Two shows down, one to go.
After 45 minutes at Macy’s, Prince clocked in at two hours, 10 minutes at the Target Center. The concert kicked off on a nostalgia trip with semi-surprise guest Wendy Melvoin (of the Revolution) joining him for “Purple Rain” (usually a closer, not an opener) and “Take Me With U.” From there, Prince shredded his way through the next few songs, playing a Stratocaster with brute force. He then bounced between funky party starters and some tender gems, as you’ll see by the setlist.

I would say that Target Center should have their licsense to host musical events forever stripped. Target Center has the worst acoustics of any similarsized venue period. Prince really did have some great mements. Play that Funky Music was my personal highlight.
As a former Minnesotan living in Los Angeles as a live audio engineer, I was shocked by the terrible acoustics at Target Center. The reverb times are far too high for reproduced music. The use of line arrays instead or horizontal arrays would have also helped.
Target Center and Minneapolis should look at Staples Center in LA which had similar problems which have now been corrected.
Still a fun concert and glad I made the trip to see it.
I was so frustrated by the acoustics. At times we couldn’t even tell what song he was playing, as we couldn’t hear any melody (and obviously no lyrics could be heard either). When it takes you awhile to tell he is playing “Purple Rain,” you know something is really wrong. Prince is an amazing artist, so it is so maddening to feel we waisted this kind of money.
Yes, the acoustics were horrible. We had lower level seats and couldn’t understand a word he was saying. I wish I would have been at the 1st ave or Macy’s concerts instead.
Buy better seats next time, kids. The sound was excellent for a large venue, better than the Musicology shows. Agreed Staples is a better venue, but what can you do…
Highlights were (of course) the set with Wendy, Glamorous Life, the Cars cover…too many.
The acoustics were terrible at the Target Center. We saw Prince 2 years ago at the Xcel and it was fantastic. I was so disappointed I had a hard time hearing such a great artist perform. We heard feedback a few times—it just should not happen with this big of a production.

Sect 237 - Accoustics fine. Occassional missed cues or attention on some mics. Overall, a rockin’ good time. If you didn’t have fun and enjoy the music, don’t know what you were missing. The love for Minnesota came through most of the night, but ever moreso during “Play That Funky Music” with the dancers and guest vocals pulled from the audience on the floor. Prince is TRULY an artist with multiple talents and a flair for performance. The guitar licks and horns were highlights. Of course Shiela E and Wendy were nice additions too. No disappointment here (except the later start…but what else can be expected?!)
Sect 237, Row B - Accoustics fine. Occassional missed cues or attention on some mics. Overall, a rockin’ good time. If you didn’t have fun and enjoy the music, don’t know what show you were watching. The accoustics was terrible but in the tradition of the Target Center which is without a doubt the worst place to hear a concert. I can not wait to see how Target will make Nickelback sound bad. Xcel center “Musicology” was much better but the best place in the Twin Cities for a concert is the Northrup. For a City this large and with Prince as a central musical leader from our midst, we are should be ashamed of our musical venues. Granted a play at the Ordway sounds 100X better than the State or Orpheum. But the Target center proves once again how important it is to build a facility for sound as well as for sports. The new joke on the street will be, “How do you make Prince sound bad? Put him in the Minneapolis Target Center.” He should have known better as well. Never mind the wait to get into the Target Center. Doors did not open until 8:30 pm, concert started at 10 pm in the tradition of Prince but to have every one wait in hot weather or in the sky ways was negligance at the very least. A great performer let down by a poorly designed and managed facility. In the future I will avoid all concerts at the Target Center until they improve their accoustics. I remember the U2 concert there having the same problem - could not understand a word Bono sang. It is the Target center’s major flaw. The only fault of Prince was to hold his concert there.
Most disappointing show I have ever attended. Hands down. BTW- that has nothing to do with the acoustics. Until he played cream, the show seemed like a random, unorganized mess of songs that created no flow or rhythm. Did he put his set list together the night before or what? It seemed like he was giving a half effort. Why is he playing covers? I go to see the artist play his music- not a covers. Had he put that piece of garbage of a show on anywhere but to his hometown crowd, he would have been booed off the stage. It does give me appreciation for artists who take their shows seriously and try to put something out to their crowd that gets them enthused about being there. This crowd was apathetic and they should have been. There was nothing to be excited about. First and last time I will ever see him.
