First Ave doc needs a second run

Last night’s screening of “First Avenue: Hay Day” at the Riverview Theater to kick off the Sound Unseen Fest resembled the night Tapes ‘N Tapes played the club last month. There were lines around both corners of the theater, and hundreds of people didn’t get in. Which was too bad, because the movie itself was a hoot.

Filmmaker Rick Fuller (half of Harder/Fuller Films) did a great job wrappinga few randomold interviews around more than a few old performance clips — most of them shoddy and shakey, but who cares?Basically everybody who played the club more than twice in the 80s got into the film, from the Jayhawks and Replacements (fun footage of Westerberg water-fighting with the crowd) to Powermad, Coup de Grace, Urban Guerillas and even the ol’F— S– Biscuits. Remember all them?

Anyway, because nobody knew how the movie was going to turn out (or if it was even going to be done in time), no other screenings have been scheduled. Obviously, this needs to be corrected. The crowd on Wednesday was mostly an “insiders” crowd, a point made obvious by the hissing every time ex-owner Allan Fingerhut appeared on screen. Not to sound like thedrama queenswho protested the first screenings of “Woodstock” (the movie), but this is a movie everyone who was there deserves to see. Wherever the money goes — make it a fundraiser for DEMO or Darfur oreven just somebeer taps for the club — another screening is a no-brainer.

Couldn’t agree more. I was one of the hundred or so who didn’t make it in. I would hope with the flick’s obvious local drawing power, they could find a way to schedule another screening. The Sound Unseen rep who cut off the line said he didn’t think they would be able to, though. Maybe this is one of those “by popular demand” instances.

It’d be great if this saw some sort of commercial release - and y’know, tack on that Soul Asylum footage from ‘88 Rick showed last year and whatever else is in “the vaults” on a bonus disc -, but I doubt it.
