Another great Day of Music

Here are some absolutely mediocre photos from yesterday’s absolutelytantalizing Macy’s Day of Music at Orchestra Hall, which is actually wrapping up right about now (with its kids’ programming).

Seeing Charlie Parr and his washboard player Mikkel Beckman perform inside Orchestra Hall (they literally opened for the orchestra!) was a genuine trip. At one point,Charlie was telling a story about getting a flat tire out at his cousin’s llama farm and meeting a guy carrying a dead weasel and a giant pistol, and I thought, “I bet that’s another first here in Orchestra Hall.” Little Man never looked littler or sounded bigger than when it rocked the Hall later that night (with the orchestra opening for them).

Outside in Peavey Plaza, Chris Koza and the Hopefuls kept the droves of people charmed for an hour each, most of whom looked like they had never seen the bands or, for that matter, been to the Turf Club or 400 Bar. Maybe cuz of the nice weather, or cuz all the nice words on the event is spreading, it seemed like the best turnoutever for the 24-hour marathon. I have some ideas for next year (mix up the bands/genres more, and don’t let a mediocre and little-known act like Panoramic Blue get the prime slot on the big Peavey stage), but at least it looks good there will be a next year.
