My Dad was born in July of 1910. He weighed 14 1/2 pounds at birth. Grandma was short, about 5'1". She had all of her three children at home with the help of a neighbor/midwife. I cannot imagine giving birth to a baby of that size in the middle of a hot Minnesota July! The family story was that he was the biggest baby born in Minnesota at the time. It would be interesting to do a little research on that. Grandma didn't have diabetes, so I'm not certain what accounts for Dad's size. He was a lanky 6'2" in adulthood. He had an older sister with a normal birth weight, and a younger brother who showed up at 11 pounds. Yikes.

Sounds like Veronica Schmitz probably had diabetes of some sort (gestational?). Those are some massive babies, even by today's standards.
