You can tell how influential Detroit hip-hop pioneers inSlum Village were by the other rappers slated to perform withthem Wednesday at Trocaderos: Slug, I Self Devine, Truthmaze, Muja Messiah, Maria Isa, the Leroy Smokes guys, Slim of G.O.B. and probably lots more.
Of course, the group’sfamous formerDJ/producer, J-Dilla, is no longer with us. Buthis MC partners T3 and Baatin had successfully carried on without him before his death by releasing the cult-loved 2004 CD “Detroit Deli.” The duo will be paying tribute to J along with their Twin Citiesadmirers at the show. (10 p.m. Wed.,107 3rd Av. N., Mpls. $15 advance, $20 at door. Tickets are at www.indietickets.com or Fifth Element.)
Slum Village will be back in town on Aug. 25outside the Metrodome with the Rock the Bells tour, featuring the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Talib Kweli, MF Doom and more. Wow, and I thought the Paid Dues shows were the biggest hip-hop events of the year. Ticket info for that one hasn’t been announced.
