Flaming Lips or Crowded House?
Posted on September 10th, 2007 – 2:45 AMBy Chris Riemenschneider
Sunday was a busy night for music in our little big town(s), so we couldn’t make either the Flaming Lips or the Crowded House shows (see: our reviews of Rush and the Bob Feldman tribute). We’re eager to hear how the shows went, especially the Lips. Did they do anything crazy, other than their usal crazy stuff? And how did it go in terms of the Myth, did the band and/or the crowd seem to dig the venue? Crowded House was getting very favorable reviews in other cities, did thereunited banddeserve the same here?

Although it was nearly impossible to top last year’s State Fair show, the Lips came close last night at the Myth. Wayne mentioned playing all the other venues in town and admitted to having reservations playing the Myth, but he said, on a number of occasions, that he liked the venue and the vibe of the show. I thought it was great to bring the circus-like atmosphere, which is a Lips show, into an intimate rock club. They’re still focusing the set list on “At War with the Mystics”, but they did dig into the past with great versions of “Mountain Side” and the crowd favorite, “She Don’t Use Jelly”. The ended the show with an amazing version of the Rolling Stone’s “Moonlight Mile”. Wayne did mention that last year’s State Fair show is one of the most memorable shows they’ve ever played.
Here’s the Lips’ set as copied from a Lips message board:

Closing with the Stones song was great. Wayne commented on the vibe alot, but from where I was (a back corner of the club) I certainly didn’t see much that deserved such praise. Perhaps the vibe was much more palpable from where he was, and I just didn’t see it. He did give several props to the venue and staff. It was my first time at the Myth and, being where I was, I don’t feel I got the full experience that could be had, so I look forward to going again.
I also thought Black Moth Super Rainbow were fantastic openers. I will be checking out more of their stuff.
