Atmosphere test for Memorial Day

soundset-flyer.jpgRhymesayers Entertainment will test its drawing power with help from local concert vets Rose Presents for a one-day festival on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 25, outside in the Metrodome parking lot. They’re calling it Soundset ‘08, and it will feature almost the whole Rhymesayers crew, including Atmosphere as headliners, Brother Ali, Eyedea & Abilities, I Self Devine, P.O.S., Blueprint, Psalm One and Los Nativos. They’re also bringing Dilated Peoples and Aesop Rock to town for more star power. Tickets are on sale now for three days only (through Fri) at $20, after which they’re still a very reasonable $25. Go to www.rhymesayers.com for more info.

Not only will this event determine whether or not Atmosphere and Co. can bring out more than the 1,500 fans who show up to all their First Ave gigs (how many are repeats when it’s a sold-out three-night stand?), it will test a theory I’ve been floating for a long time: That local promoters should book more music events around the big holidays (Memorial Day, Labor Day and — for those of us who don’t care to see Eddie Money and George Thorogood at Taste of Minnesota –the Fourth of July). The old theory used to be that everyone spends the holidays at their lake cabins.

What do you think: Is Soundset a good idea or not? And how many of you actually have lake cabins?

Soundset ‘08 answers when and where Atmosphere is going to perform to promote its new album, “When Life Gives You Lemons…,” out April 22. There will also be a midnight release party at Fifth Element record store the night of April 21, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Slug and Ant there.

I actually think they are going to get a decent number of people. To imply that Atmosphere couldn’t get more than 1500 people to this show is kind of ignorant. They have played here only a couple of times in the last year plus. I think they’ll get maybe 10,000 people to show up. For $20, maybe more like 15,000. We’ll see, maybe the venue will turn some people off. I think Harriet Island would have been a better choice.

My family has a cabin and I plan on going to this instead. I wish they would plan more things for long holiday weekends. Maybe the reason people leave is that there isn’t anything to do.

I do believe Atmosphere can draw more than 1,500 people in town… but the truth is, we don’t know if they can because they never play anywhere in town besides First Ave (for good reason, mind you).

I think they (and Dilated, Ali, Aesop Rock, E&A, etc) can draw a big crowd. Awesome lineup, awesome price. Wish I could be there for it! But where’s MURS???
