Bobby: I think that's Brettallica's point. Boston has had a long time to continue adding trains, much like other larger cities. Minneapolis has just gotten started, but you can already see how it can make things easier. Just ask Seattle, who is finally getting their first line next year - decades late.

Brettallica, it IS NOT EASIER to get around by train in MN. There is only one line N-S line and a soon to be E-W line. How does this help the other 99.9% of the people who don't live or work near those lines?

Funny! I lived in Boston until 1999, and have seen the Globe's equivalent to this article from the same era. What's odd in both cities is how many proposed freeways never got built. I wonder what our traffic problem would be like if it had? In Boston, nearly everyone gets around now by train (affectionately called "The T"). Only recently have Minnesotans discovered how much easier it is to get around a large city by train over cars (which you then have to park somewhere).

As a newly-licensed driver in the mid-'60's, my contemporaries would regale me with accounts of taking their cars "out on 494," where there was "nobody," to test the upper limits of their cars' speed. Try that today!

Hi, Kathleen. Thanks for writing. You should be able to purchase a copy of that photo, which is filed as a black-and-white print in the newsroom library. For details, see:

Is it possible to obtain (purchase?) a copy of the first photo on this page (I-94 under construction in May 1965)? The area shown (just past the Riverside Bridge) is that of our block club, though much changed ... obviously. It would be great to have a photo that would be clear in an 8x10 size. Is this possible? Thanks. Kathleen Sikora
