The lineup for Lollapalooza has been announced (Aug. 1-3, Grant Park, Chicago):

Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, Wilco, Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Black Keys, Love & Rockets, Cat Power, Broken Social Scene, the National, Girl Talk, Bloc Party, Spank Rock… More at www.lollapalooza.com.

I’d say that’s officially the best fest lineup of the year. Who’s going now?

anyone know if radiohead will be playing a non-lollapalooza show in chicago?

As far as headliners, I think Bonnaroo’s still the best this year. Coachella’s got the most “exclusives” (Portishead, Fatboy Slim), but bad headliners. All Points West is so much smaller. So far Lolla’s looking pretty good. But Rage and NIN? Lame. How many festivals can Rage play? And most fans would rather see Radiohead do their own show than a festival appearance. At least there are less jambands this year… Outside lands has WAY too many.

i’d argue Outside Lands still has a better initial lineup.

ACL will also beat Lolla

and no, that is Radiohead’s one Chicago/midwest show

Aw, you guys have been listening to your iPod headphones too much and not cranking your stereo enough. Have you forgotten how to headbang? Rage and NIN are almost always a visceral thrill in concert, and loud-n-heavy bands like that are always all the more impressive when it’s 50,000 people rocking out (vs. Radiohead, who I agree I’d rather see do their own show). Let your inner 13-year-old shine and rock out.

Funny thing about the lineup: The Black Keys, Black Lips and Black Kids are all playing. Too bad Black Sabbath aren’t reuniting this year, too (and talk about headbanging music!).

I’m going for sure. I think this is the best sextet of headliners this year so far.

I have heard from multiple sources that Radiohead’s outdoor festival shows are nothing short of transcendent. They have played to 100,000 + people at Glastonbury twice (I think) with no complaints. That being said, I agree that I would prefer that they set up in my basement and rock out just for me, but I’ll take what I can get.

Rage - I saw them last year at Rock the Bells in San Fran and they were fantastic. Well worth the plane ticket and (modest) $60 ticket for the entire festival. (which also included the Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, etc.)

fortunately, minneapolis has a great music scene and most of the Lolla bands will make their way here again at some point (with the unfortunate exception of Radiohead and Rage).

but when will the twin cities we get a respectable outdoor amphitheater that holds more than 500 people??

for now, a plea for radiohead in duluth … wilco was great there.

Radiohead in Duluth would be great, but if Wilco could only draw 2,000 up there… not a chance!

You’re right a lot of the other acts will be here in town (although, neither NIN nor Raconteurs have confirmed up our way yet), but the aforementioned lack of an outdoor venue here makes Lolla all the more appealing. I’ll take an outdoor gig over an indoor gig anytime — especially if the indoor options are the Target Center or Roy Wilkins.

And speaking of our lack of outdoor venues… Not sure if any of you rock fans double as Twins fans, but the boys are playing the White Sox in Chicago over the four days prior to Lollapalooza. I hear the Sox’s stadium is awesome, if not quite Wrigley Field awesome.

twins baseball and good music, all outdoors, is definitely a tempting combo. wish the Lolla vip tickets weren’t so ridiculously expensive (appr. $800).

also, radiohead in duluth (when the temp doesn’t drop 50 degrees in a two hour span) could work. they would draw people from all over the Midwest and Canada. plus, they haven’t played in minn. for who knows how long, whereas wilco comes quite a bit.

anyway, probably just wishful thinking …

Chris-NIN announced last month that they are playing the Target Center(unfortunately-the venue, not that they are playing here) on August 2nd.

Bottom line-Radiohead’s only performance in the area=I’m going.

pretty sure we’ll see the Raconteurs in town around the first week of August just as we did 2 years ago. Gnarls maybe too (even if their new album is pretty ho-hum).

and yeah, that NIN date was announced a while ago.

Chris Riemenschneider says:

Oh yeah… here’s more NIN info: http://targetcenter.blogspot.com

No ticket info yet. The drag is it’s either see them at Lolla or see them here (same weekend). Same thing happened with Raconteurs two years ago: I missed them at First Ave because I was at Lolla (although I did catch Gnarls a night earlier at the Ave, and then at Lolla again!).

Pretty sure you won’t see any of those bands in Minneapolis in August. Lollapalooza generally makes artists sign non-compete agreements which stretch as far away as…..yes…Minneapolis.

Mark, actually it doesn’t stretch to Minneapolis… it’s within a 100 mile radius i believe.

because both Raconteurs & Gnarls, along with about 3-4 other bands all played Minneapolis the very same weekend of Lollapalooza in 2006, and did as well in 2007 and 2005. Madison even got some Lolla bands as well.

woops, i see my comment is a bit hard to read… those bands didn’t play here in 2007 and 2005, just 2006. meant that other bands who played Lolla played here the same weekend of Lolla in ‘05 & ‘06.
