My Morning Jacket lights up Orpheum

mmj.jpgI predicted way back when they announced this one it could be the rock show of the year, and I don’t think I was far off (and anyway, who knew Rage would come to town?!). Look for the full review at www.startribune.com/music.

A few questions lingered after the show: 1. How does Jim James not wind up with a completely shredded voice every night?  2. Is it a rule that everytime he brings out his Flying V guitar he has to completely kick ass?  3. Why didn’t they play “Aluminum Park,” one of the best on the new album?  4. Why hadn’t I realized before this show that “The Way That He Sings” is shivers-inducing?  5. How could a song I so dislike on record, “Highly Suspicious,” be so fun in concert?  6. When they coming back?

THE SETLIST:  At Dawn / Golden / Sec Walkin’ / It Beats 4 U / Evil Urges / Touch Me I’m Going to Scream #1 / Off the Record / The Way That He Sings / I’m Amazed / Phone Went West / Thank You Too! / Two Halves / Remnants / Gideon / Librarian / Steam Engine / Smokin’ From Shootin’ / Touch Me I’m Going to Scream #2       ENCORE: Nashville to Kentucky / Worldess Chorus / Highly Suspicious / Anytime / One Big Holiday

So jealous. Had I not just gotten back from ACL, I would have been there.

It beats 4 U was incredible!

It is amazing that the same band that opened with 4 acoustic/country-ish songs is the same band that rocked the house with “highly suspicious” towards the end. amazing show…my ears are still ringing.

They also played Lay Low during the main set.

Stu, you did miss an absolute stellar performance last night. Highlight for me was Remnants from the new disc. And Gideon was awesome too. Great, great show…

The main set also included Mahgeetah right after Lay Low…or was it the other way around? Awesome show. Can’t wait for their return.

great show. nearly every song sounded as if it could be a suitable closing song. steam engine was fantastic.

They did play Aluminum Park. Only song that was missing from their set was Run Thru. Other than that I had no complaints, despite their new album being much weaker than their previous 2 efforts.

My mistake. Was getting Aluminum Park and Remnants confused with each other. They did NOT play Aluminum Park.

GREAT great show…

i’ve seen MMJ close to a dozen times now and that one was up there (definitely not tops however).

could have done without Librarian though.

and yeah, Highly Suspicious is an awful and silly tune that should have been left as a b-side at best, but is a TON of fun live, no question.

highlights for me were Nashville To Kentucky!!!!! (first time seeing it live i think), At Dawn opener, The Way That He Sings (any song from At Dawn is gonna be a highlight for me), Phone Went West (weird to hear that song so early, it used to be their closer for years), Gideon, Wordless (love when they open with that one too), and obvs One Big Holiday

I’ve been to Lollapalooza to see Radiohead, NIN, Black Keys… at home I’ve seen Rage, Beck, Umphrey’s, Jack Johnson, Leo Kottke, plus many more just this year.

My Morning Jacket was hands down the best live show I have ever seen. They’re one of those bands that absolutely loves what they do, and that translates live. Go get Okonokos if you don’t already have it!

You guys are missing Phone Went West…. that was also fantastic.

Does anyone have any solid photos they wouldn’t mind sharing from last night? I had great seats but most definately forgot the old camera.

Sorry solace, didn’t see that. At Dawn was a perfect way to start the show too, everytime I hear that I wish it was just one minute longer. Too short for such a beautiful song.

God I love this f***in band. There were certainly songs I missed (Dondante, Run Thru, O Is The One…), but how can I complain about this set? I just can’t. As for the performance these guys lay it all out there every night and I will gladly shell out my money to see them. One of the best MMJ shows I’ve seen.

Best $35 I’ve spent in a while. Next up: TV On The Radio.

great show. agree with WB.. steam engine was a fav with plenty of moments to pick from. saw tv on the radio at monolith. really liked the songs off the new cd.

Not to go off topic too much, but “Dear Science,” may be the album of the year and I’m sure the songs will sound great live.

My second time seeing MMJ (first time was the Ascot Room in ‘03ish), and my second time leaving disappointed. The show was waaaaay too loud for my taste (row N on the MF, just right of center), and the songs are just way too repetitive for my taste. It’s nice when they change tempo’s once in a while, but everything just blurred together for me last night. From the outset, I couldn’t help but feel like I should have smoked a bunch of weed before the show. I like this band, but outside of a festival am probably done seeing them live. They don’t fluctuate their songs/sound much (at all?) from their double-live disc Okonokos, and I guess I’ll be content listening to that when I need my MMJ fix from now on.

TVOTR def have a way better record on the year than MMJ, no question about that, but as far as live show, also no contest. TVOTR are a fun/good live band, but not on the level of MMJ just yet. wish they’d bring the Antibalas horns along this tour for the Dear Science stuff.

Curtis Funkhauser, I counted 12 songs played last night that are not on Okonokos. To me, that would suggest its not the same playlist as the one on okonokos

SM, i’m not really sure how big of MMJ fan Curtis is from his comment honestly. i was at both of MMJ’s Ascot shows and they were amazing.

I’m admitedly just a casual fan of MMJ. I enjoy their music but was just hoping for a little more “something” this time… no biggie. Maybe my attention span is too short. :) They’re a very talented group no doubt, and Jim James is a treat to watch and listen to. Everytime he busts out the Flying V it makes me want to go out and buy one!

By far, One Big Holiday was the best part for me. The way that that song got essentially everyone in the crowd standing and jumping, so awesome.
And curtis, you clearly don’t deserve those tickets. Me and the real fans back in row FF and GG get screwed because you “casual fans” take away seats that you don’t deserve.
