Nickelback … deja vu anyone?

To be honest, I had to start my writing review inside the arena about halfway through Nickelback’s set, so I didn’t keep perfect track of the songs they played. But I am pretty certain that the set list was exactly the same as one I found online from a gig way back in February. That’s the one I’ve posted below.
Animals / Woke Up This Morning / Because of You / Far Away / Saturday’s Alright for Fighting (Elton John) / If Everyone Cared / Never Again / Savin’ Me / Someday / Side of a Bullet (Pantera/Dimebag Darrell tribute) / Flat on the Floor / How You Remind Me / Too Bad
Encore: Rockstar / Figured You Out
I’ve seen many bands come around on tour two, three, even four times in one year, and I can’t remember onethat so blatantly repeateditself as Nickelback did on Monday? Are any of you fans disappointed that this show was so much like their one at the Xcel Center? And Nickelback aside, what did you think of Chris Daughtry? Is he destined to be just another “Idol” castaway, or do you think hemight stick?

Why would someone be surprised or disappointed that the concert was the same (or very similar) to the one they had at the X earlier? It’s the same tour, just on a different date.
If both concerts were booked on back-to-back nights, would you go to both and then complain that the second one was the same as the first? I doubt it.
I didn’t get to see the concert at the X. I thought last night’s concert was a blast! Nickelback puts on a great show. I’d love to see them again - even if the playlist was the same. I thought Daughtry and Staind did a nice job also.
I was a little disappointed of the repeat, but what should I have expected? Being the same tour and all? It was still entertaining.
I think Daughtry has staying power. It puts out what the masses want to hear. He did sound like he held back and a couple songs, especially What I Want.
Overall, I enjoyed the show.
I have seen many bands multiple times on the same tour and even on multiple nights in a row and it is not uncommon for bands to at least rearrange a set list or substitute in a few different songs.
Personally I think it makes it seem like a band is just punching the clock if it’s the same night in and night out.
I see your point.
What is your opinion of Daughtry staying power?
I think Daughtry will definitely stick around. I haven’t bought his CD yet, but I really liked what I heard last night and I love the two songs that have been released on the radio so far. He’s been kicking butt on record sales, and both of his videos have done well on the VH1 countdown.
Chris, loved your concert review in today’s paper. Particularly the opening line. I’m afraid of quilt-ees.
I’ve reviewed Nickelback a few times myself for the QCT. The band travels through Davenport, Iowa on just about every tour.
I agree, the show doesn’t change. And it is nothing like the rock concerts I had to sneak out to attend. I’d consider it a pop show too. But I do love the music of Nickelback. I’m not a Daughtry fan at all.
I guess at 33, I still prefer live rock shows to be hard core. I can assure you this same crowd will not be present at the Slayer/Manson show. Call me if you need a date!
Great work on the review. I, like some of the people around me at the concert last night, saw Nickelback’s last show at the Xcel Energy Center, and was disappointed that there seemed to be no real change over the months. I guess that could be expected when you’re “getting wasted every night” or trying to get rid of “this killer hang-over” all the time. That said, I did find it entertaining. As far as Daughtry, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they’ll stick around. Going triple platinum on your first album is an achievement for anyone, especially an American Idol contestant. Remember Taylor Hicks? While he’s out doing morning shows, Daughtry is out opening for actual bands and performing in front of actual fans. Final word, Daughtry is legit.
I saw them at the X too last fall, for the first time. Last night was a nearly exact repeat, but I didn’t care I love them anyway. I will see them whenever they come to town. I was about 3 people away from the front of the “T” stage part. It’s a great atmosphere down there, but really with the people pushing…if you want to get close up, GET THERE EARLY! We were in line at 4:00 and for that reason, we got up close.
Nickelback is a horrible band. Bland, lame, uninspired songs. Terrible guitar playing and the singer, he could be one of the worst I’ve ever heard–he couldn’t sing a note if his life depended on it. Terrible singing and country-music style vocal melodies, if you can call them that.
The fact that Nickelback can sell out is testament to the woeful state of the music industry these days.
I
am drivin’ black-on-blaaaaack
just got my license baaaaack
blah blah blah blah horrible crap.
Steve-O, if you don’t like Nickelback, don’t go see them in concert. They do sell out, so they obviously have an appeal to an audience that you don’t fit into. I thought they were fabulous!
