Neko Case at First Ave

Between her many good-natured (and oftentimes funny) pitches for her, um, pet causes, Neko Case did a little bit of singing with her enormous-sized voice last night. Man, what a crooner. Just a few shows into her fall tour, she was singing with absolute gusto. Her 90-minute set was a nice mish-mash of new, recent and old songs. The new stuff was among the best of the night, too. My favorite was a Harry Nilsson cover (also sung by Marianne Faithfull), “Don’t Forget Me,” which she said she recorded for her upcoming album.
I didn’t catch Neko’s full set (I was in and out of the Entry seeing new local all-star band the Dynamiters … a lot of fun but still a little half-baked). Some of the songs I heard besides the new stuff included (in order): Deep Red Bells, I Wish I Was the Moon, Margaret vs. Pauline, Favorite, Maybe Sparrow, That Teenage Feeling, and John Saw That Number. She ended with Look for Me (I’ll Be Around).
It was the most packed I’d ever seen First Ave for a Neko show (and the most packed I’d seen First Ave in a while), and — when she wasn’t chatting for a good cause — it was also probably the most consistent show I’ve seen her do anywhere.
By the way, here are some links to some of the organizations Neko was touting at the show, bless her heart: www.adopt-a-greyhound.org www.MVHSpets.org www.animalhumanesociety.org www.headcount.org

Great show. Loved the “Buckets of Rain” Dylan cover at the end as well as the new tunes from her upcoming album.
Also, Giant Sand was the perfect opener.
