Rock the Garden, DMB summer dates

Ah, outdoor summer concerts… bring em on!

The official announcement won’t be made till tomorrow afternoon, but it’s clear from the New Pornographers‘ tour itinerary that they’ll be one of the bands performing outside the Walker Art Center on June 21 for the return of the sorely missed Rock the Garden concert. The full lineup and ticket info will be announced Tue at 5 p.m. on the Current (89.3 FM).

Another big concert that might generate a lot of local interest: The Dave Matthews Band and Black Crowes are teaming up for a two-night, Grateful Dead-style stand Aug. 9-10 at Alpine Valley amphitheater in East Troy, Wis. (about five hours from the Twin Cities). Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. for $75 and $40.

Meanwhile, the itinerary for the Vans Warped Tour has been announced, and there’s no Minneapolis date on it. Turns out, there is a confirmed stop Aug. 3 somewhere in our vicinty, they just haven’t settled on a venue yet. My vote would’ve been Midway Stadium instead of the Metrodome parking lot, but the Saints have a game that day. Back to Harriet Island??Â

Nice, 4-for-4. All of those would be pretty magical.

Yep, that’s the just-announced whole lineup — taken straight off the Current’s playlist, it seems. They’d better stock the backstage area with a lot of sunscreen for that lineup.

Tickets are on sale NOW at $30 advance, or you can get a free one by becoming a Walker or Minnesota Public Radio member. Go to http://www.walkerart.org/tickets.

Chris
Must respectfully disagree that the Rock The Garden shows have been sorely
missed. The Walker may run a fine event
inside but there concerts outside have been the biggest cluster***** I’ve ever
attended. The first one took forever to get in to and 2 of them had the most disgraceful beverage lines ever, more than an hour long. Worse than the Summit
calamity 2 summers ago. Each of the events have shown incredibl disrespect for their audience by how badly they were run. Thanks for the forum to get that off my chest.

Good points, I hope the organizers read them.

The thing I never get is: Beer sales are the No. 1 way these events make money, so why not surround the place with 50 Summit trucks? But then again, Summit themselves didn’t even have enough trucks at their own 20th anniversary bash two years ago on Harriet Island (they actually ran out of beer for a while … downright disgraceful!).

Rock the Garden’s a little different, as it’s as much a membership-drive thing and advertisement for the Walker as it is about simply making money. But then again, the Basillica Block Party is thrown for exactly the same reason, and those Catholics don’t have a problem selling as much beer as possible.

There are always different logistical problems with any and all of these outdoor fests. They’re sort of par for the course. With that in mind, I think there’s still a great demand for Rock the Garden and any other outdoor rock fests that reach beyond the Cities 97 and especially the KQRS playlists.

It should be noted that the Current website doesn’t mention Neko Case, so it’ll be a Neko-free version of the NP’s which, in my opinion, takes the band down a huge notch.

I love those guys, but Neko’s leads and harmonies take them to the next level. I’ll probably skip it and wait for their next appearance, so that’ll be one less guy in the beer line for you!
