British buzz: Sandi Thom

I guess no one will show up and take a chance on a new act unless they’ve heard the music on the Current. Maybe 50 people made it to the Varsity Thursday to see Sandi Thom, who had a No. 1 hit in the UK this summer and whose album comes out in the States in Sept.
She demonstrated a lovely, Joan Baez-like voice (befitting her folk-pop) and a chatty, likable personality. Accompanied by an acoustic guitarist, hand drummer and her own acoustic guitar (and harmonica), she played tunes from her CD (already a UK bestseller) and did cool covers of Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (I know, everyone’s covering that; the Raconteurs did it at First Ave last week).
Thom explained that she would be turning 25 at midnight and that she’ll always remember that she turned 25 in Minneapolis (”it’s like the nicest place I’ve ever been in my life”). This was her last gig in the States on this tour but she promised to return to Minne in November.
By then, the Current will have stopped playing her and Cities 97 will be playing her and then Minnesota will know who she is — and the place will be packed. Right?

Right. Exact same thing happened with KT Tunstall.
“Crazy” was even covered more recently by “Of Montreal” earlier this week at their gig at First Avenue…