Sec.205 Row B- The trade off of distance and not seeing the show as well must have paid off, as the sound in the back upper level wasn’t bad. Didn’t have problems hearing vocals, definitely heard every high note on the sax solos. Hard to compare to my first Prince show ever, as that show was priceless- 14 years old, Diamonds and Pearls tour, FRONT ROW, at a 30,000+ hall in Germany. Highlights of the Targer Center show for me were ‘Sometimes it Snows in April’. The ‘Guest’ singer on ‘Play that Funky Music’ and when said guest patted the sweat off of Prince’s head- I did bring binoculars. Let’s Go by the Cars (huh? At first I thought perhaps one of the sound guys had slipped in a CD they were playing for house music. Kind of came out of nowhere, but really fun). Awesome that Wendy & Sheila E joined in. Wishes: more stage design and lighting, Seven was extended (or even played in entirety!), in the round stage would have been sweet, ok, I’ll stop there. Feel super lucky to have been part of a historic show. Looking forward to the new Twins stadium so that shows like this can happen outside, and be right in Minneapolis.
The sound was terrible, I could not hear more then 10 words the entire concert. Worst concert ever! I want my money back.
Acoustics aside, a good number of the speakers were blown. Sitting in section 113, not too far from the stage, and it sounded like I turned my old boombox on at full blast — it was so annoying and aggrevating that it detracted from what was for all intents and purposes a great, great fun show. Does anyone know who to contact at Target Center? Do they care?
Yes, the acoustics weren’t very good. Prince does deserve better. He’s notorious for starting his performances late but an hour and a half after the advertised time was a little much. My section seemed like they were asleep most of the time. Loved seeing Wendy and Sheila E. When he played a little snippet of ‘One Nation,’ I though George Clinton was going to step out. That would have been awesome!
Still, I had a great time. Prince is so talented and always puts on a great show. And for those that aren’t keeping track, Prince loves to work covers into his shows. Wake up!
I agree with most everyone’s sentiments here. SEC 207, row P. Music was great, but his commentary was pretty much lost (had to guess at what he might have said). Bad, bad accoustics.
I was actually annoyed by people getting up and wandering in and out constantly. Sit your butts down people and enjoy the show! I’ll be looking forward to more intimate venues from now on.
I thought the Target Center show was great…Bailed out so i could get a main seat at First Avenue and I did! Four hours waiting in a cooker for after show tickets-nearly had first degree burns. An hour waiting in a non-ventilated breezeway
@ the Target Center-Paramedics almost called. Two hours waiting to get into First Avenue-Back started to hurt. 1 1/2 hours waiting for the “Master” to arrive-Could barely stand anymore. Having the man I love and adore recognize me as a constant at his concerts turn and smile at me and feeling comfortable enough to wave at him-Priceless
I thought the show was awesome. I don’t go to shows to hear the exact music that I could hear on an artist’s CD. Prince rocked and the cover songs were great surprises.
I hope the Strib does a story on the “funky music” guest singer. I hope he really was just a guy from the audience and not a pre-planned gag. I thought Prince had a genuine look of surprise when he started singing — and singing well!
Got tix for the First Ave show (and just barely). Waiting for tix was absolutely ridiculous considering how hot it was. Still, I wanted to go because the price was right and I thought it would be a great experience to hear him play at 1st Ave. Waiting was the worst part of the show. After waiting in line for hours just to get the tix, had to wait again to get into 1st Ave. Overall, 1st Ave did an ok job with a last minute, big event like this, however the fact that they didn’t start selling tix until around 3:45 was ridiculous. They did come around with water for the lines at night waiting to get in which was a nice touch. We got good spots once we got in, but the standing around was just getting really old. When he finally did come out it was really exciting to see him in person. The crowd generally behaved - no moshing around the main floor area like at other shows. What I was most upset about was that he did not play any of his popular songs. The closest we got was Controversy. He played slow, sleepy numbers and considering how late it was and how long everyone there had waited, everybody was tired and lacked energy to keep up with his slow songs. The guy in front of me even left. Here is the set list I would have prefered in no particular order: Darly Nikki, Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Get Off, Kiss, Baby I’m a Star, Under the Cherry Moon, P Control, Raspberry Beret… I wish he would have played even one or two of these songs. Overall, we were dissappointed because of the show being cut short (and now that I know it was the Minneapolis Police Dept’s fault I think that either Prince or 1st Ave should offer another show to make up for the fact that we got screwed out of another hour or so worth of concert) and for the lack of hits. However, that being said, it was a great experience to be a part of a small part of musical history and it was really cool to hear him in such an intimate venue. The sound in 1st Ave was great, although I could not understand what he was saying. It was also really cool that Sheila E showed up and played.