Nickelback was a disappointment. This is the first concert I have been to in a long time where I walked out liking the band less than when I walked in. Their stage banter and antics are formulaic at best. The pyrotechnics were awful. I was hoping to go to a rock show, not a terrorist attack. Overall, they just are not that creative, and their show reflected that.
I thought the concert was all right. Not the best I’ve ever attended, but not the worst, either. I didn’t catch the Xcel show, so it wasn’t a repeat for me.
I thought Chris Daughtry did a really good job, but the music was turned up so loud that we could barely hear his voice sometimes. I know rock concerts are supposed to be loud, but not PAINFULLY loud.
Chris definitely has staying power.
Nickelback, Daughtry and now even Staind are not bands. They are musical puppets controlled by the record industry to get you to part with your hard earned dough.
I saw the show at the X in February only because I had free tickets. Very predicatble, bland and boring. They along with every other band that was with them appeal to women from adolescents to 30 something soccer moms. Which is fine I guess they need their mucical fix too. However, I would personally rather see a new original act at 1st ave or at Triple rock than to see a shiny, packaged, hook rock band. I think you could compare Nickelback to Menudo. They are there for the same reason, to make someone else money.
I’m not even a Prince fan, but why do you think that little guy is still around? He takes risks! That is one thing you will not see any of these so called pop rock bands do, therefore they will not be around much longer. 50 years from now do you think you can compare Nickelback with a Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC? I think not!
I thought the concert was great. It is entertainment. If you don’t like the entertainers, don’t go to the concert and don’t whine about it. I wore earplugs and had no problems understanding any of the voices.
Oops my mistake! These bands appeal to women, therefore it is pointless for me to disagree because a man will never win an arguement with a woman.
By the way, You go Steve-O! Even a baboon can learn to play guitar riffs in Drop D. Oh Chad Kroeger you are such a wonderful guitarist! I do think that the way Mr. Kroeger grows his hair out he is just hiding his receeding hairline.
Why would you go to a concert if you know you don’t like the artists?!? And, no, we won’t be going to the Slayer/Manson show because I know I don’t like them so I wouldn’t be stupid enough to buy a ticket!!
I also wore earplugs, but I still couldn’t understand the singers at times (although I know the lyrics anyway). Maybe it depends on where you sit in the arena. We were on the end of the first level (facing the stage) about halfway up.
Chad K., we’re reviewing the CONCERT, not the recording industry. If you didn’t attend the concert, keep your opinions about the artists to yourself.
I had trouble understanding Daughtry at times, but none of the other bands. I thought the concert was fantastic. I didn’t find the pyrotechnics lame or bland at all, or the bands for that matter. Obviously since I bought tickets, however, I actually like the bands that played. I didn’t see the concert at the X but if they came around again I’d go see them. It was an exciting atmosphere to be in and the people around me obviously enjoyed themselves.
I loved the concert last night, well worth
my time and money for 3 great bands and over 3 hours of great music!
I was disappointed in the sound at times, the Target Center has been known for horrible sound, the music for Daughtry and Staind was so loud, you could hardly hear the vocal parts. Half way thru the Staind set it did get better.
Did anyone go to Drink for the after party?
I thought it was a great concert! I wasnt dissapointed and I feel as though I got my moneys worth. I was on the floor and the atmosphere down there was insane. I had a great time. First time I have to a concert in like 10 years though.

I was super pumped since i got my tickets to see one of my favorite bands (Nickelback) in concert. Last night was a total blow. Chad what-ever-his-name-is is a lame wannabe. I thought he would be totally different than he was. They need to stop talking about sex and drinking the whole time because there were alot of younger people there. Nickelback was good at the whole playing part, but not so much on the crowd pleasement. Also, Nickelback talked about as much as they played. I am surprised it didn’t let out at 2AM with how much he was talking.
Daughtry and Staind were much much much better. Chris Daughtry s really funny.
The Bad Boys Of Rock tour rocked much much much harder last friday night. I just wish that the Startrib had covered that and had a setlist for that too.
I saw daughtry in Minot,Nd at the state fair on SAT Night. I was impressed. I took the wife she loves him and his looks
But he does put on a good show and really rocked the house.
If I was into Nickelback (not. at all. AT ALL), I’d be mad if they didn’t bother switching up the setlist. That’s just plain lazy. I’ve seen tons of bands multiple nights on the same tour (even two nights in a row), and almost all of them had the sense to mix things up. Nickelback’s got enough material to play two very different sets, and not just “punch the clock”. All the haters are saying Nickelback can’t play, that they’re deriviative and can’t rock. Why not prove us wrong?

