Eagles @ Target Center

The last Eagles show in the Twin Cities in 2003 was everything you could have hoped for because they were enthusiastic, energetic (for them) and exciting. Tuesday’s return engagement suffered from little passion and poor pacing (why start each half with a bunch of new songs? maybe mix in a hit, too, or just stop playing so many mid-tempo tunes).
These guys in the undertaker suits seemed too professional. To be sure, the harmonies were good. Lead vocals by Glenn Frey and Don Henley were strong and confident; Timothy B. Schmit’s voice sounded strained and unassertive. And Joe Walsh was the usual clown prince, the life of the Eagles’ party, such as it is. But let loose and play as a band, not as a bunch of studio players.
The Eagles played two songs fewer than in most other cities on this tour (they just did one encore, instead of two).
Here is the set list:
SET ONE: 1. How Long (2007) 2. Too Busy Being Fabulous (2007) 3. I Dont Want to Hear Anymore (2007) 4. Guilty of the Crime (2007) 5. Hotel California (1977) 6. Peaceful Easy Feeling (73) 7. I Cant Tell You Why (80) 8. Witchy Woman (72) 9. Lyin Eyes (75) 10. Boys of Summer (Henley, 84) 11. In the City (79) 12. Long Run (79)
SET TWO: 13. No More Walks in the Woods (07) 14. Waiting in the Weeds (07) 15. No More Cloudy Days (07) 16. Love Will Keep Us Alive (95) 17. Take It to the Limit (76) 18. Long Road Out of Eden (07) 19. Somebody (07) 20. Walk Away (Walsh from James Gang, 71) 21. One of These Nights (75) 22. Life’s Been Good (Walsh, 78) 23. Dirty Laundry (Henley, 82) 24. Funk 49 (James Gang, 70) 25. Heartache Tonight (79) 26. Life in the Fast Lane (77) ENCORE 27. Take It Easy (72) 28. Desperado (73)

Good times…first off. But you talk about Don Henley being self absorbed, how about the fans, I missed probably two songs from my seat, as people try to find their seat in the dark, oblivious to anyone around them, almost comical. They are stiff, is Henley just an unhappy in life? Maybe being a robot on stage playing the same corporate rock, same setlist in order as the night before, must just get to you. And shame on Joe Wals, lip syncing Life’s Been Good, I should have known better. I am sure the band or Don said you are not singing Joe, we don;t know what lyrics you will forget.
Jon, your an idiot. I,m from Kansas City and have been reading all concert reviews for the Eagles from other cities waiting to see them when they come here in Nov. Every review from other cities were positive except yours because your so upset about the Twins lost(I,m glad we(kansas City) put your team in that position.) You talk about the Twins in your review more than about the concert. Why don’t you become a sports writer and leave concert reviews to people who appreciate good bands.
On the same blog .. what I love and hate about popular music.
Older but still interested, relevant musicians like Westerberg and Stinson making a plan to work together again (we hope.) But taking it slow until it’s good enough .. until they have something to say.
And the corpses known as the Eagles continuing to assault and insult the American public with bland, lame Vegas-style review shows they pass off as a concert.
What do the Twins have to do with the Eagles concert exactly?
I don’t think we were at the same concert based upon your ridiculous unprofressional review!
This concert was exceptional - exactly what I wanted and everything I expected. They are true musicians and have tremendous harmonies and play from the heart! It’s ALL about the music - not the show!
Look up “class” in the dictionery because they have it and you don’t Jon!
What is the Star Tribune doing with a reviewer like this???
PERSONALLY, I THOUGHT THE CONCERT WAS PRETTY GOOD….MAYBE, NOT THE BEST EVER BUT CERTAINLY NOT BAD….I WILL SAY, THOUGH, THAT ALTHOUGH THIS CONCERT TOUR WAS NOT LABELED A “FAREWELL TOUR” LIKE OTHERS OF THEIRS HAVE BEEN CALLED IN THE PAST, THE WAY THEY CLOSED THE SHOW WITH “DESPARADO” AND THEIR WAVES GOODBYE, I’D SAY THAT IT SEEMS LIKE A FAIRLY GOOD CHANCE WE HAVE SEEN THE LAST CONCERT OF THE GROUP TOGETHER HERE IN THE TWIN CITIES. I MAY BE WRONG BUT THAT’S WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE TO ME.
Jon,
Your paper is on the verge of bankruptcy. You write a horrible review, in fact I would bet less than 5% of the audience would agree with you.
Are you starting to see a pattern here?
You are as out of touch as your idiotic management and editorial staff.
You sir, truly suck as a critic.
Don’t go away mad, just go away.
Minnesota deserves a better paper.
It has been 30 years since my last Eagles concert, (Hotel California tour),and drove 7hrs to see my favorite band. They are the classiest bunch of musicians on the planet and have been putting out great music for many years. The group of 8 I came with thought it was one of the best concerts they have seen. They sound the way you remember them and continue to write music that touches old fans as well as new ones…don’t know what this critic was smoking but the Eagles rocked!, so does Minneapolis, and the Twins still are the best even with the loss…Thanks Minneapolis!! One great City!!! Another great evening of entertainment!
Yes! The concert was fantastic because you were there..right? Let’s hear it for objective critique.
Hey Mike,
Maybe the Strib can run an on-line poll to see if my assumption is correct, but we know that won’t happen because this paper is in denial. That’s why the paper is on the verge of bankruptcy even though management and the brilliant editorial staff would disagree.
I wonder if they will reconsider while they seek employement elsewhere…..
My wife and I have not been to a concert for years. We both are fans of the Eagles, and we loved the concert.
It was great - period.
They have never sounded better, and as for the showmanship - given the age of the crowd I think it was spot-on.
Professional, entertaining, and enjoyable.
Fabulous concert! Nothing to complain about what so ever! Harmonies were beautiful! The concert was everything we hoped it would be!
Maybe a little less time watching the twins game and your critic may have found himself enjoying the concert!
Thank you Minneapolis! My wife and I drove 12 hours from Canada to see the Eagles concert. It was the first time we saw the Eagles and enjoyed the show. Perhaps it wasn’t their best, as some writers have stated, but we then we don’t have the experience to compare their performances. Simply put, we felt it was worth the trip to your wonderful city; and consider what you paid for tickets vs our drive, hotels, meals (at your great steak houses like Pittsburgh Blue and Seven) etc.
Yes, we also saw the Twins play - but I won’t mix my reviews.
Thanks again for a great concert in a wonderful city!!
