitzer, a chef in a cafe, prepared pies for DeNoonan, a frequent patron there.

“The defendant just loved crust, and these pies had lots of it,” the complaint charges. DeNoonan also is called a “streamline Romeo with a bagful of tonics” in the action.

The Schweitzers were married May 7, 1937, and she has recently started divorce proceedings.

The story above ran without a photo. Instead, how about an image of flour magnate James Ford Bell cutting a pie at the Nicollet Hotel in about 1946? Joining him in the staged shot were Harry Amos Bullis and an unidentified woman in a marvelous hat. (Photo courtesy mnhs.org)