I had never seen any of the bands from last night’s show in concert before. Enjoyed Daughtry’s music far more than Staind. Chris was “a little pitchy” as AI’s Randy Jackson would say, in several songs but again, his music/style was better than Staind. I agree with Chris’ comment in the review article- they were kind of an odd ‘fit’ into the lineup as they are rather “dark”. I thought Nickelback was great and I enjoyed their show the most. It was just plain fun, they keep the crowd entertained and they are decent musicians. The pyrotechnics were fine outside of the fireworks. Face it- they simply don’t belong INSIDE! Fire blasts and sparks I can handle. ‘Never Again’ and ‘Flat on the Floor’ were not in the lineup, however, and I was actually hoping to hear ‘All the Right Reasons’ but did not.
As far as sound, overall, the biggest problem is not the bands, its the venue. You can’t understand what singers are saying at times because Target Center is a horrible concert venue and always has been! We were at the very 1st concert ever held there and they moved 3000+ people out of the upper level because people couldn’t hear anything- acoustics were that bad! My audiophile husband refuses to go to any concert there unless the seats are somewhere behind the sound board (and ours last night were LL behind the sound board).
As far as those ripping on Nickelback are concerned, for those who actually attended the concert, my question is ‘why?’ If you already predetermined by listening to their CD’s and hearing them on the radio that you don’t like them for whatever reason, then DON’T GO! It’s just that easy! If you went for the other 2 bands no one forced you to stay for more. For those expressing concerns that the band frequently spoke of being drunk, dropping F-bombs, etc. implying that they should perhaps be mindful of the younger people at the concert… give me a break. The band shouldn’t have to apologize. Rock concerts are NOT for kids- plain and simple. An informed parent should know better that Nickelback has a lot of very adult-themed lyrics. Keep the kids at home if you don’t want them exposed to that kind of atmosphere and music.
This was my second time seeing the “All the right reasons Tour” last night. The first time that I saw the show was back in january 2006 in Duluth. I missed them when they came to the Excel. My point is it was over a year and a half ago and there setlist is exactly the same or very close. I feel that there is no reason for that beings that they have so many albums to go off of. I feel that is pretty sad beings they are such a popular band. I feel if they keep that up they are going to lose true fans that like to come out to there shows 2-3 times per year.
I saw the concert at the Xcel center last fall and it was awesome there, but you also had a bigger line up to get ready for Nickelback. The set was the same as the Xcel, but they put on one hell of a show and I would see them again. Everyone in my section was standing and singing along with the band. That should be a testimate to their talent. The only thing they need to do now is get a new album done before everyone hates all the songs being played on local radio and internet radio.
The only problem with the concert was terrible acoustics of the Target Center. When you have that small of a space and that loud of Pyro it will tend to get to you.
I loved the concert. I don’t understand why everyone is so up in arms about everything being the same. It was still fun. Staind ROCKED. They were way better than I thought they’d be.
It was nice to see Chris Daughtry. He is awesome live, and I love his album.
If any of these bands come again, I will go see them!
the only thing wrong was that it was at the target center! the show at the xcel rocked!nickelback puts on a great show,i for one like when they connect with the fans as well play their music if you don’t, then really you should just pop in a cd. i also agree if your kids can’t handle swearing or talk of drinking then they really should not be there. i brought my sixteen year old and he loved it but he also realizes he is not allowed to do or say the things chad kroeger does. when they come back, i’ll be there!!

When all they talk about is sex and beer and whatever, it gets kind of old, even for someone that isnt a “kid”
Thank you Gail, you proved my point! Sex, drugs and rock n’ roll sell and sell well. Nickelback=sell outs. Who ever made the Manson comment, Manson sucks too as does most death metal etc. bands. They are not musicians. Maybe artists, but not musicians.
I was at the Nickelback concert Monday night and was FAR from disappointed. Even though this was my 1st Nickelback concert, who cares if they repeat the set list.. Does anyone really expect them to have enough time to go and change it all up? I guess I don’t. And I have to say I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF THAT CONCERT… From DAUGHTRY to STAIND to NICKELBACK..!
I don’t think that chris will ever become an “idol castaway” because he is WAY to talented and people know it. I also think that it helps that he didn’t win, therefore he’s free to write/produce whatever music he wants and isn’t labeled as the “American Idol” which may turn some people away..