The acoustics were horrible. We were in Section 209 Row U. Most of the time we were questioning what Prince was saying and what song was playing. Other than the acoustic problem, Prince did a fine job. We saw Prince at the Xcel a few years ago and that concert had awesome acoustics. We arrived extra early and didn’t appreciate waiting outside for an additional hour from the start time in the hot heat , but from what I understand that is typical of Prince…I still think that he does a great concert and definitely has some talent like no other!!!
3 WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE SHOW:
EAT
A
BOOGER
All you dorks who keep griping about the target center…it’s been there for how long now and yet you say it sucks to see a show. So why do you keep buying tickets there?
Pudstains….
Junior,
Get a life. I got laid after the show. It was a great show!
Love that Prince!
What a night…concert started late of course…waited over an hour in lobby with no water and apparently no restroom. Doors finally opened at about 8:30 (the scheduled start time). We were some of the first people allowed in and immediately went to the T-shirt area. They had 5 guys working this area and none of them seemed to know what they were doing…they chose to serve others waiting in line (most came in after us). Finally it became apparent that they were taking only orders for thise that had cash. I found later that they has one single credit card terminal that they were sharing (not very smart in this “plastic” age). We finally got the T-shirt and started our journey towards section 126 follwing the corridor’s numerical system. Ater walking to section 119 we found a barricade. The girl at the barricade said just go in 119 and they’ll allow you access to 126. We did so and a gentleman looked at our tickets and said you’ll have to walk back around the corridor the other way(so instead of walking about 100 feet to section 126 we had to back track and go 3/4s of the way around the Target center). Just what we needed after the long wait in the lobby and dealing with the T-shirt morons. Once we finally got to the section and sat down the usher announced that instead of using the exit nearest us for the restroom we had to crawl over about 50 people in the row to use a different exit. Anyone sitting in that section either ticked off others in that section by crawling over them or sat there with a full bladder. To make people paying full price for tickets without the luxery of easy access to restrooms is baloney. Hopefully someone some some influence at the Target Center reads this. Oh…as a side note…the music was good. Unfortunately that’s not what I’ll remember about this concert
I had never been to a Prince concert before, and since I really like Prince and love his music, I paid quite dearly to get two seats on the floor, second row. Prince is awesome, and I enjoyed the concert. But I was very disappointed about the acoustics. I could not hear what he was singing much of the time. I would go to his concert again in a heart beat, but in a different venue.

I have been a Prince admirer since I was 12. I am now 36. This was a fabulous concert. Any true Prince fan would agree. I enjoyed the samples that he chose to play from the old to the new. I sang along to every song. I was in my own little Prince world. The show started late because Prince is a perfectionist. I am sure that will be his last concert at that venue however. Enjoyed Sheila E, Wendy and the other performers. My only complaint is Larry Graham. He was allowed too much time and he took up half the time at First Ave. Who really who listens to Larry Graham anyway??? but other than that…I had the time of my life.

Was at the Macy’s show and it totally rocked. I loved every minute of it, all 45 of them. However making us stand in a line an hour plus after doors were to open was annoying. Im also more than a little upset that those of us who shelled out $250 per ticket for Macys got TERRIBLE lower level seats for the Target Center, and weren’t able to get tickets for 1st Avenue because they went onsale the same time Macys doors were supposed to open. Talk about a slap in the face after putting down a lot of dough. Not opening the doors at Target Center was nearly the last straw, luckily I was over by NBA City of whatever that bar in the TC is and they served cold beer. That beer helped with the acoustics problem because at that point I didn’t much care anymore.
