Roy Wilkins + Beck = Blech!

beck.jpgMan, what a mess. Look for my full review at www.startribune.com/music to see just how disappointed I was with last night’s show. This was probably my eighth or ninth Beck show and by far the worst one. It was even among the worst of the couple dozen shows I’ve seen at the terrible Wilkins. I genuinely hope many of you weren’t as let down, because if you were, I’d be looking for a refund.

Anyway, here’s the setlist:

Loser / Nausea / Girl / Timebomb / Minus / Soul of a Man / Chemtrails / Mixed Bizness / Nicotine & Gravy / Que Onda Guero / Hell Yes / Clap Hands / Black Tambourine / Devils Haircut / Orphans / Think I’m in Love / Walls / Missing / The Golden Age / Lost Cause / Where It’s At / ??

ENCORE: Gamma Ray / Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat (Dylan) / Profanity Prayers / E Pro

I think the guy in the jumpsuit who jumped on stage for “Black Tambourine” was the guy who bangs and moves at Hopefuls gigs, but I wasn’t close enough to know for sure. Either way, it’s a sad statement that he was the best thing about the show.

Tambourine guy was pretty entertaining. The set list itself was good, too bad the acoustics were awful.

MGMT sounded muddy and unbalanced. Beck was better, but still ran into difficulties - Hell, Yes anyone?

I wish there was a way to get a refund from that show. Sound issues aside, the only person who even remotely looked like s/he wanted to be on stages (besides the tambourine guy) was Beck’s keyboard player. At the end of the encore, I saw Beck tell his bass player to quit holding the note he was playing on his keyboard. I really got the feeling that he would have rather been watching the Charlie Rose show than playing for us.

Beck is much more enjoyable when he’s a little more energetic and dances some himself.

I agree that the setlist was very good, but Roy Wilkins is just crap. Is there any other place in MSP where you can sell that many tickets and have a GA section up front? I don’t know of one at least.

MGMT threw me off a little bit. I was expecting some energy from them, too, based on some of their songs, but they were largely shoegazers (except for their keyboard player, too.) What is it about the guys that have the most replaceable talent having the most fun in both bands?

Who was the female guitarist? She was the most interesting part of the concert.

MGMT was better than the last time they were in Minneapolis at the Entry… which isn’t saying much. BORING.

The tambourine guy was not Rupert from The Hopefuls fame…but rather “Jed.”

Beck wasn’t bad, but I also hadn’t seen him before and didn’t expect much of anything. I liked the back screen.
