Dates with all-stars

You might’ve seen their names on the club calendars butdidn’tput two-and-two together (that is, the two legends who front each band):

*The Gutter Twins, featuring Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli and Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan, are performing at First Ave on March 8 a couple weeks into their tour. Some of you might also know Dulli fron the Twilight Singers and Lanegan from his Queens of the Stone Age work or underrated solo albums. Their new band’s debut “Saturnalia” comes outon Sub Pop just a few days before the gig, and it’s a doozy — as dark and powerful as anything they’ve ever done.

*Carbon/Silicon, led by Mick Jones (the Clash, Big Audio Dynamite) and Tony James (Generation X), will maketheir local debut March 30 at the Varsity Theater. The Current has been playing their single “The News” a lot — a bit too much, if you ask me (anybody else think the Current is getting conspicuously repetitive?). Still, their record’s pretty fun, and I bet the show will be, too.

I love the Current something fierce, but my friends and I have been remarking lately about the increase in overplaying new artists. I love a lot of the stuff I’m hearing, but I don’t tune in to 89.3 to get sick of good songs. Lupe Fiasco, Carla Bruni, MGMT… it’s all good stuff, but they’re definitely beating it to death.

Paul Kelly isn’t an all-star in the US, but he is in his home country of Australia. On Thursday March 6 he’ll be the opening act, I can still hardly believe it, for Big Head Todd and the Monsters at First Avenue.

For the Paul Kelly fans in town, and I know there are somebecause they were all there at the 400 Bar the last time he played here about six years ago, it’s a chance to see a guy some of us consider to be among the three or four best songwriters in the world today. If you’re a Big Head Todd fan and going to the show, do yourself a big favor and get there in time to hear Paul Kelly. This is not your typical warm-up act, it’s a chance to experience a musician who in his own country plays to sold-out arenas and packed theaters.

His latest cd “Stolen Apples” isn’t released in the US yet, but you can check out the single “God Told Me To” here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ptzrY7JuG_4
