Chrisette Michele @ Trocaderos

Ever go to a show that’s way better than the album? That’s what happened Friday at Trocaderos with Chrisette, whose “I Am” is an old-school soul charmer. But she exhibited so much more personality, range and excitement. She was an animated, work-the-stage-and-sweat-like- Whitney performer, with impressive instincts in jazz, soul, hip-hop and gospel. There were echoes of Phoebe Snow, Corinne Bailey Rae, Erykah Badu, Billie Holiday and Mary J. Blige in her performance. She even covered a couple of Supremes songs with gospel-like flair and ended her 50-minute set in Mary J. style.

I didn’t stick around for Raheem Devaughn but I did catch opening act Solange Knowles. While Beyonce’s little sis has improved since I saw her open for Destiny’s Child, there was still too much Supremes and Destiny’s Child in her show.

What did you think of the show? Please post your comments here. Â
