Lollapalooza bound?
Posted on August 2nd, 2006 – 6:10 PMBy Chris Riemenschneider
Hey rock fans, partiers and/or tortured teens,
Are you headed to this weekend’s Lollapalooza fest in Chicago? We’re hoping to hear from you before you leave town to try to gauge what the Twin Cities/Minnesota/Upper Midwest contingent will be like.
First off, how are you getting there? How and when did you get tickets? Where are you staying when you get there (in case you didn’t already know, there’s not much camping available in downtown Chicago)? Which acts are you most looking forward to seeing? And if you went to last year’s Lolla, what can the rest of us expect?
Check back for our own forecast of the event and reports from the pit. Er, wait… do they actually still have pits anymore at Lollapalooza?

When I bought tickets with a college friend for Lollapalooza in June, I had heard of some of the big acts that will be there (Kanye West, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Raconteurs, the Shins) but didn’t know much about what else I’d be seeing. Since then, we have been trading Lolla-related music. Now I’m more excited for Wolfmother, Of Montreal, and Common than anything else. One thing I really like about this festival is the integration of underground hip-hop and underground alternative/rock music. Kind of like a mix CD of songs played on 89.3 the Current.
We’re staying at the youth hostel two blocks west of Grant Park. I’m flying to Chicago on Friday morning and departing Monday morning, which will make checking in and out of the hostel interesting (check-in at 4 pm, check out at 11 am). As a 19-yr-old student living in Decorah, IA during the year, it will be exciting to be in the big city for the weekend with flocks of other music fans.
My friends and I are driving to Chicago tomorrow morning. We have been waiting since the first day the line-up was announced in March. We are staying with a friend. I am most looking forward to seeing Sonic Youth most of all. Also, The Hold Steady, Common, The New Pornographers, and Built to Spill. I went last year when the headliners were the Pixies and Weezer and it was f-ing awesome!!! The line-up this year isn’t as good as last year, but it’s still pretty stellar.
My friends and I flew in from various parts on Friday morning. We prefer the walk-up ticket approach. Staying at the James Hotel in River North, then moving down to the Congress Hotel on the park for the last day.
I am here to check out Matisyahu, Ween, Wilco, and Death Cab for Cutie. I was hoping for some more Chi-town representation in the form of Rise Against or Alkaline Trio.
