Wild MN Zoo series finale with Jerry Jeff

jjw.jpgzoo.jpgSince Billy Bob Thornton’s show next Saturday was moved to the Pantages, a more musically beloved three-name bubba, Texas country hero Jerry Jeff Walker, had the honor of wrapping up this year’s Music in the Zoo series. What a perfect finale. The weather was gorgeous, the Summit beer was flowing, the amphitheater was packed and everything that’s right and wonderful about the zoo shows hit home (as did the one negative: the $37 ticket price was on par with other high prices out there this summer).

Always a party starter, Walker seemed extra playful after opening with “Gettin’ By” and “PickUp Truck.” He soon went right into “Mr. Bojangles” and “L.A. Freeway” but had plenty to offer in the latter half of the set. One of the highlights was a cover of his acolyte Todd Snider’s “Alright Guy.” He also encored with a terrific spin through Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings.” No stranger in Dylan country, Jerry Jeff recounted his gig history here, starting with “some coffeehouse in Dinkytown in ‘77 or ‘78″ (anybody remember that one?), then the Cabooze, Guthrie and the Medina Ballroom. He showed just how well he knows his way around by supplanting Grain Belt for Shiner beer during “Redneck Mother.”

What did you think of the Music in the Zoo series this year? Suggestions for next year?

Who the F is Jerry Jeff Walker, and why would anyone want to see him?

Who the hell is Larry, and why would the 1,400 people who paid $37 to see Jerry Jeff Walker care that he doesn’t know who the guy is?

You’re right about the lack of youth out there, Jeff, but… if they booked it, would the kids come? One problem is the ticket prices (it’s an expensive place to operate as a venue). Also, I’m guessing the zoo operators worry about young fans tearing the place up or jumping into the gorilla cage or whatever. Still, once again young rock fans in the Twin Cities are sorely missing out on the joys of outdoor rock ‘n’ roll.

Chris,

You’re a hack. I know who Jerry Jeff Walker is, and am a lot older than you. This guy has always sucked, and this explains why he’s a back-up, medina ballroom kind of dildo.

Do you actually get paid for the crap you write?
