Westerberg’s cartoon adventure

It’s not exactly as exciting as hearing “Message to the Boys” for the first time a few months ago, but the Sony Pictures website is now showing the trailer for the new animated movie “Open Season,” featuring a soundtrack ofalmost all Paul Westerberg songs. As these things usually go, the trailerdoesn’teven feature the new music (the Clash and Devo are used instead). But it gives you an idea of what Paul’s dealing with here: another formulaic, talking-animals flickthat at leastloosely involves afine Minnesotapastime(deer hunting). Billboard has a little more info on the soundtrack, due Sept. 26 on Lost Highway, here.

As we reported a few months back, Tommy Stinson collaborated withPaul on a couple of the tracks. Pete Yorn also sings one ofPaul’s songs, as doesthe Cake offshootgroup Deathray (not to be confusedwith thebetterband Deathray Davies). It could turn out to be a charming project, but suffice it to say let’s hope an actual Westerberg disc isn’t too far behind.
