Obama’s walk-off music: Huh?!

bd.jpgbarack.jpgIf you were expecting to hear Otis’s or Sam’s version of “A Change Is Gonna Come” or Stevie’s “Higher Ground” as Barack Obama asborbed all the applause after his speech last night, you were probably shocked and awed to instead hear this yee-haw of a country song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLILrC7Y5L4

The rah-rah tune, by Brooks & Dunn, was actually used by the Bush campaign in 2004. The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville has an interesting article about the duo’s reaction to its double-useage (click here). No doubt, Obama supporters are hoping that’s the only time their guy does the same thing Bush did.

What did/do you think of the song? And either way, do you think it was smart in a political way for him use it?

I know Kix Brooks from our days at military school, and the man loves hims some George W. Bush. So Obama definitely would have lost his vote if it had been there for the taking.
It was an odd choice. But the rest of the music of the evening was so middle-aged uncrazy that it made sense to mix in something from the last, oh, decade. And I don’t think Kanye or Moby woulda got ‘er done.

Odd choice is right. Not being a country music fan, I bristled but wrote if off as an attempt to grab the attention of that audience more usually associated with GOP voting. I appreciated it as a gesture of inclusion, even as I hit the mute button & went to closed captions.

To be fair, Kanye or Moby would have had the same effect. I thought they hit the perfect note earlier in the week with Springsteen. That would’ve been the perfect ribbon to tie it all up last night.

Maybe he’s trying to steal some of the “Good ol boys” vote from the south?? I think Obama should walk in and out to the most succesful band from whatever state he is speaking in. Our state, Prince or Bob Dylan. Wisconsin, the BoDeans. Iowa, Slipknot????

Anyway, when Bill Clinton walked out to “Addicted to Love” it was the best unintentional comedy mooment of the DNC!

he’s used that song at his rally’s almost all year. it’s part of his “rally mixtape” apparently, because it played (along w/ U2’s “Beautiful Day” 2 or 3 times at his Target Center rally earlier this year