The Macy’s show was Ok. The wait was ridiculous and maddening. He should’ve apologized. We don’t go thru what we do and pay what we do to see Sheila E or horn players. We want Prince. Macy’s should’ve had some big fans or something - After waiting in line that long and then standing in the hot room - ugh.
Despite the acoustics, the Target Center gig was so much better. Again, I adore Prince and love his music. Wendy was a nice compliment. But less Sheila E, less horn players, less dancers. We want Prince. But I loved the concert. He puts on such a great show. I like the covers. The dollar-for-dollar value of this concert was so much better than the Police concert a few nights earlier.
Making ticketholders wait outside in the heat for an hour and a half to even get in Target Center is ridiculous and unprofessional. We went to First Ave. to be in a/c and listen to Har Mar Superstar to kill time before the Target Center doors opened.
To Patti:Are you insane??? It’s people like you who upset the true Prince fans. If you just came to hear Purple Rain you should have gotten up and left after it was played. THe man is a musician and part of going to the live show is not know ing what you’ll hear. My advice to you is don’t go anymore and let someone fill your seat that will appreciate it.
Wow, what a lot of complainers here!
Newsflash: Prince starts his concerts late and plays wacky covers. Go enjoy the downtown restaurants and bars, and use the air-conditioned skyway. Why stand on a hot sidewalk or in the lobby waiting for the show to start? That’s just silly.
Concert sounded great if you we wear the earplugs they hand out in Guest Services. Cuts out all the distortions and I could clearly hear every word Prince said.
Musicians were all awesome! Hope he comes back soon!
I agree with Sara…I was in Section 203, Row U, Seat 14, and the sound was great! We even commented on it after the show that it sounded unusually good for the TC. My other friends who were a level down and a couple of sections to the left of us couldn’t hear a thing. Too bad, cuz we rocked out all night long in the nose bleeds!!! It was my first Prince show and I will definitely be coming back for more the next time he plays…no matter what the venue!
It’s like when Pink Floyd played the Metrodome. All of my friends thought I was nuts to go because the Dome truly sucks when it comes to concerts. But I wanted to see Pink Floyd and that was were they were playing, so you go and have fun and make the best of it! You know the sound is going to be bad beforehand, so there is no point in complaining about it afterwards! Same goes for the TC. As long as our favorite artists are going to play there we will just have to make the best out of the evening and know there is a risk of the sound being bad - OR - just stay home and rent a concert DVD!!!
I’m amazed by all the pissy and whiny comments! Sound at ANY arena is bound to be dissapointing, whether the Target Center, Xcel, Met Center or Civic Center. A fantastic concert well paced and staged for the big arena. Great performance and adequate sound. The concert highlight of the year thus far!
I’m actually from Dallas and was visiting family when my dad surprised me with tickets to see Prince. I am a huge fan of Prince even though I’m only 17 (haha) and I was really excited. Waiting in the lobby area of the arena sucked because there was no air and the staff was being gay but i absolutely loved the concert and i think it helped that we had crappy high seats (sorry dad haha) because the sound was that much better but we did have a great view and I loved every minute of it. Although I do wish I’d have gone to 1st avenue..but obviously I’m not old enough and I had to catch a flight literally right after we left……..Awesome job though by Prince and if he ever goes back on tour, I definitely want tickets!! xoxo

Wow, lot’s of complaining. I’ll agree with some of the other posters and say that when you go to a concert, you are not going to be able to pick the set-list, so relax and enjoy the songs that are selected by the musician you are there to see. An artist like Prince is not just going to play his hits, he’s going to take some chances. I thought it was a fantastic show.
Also, if you know anything about target center you should know that the sound is not great, and if you thought the ticket price was going to ensure crystal clear sound, then you are a bit naive.