All in all. the concert was amazing and I would see it over and over again no matter what the set list was.. You have to expect that its going to be similar, if not the same…

I thought the concert was AWESOME from start to finish. I had the privilege of meeting Daughtry at the Meet & Greet before the concert….and what a great group of guys! Really nice, normal, laid back, down-to-earth. They were all smiles. I went to the concert primarily to see Daughtry, but I was really impressed with Nickelback, too. Chad Kroeger is not only an awesome singer, but a great entertainer, too! He really interacted with the crowd a lot. I agree with the comments about everything being a little too LOUD. They could have toned everything down a few decibels and it would have been better. My ears have finally stopped ringing after two days!
All in all, an AMAZING concert.
WHile I was at the concert on Monday night to see both Nickelback and Daughtry, it was Staind that was truly the surprise of the night.
Staind rocked the house and they were very tight musically - more so than either Nickelback or Daughtry. The only problem I had with Staind is that the vocals were lost in the mix.
Chris Daughtry is great, but I think he could ditch some of the band members or sound crew, because they sounded sloppy from where I was sitting. On one song, his drummer turned keyboardist rattled off a bunch of bum notes at the beginning.
I’d also have to agree with the folks that said that Nickelback talked way too much. Who cares about getting drunk all the time or all the sex you’re having? I went to listen to some live music, not all the other B.S. When they did actually play, it was cool. Without the talk, they could’ve played at least another 5-6 songs in the same amount of time.
I won’t be seeing Nickelback again. Daughtry will only get better. And Staind…I’ve been listening to and downloading their tunes the last couple of days. They’ve got a new fan!
Well Nickelback was great it was my 1st time to their concert and I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if it was a repeat I wouldn’t care I loved hearing the sing and jam!!!!!!!! Daughtry was awesome he has a great voice and like to get involved with his fans!! Now staind whom I like,I was kinda disappointed with them they were very monotoned. I can’t wait to go to another Nickelback concert & would love to see Daughtry again on his own. If you could have taken Staind out & left Daughtry & Nickelback to play longer I would have LOVED that!!!!!!!!! I don’t like getting drunk or anything for that matter because I want to enjoy the concert & I was glad not to get kicked in the head by body surfing so I was actually enjoying the music and listening to them talk to the crowd. They were very funny.
This is the last concert I’d ever want to attend. I completely agree with all who say that these are the token rock bands who are puppeteered by the record industry maybe with the exception of Staind. Every time a new Nickleback CD or single is well received I can only shake my head in wonder. I saw them at one of the X-Fests years and years ago and they were one of the first bands on Friday evening and barely known. I remember my friends and I talking about how they really sucked then. I can’t imagine it now when they’re even more void of passion and creativity. Nickleback knows what they are, as do people with taste in music.
I was right behind the sound board, and it obviously makes a HUGE difference because it was by far the best I’ve ever heard a concert sound in there. It WAS way loud, by I was impressed with how the snare cracked and kick drum thumped…most concerts, those key elements seem to just not translate well miced into a full arena. I thought Aaron Lewis from Stained sounded better than I’ve ever heard him, which is probably like 5 times. I DO agree that Chad Krueger got really annoying with all the talking and BS. He could have played something off of their first album instead, and probably pleased a lot of old school fans.
My question to Chris R. is this. In your review you mentioned that the concert wasn’t “scary” which I can only assume is translated into you thinking they didn’t take any chances? Is this correct? I’m always confused when reviewers mention that a concert is too comfortable and not scary enough. It’s kind of a catch 22 isn’t it? The reason a band is selling out an area is because of their radio singles….so when they come to town, are they supposed to AVOID the radio singles? I mean Nickleback has had SO many songs on the radio, that it’s damn near impossible not to have your whole setlist comprise of radio songs. You’re trying to push a new album so a few deeper tracks off of that album obviously need to be played. There isn’t much time for anything else…I mean they didn’t play the two radio singles off their debut album at all, which is what put them on the map in the first place.
THEY NEVR PLAYED NEVER AGAIN!
Nickelback is a terrible and untalented band.
Daughtry is cheap factory music.
There is a joke that my friends have about the current state of the mainstream music industry - We believe that there are two music writers/lrycist who write all music that is played on main stream radio(rap-r&b-rock-soul). One of these writers writes for Nickelback.
They offer nothing in redeeming value.
