Death Cab for Cutie’s Orpheum gig

deathcab.jpgI had a mixed reaction to the new record, and I’ve never been as avid a listener of theirs as a lot of people, but I’ve always been impressed anytime I’ve seen Death Cab for Cutie in concert. This time, not quite so much. Despite the high-energy, fast-paced delivery, it never felt as exciting and rabid as past shows. The band’s charm and power definitely still came through loud and clear, but not as forcefully as before.

Look for the full review at www.startribune.com/music, and let us know how you liked the concert below. Here’s the set list:

Bixby Canyon Bridge  /  The New Year  /  Why You’d Want to Live Here  /  Photobooth  /  Crooked Teeth  /  Long Division  /  Grapevine Fires  /  Movie Script Ending  /  Company Calls  /  Soul Meets Body  /  I Will Follow You Into the Dark  / I Will Possess Your Heart  /  Cath  /  We Laugh Indoors  /  Sound of Settling  /  Marching Bands of Manhattan

ENCORE: Talking Bird  /  Title and Registration  /  405  /  Your Heart Is an Empty Room  /  Transatlanticisim

I really enjoyed the show, however it was unbelievably, and unnecessarily loud. When will bands realize that they can deliver a high-energy performance and still let people actually hear the music? Rogue Wave was also great.

I thought last night’s show was better than the shows that I’ve seen in the past. I’ve only seen them at First Avenue before this and I thought their show translated better in the theater. This was the first time that I was really impressed with them live. It was a little loud, but not overly so for me.

With the Ben makeover, my girlfriend and I were wondering who was on-stage with the guys from Death Cab until Ben sang. It was weird…she commented that she preferred him pudgy. I felt like it was a Death Cab cover band. They played well, there was good energy, but there wasn’t the soul that the band is able to convey in the clubs. Transatlanticism felt extremely empty and devoid of any passion whatsoever. I’m sure it was great for first timers, but for the long time fans, it felt like they were just going through the motions.

Great show! My first show at the Orpheum. I am a 47 year old dad - my 19 year old daughter turned me on to Death Cab, so I treated her to tickets for the show. I was impressed with the talent and sound (I like loud music)by both bands. I am not a long-time fan but it was one omy favorite shows in quite some time!

I have to say, I loved Death Cab when I saw them play at First Ave, and at Northrop. However, I was disappointed with the show at the Orpheum. I thought it was too loud, and the sounds, at least from my vantage point, did not mesh well.