A friend and I flew out for the shows from Boston and ended up seeing all 3 shows on 7-7-07 and all three were GREAT!!! I have been a huge Prince fan for 25 years + and he was in great form! His shows and interactions with his fans has become more intimate and friendly as time has gone on and I loved every minute of it! Yes, the acoustics were bad at the Target Center, I’ll give you that, but Prince was perfect, as usual. Macy’s started an our late for reasons unknown, but was well worth it. This undoubtedly caused the delay at the Target Center, but he was so pumped it was again worth the wait. First Ave was then late due to the Target Center, but c’mon guys, three shows in 12 hours is quite a schedule to keep and he did it all for the love of his fans, so give the guy a break here. Macy’s gave out wristbands Saturday morning to the first 215 people in line so we got to go in first (even though they let several of their business associates and other VIPs in before us). They were extremely organized. The Target Center was apologetic for the delay, but there was nothing to be done about it. I did not have tickets to First Ave, as I was at Macy’s when they went on sale, but just before Prince took the stage his “people” released a bunch of tickets to those of us that had hung around outside after the Target Center performance. It was very much appreciated and seeing Prince at Frist Avenue was a historic priviledge. I spoke to the band members for a bit after the show and learned that a neighbor had complained to the police about the noise. Prince’s crew tried to get permission to finsihed the show as Prince did not want to leave us short, but the police were adamant. The trade-off was that Prince himself came out to tell us that he really loved us, but had to respect the authorities. He also promised he would be back. This personal explanation by Prince would not normally happen. It was evident he was sorry that he could not stay and I, for one, appreciated his genuine and personal touch. He is amazing and I would never hesitate for a second to see him play anywhere. He is a musical genious - poor acoustics, police interference, late starts - none of it matters. His true fans know that. As for waiting in line all day and/or all night - that’s the way it is. If you’ve ever done this B4, U know that and if U don’t like, no one is forcing U 2 do it. Prince’s true fans are friendly, wonderful people. We have a loving and peaceful community and meeting everyone for shows like this is the best part of all. Thanks 2 all of u that were a part of the fam. It was a blast, wasn’t it?

Patti - You must be blind and deaf. Maybe you should stick to going to a Wiggles show - that is about your speed. Prince is over your head.
Thanks Maureen for expressing my thoughts. I can’t understand what all the complaining is about. We waited in line all day for First Ave tickets, after coming downtown twice - once, seeing the line, giving up, going home, and then a “What? Are we crazy? I WANNA SEE PRINCE!” driving back downtown a second time, parking, and waiting with the rest of the crazies in the heat - and I loved every minute of it. It was all part of the experience. Yes, it was hot, but Prince didn’t make the weather. I have never seen him play, as I never go to shows at big stadiums (sound issues, lack of intimacy, etc., always leave so much to be desired) - but man, after that set at First Ave, I have a hard time thinking I’ll ever miss him again. The energy that man has when he enters a room is palpable. It’s incredible. He’s like a drug. I have never, ever been so excited to see a show in my life! I was literally trembling with excitement when we finally got a ticket in our hands, then all night at work (waiting on Prince-goers), and when this diminutive, shadowy, beautiful creature walked on stage. He is something not of this earth. He has more charisma in his little pinky than most entire families…more sweet funk and smoothness…does the man ever do anything that isn’t cool? And to think…he grew up just a few blocks from me. The fact that tickets were available to anyone who was willing to stand in line, and for such a nominal fee…it’s just unheard of anymore, and it probably will never happen again, at least not like that. When is the last time you could, nay, HAD to stand in a real, physical queue to buy a single, non-transferable ticket, and they weren’t all somehow mysteriously sold out because of some unpublicized presale or VIP list or whatever? What a rare gift. I felt like I had won the lottery when they came around with the count and said that we were going to get tickets. I about wet myself. That was perhaps the most amazing part. There’s people spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars to get a ticket, when I had merely to roll out of bed at noon on Saturday, meander a few blocks downtown, and get in line before going to work that night. I feel like the luckiest person on the planet. And the show he put on - though it was unexpectedly cut short by the police/city, whatever - was just unbelievable. How could I possibly complain about what I got, when what I saw was more than I ever imagined seeing on Saturday morning (sic). I felt my own brilliance increase just by being in the same room with him. I have nothing but joyful, euphoric recall about being part of such an incredibly cosmic event in Minneapolis, music, and world history as the Day Prince Returned 2 First Ave, 7-7-7. Simply magic. Thank you to all the people who made it happen, the staff at First Ave (as always) and special thanks most of all to the Purple Genius himself. I love you Prince!!!
