STP’s setlist from RWA

Here’s a theory that came to mind as I left Stone Temple Pilots last night at Roy Wilkins: They could be the next Aerosmith.

What I mean is, STP started off as sort of a somewhat contrived mish-mash of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden. What Weiland and Co. are to those bands, Aerosmith was to Zeppelin and the Stones. Nonetheless, the Boston boys amassed loads of radio hits that FM stations continued to play even as the band slid into (drug-addled) oblivion in the early 80s, and that airplay helped set up their comeback in the late-80s. STP also has a lot of hits still getting played, and judging by the performance and the crowd’s enthusiasm last night, they could truly be geared for a comeback.

Click here to see the full review of last night’s show, and keep the comments coming. For the record, I wasn’t whining about not getting my reviewer tickets last night. I was thrilled, since it all made for great copy after Scott’s comments. I thought it was worth writing about it simply because Weiland might’ve actually been insecure enough about his public persona to care what a little old critic from Minneapolis writes about him. Shut up and sing, dude.

STP, BTW, will be back in our area July 19 to play the Cadott Rock Fest in Cadott, Wis., by Chippewa Falls, 100 miles or so from the cities. Here’s their set list from last night (please fill the two holes):

Big Empty / Wicked Garden / Big Bang Baby / ?? / Vasoline / Lounge Fly / Lady Picture Show / Soul Girl / Creep / Crackerman / Plush / Interstate Love Song / Too Cool Queenie / ?? / Sex Type Thing / Sin

Encore: Dead & Bloated / Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart

I believe that it was Silvergun Superman that came after Big Bang Baby, and after Interstate Love Song I thought it was Still Remains and Coma, not Too Cool Queenie. It’s hard to say for sure, but I’m pretty sure I’m right.

The first blank is indeed Silvergun Superman. The second blank is Coma and that did come after Too Cool Queenie. They also slipped the song “Down” in there somewhere too. That was the song where Weiland came out into the audience…

“Down” came between “Coma” and “Sex Type Thing,” I believe.

What a great show - they were definitely on to a T - playing at a great pace through the entire show and sounding better than the studio!! I haven’t seen a more crisp show with the great backdrop of stage lighting too. Scott Weiland was feeling it and the whole group seemed to really be enjoying themselves along with the crowd of roughly 4,000. I’ve seen him with Velvet Revolver and I believe at an Edgefest way back too - I don’t know if it was the Legendary atmosphere of Roy Wilkins or what - but this was a show to be remembered and not forgotten!! I saw REM the night before and I’ve seen them a number of times before (lackluster show compared to this one - though they sounded good) - not many could keep up with STP Friday night!! A show I won’t forget - glad I decided to scalp a ticket last minute. May even take a trip to see them on the later leg of this 65 city NA tour!! Looking forward to a new STP album - sounds like it might happen!!
