Black Crowes @ First Ave

FourĀ things I dug about the Crowes concert Wednesday night atĀ soldout First Ave:

1. Luther Dickinson’s guitar gives the band a kick in the butt.

2. Bringing out homeboy Gary Louris and opening act Vetiver for “Long Black Veil” and Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” turned the spirit of the Crowes’ performance around. So who cares if there were six guitarists, one mandolinist and one banjoist picking on those two pieces?

3. Chris Robinson is exciting when he channels Otis Redding, with slurred southern vocals and all.

4. Lots of clubgoers kept craning to see if that was the Gallagher brothers from Oasis in the owner’s box in the balcony. Sure, looked like them.

What did you think of the show? Please post your comments here:

Great show w/a lively crowd. I agree that Luther Dickinson adds a spark to the band and takes it in a new direction. His interplay with Rich Robinson works very well.

This show wasnt as jammed out as the State Fair show. I am not complaining, just a contrast and a little more focused on songs and not solos.

Even though the crowd was buzzing about Oasis possibly jamming with the Crowes. I really felt the Louris/Vetiver “hootanany” section fit very well with the overall flow of the show.

Memorable night for me. Glad you liked the show Jon!

Good but not great Crowes show. Crowd was a bit pushy, particularly in the begining, which made it difficult to jam with the band. Great mix of old and new stuff. Chris Robinson vocals were a little strained at time, but he still brought the energy as he always does. Brother Rich seemed somewhat board and uninterested with the gig.

when has rich ever looked interested? that was one of the best crowes shows i’ve seen. chris sounded great & luther just gets better & better. we were in the back, near the bar & the sound was fantastic & the crowd wasn’t as pushy there. i would’ve paid the $40 just for that jamboree

The Crowes rocked. One of their best shows, I think. First Ave setting was great. We probably won’t get to see them play that type of venue again anytime soon. Saw them at the MN State Fair and, in my view, this show was considerably better.

Rich always looks somewhat disinterested, but his playing sure doesn’t seem to reflect it.

One the best shows I’ve seen. This was my 15 or 16th Crowes show, and last night was ver fun.

There’s nothing better than “Moving on Down the Line” as an opener.

I totally agree with Louis’ comment that there probably isn’t a better opener than “Moving On Down the Line.” What a great tune and a great vibe to start a show with. That was my 16th Crowes show and it was so fantastic that I want to go catch them in Des Moines again tonight. We were really fortunate to be able to see them in such a relatively small venue. One of the best rock and roll shows I’ve ever seen at First Avenue. A lot of the crowd were very pushy and causing needless chaos on the floor, but I guess that’s what happens when the room has so many inexperienced amateurs are too stupid to know how to control their alcohol intake.

Wow. Big crowd. I don’t go there very often. Has anyone seen a crowd this big at First Ave recently?

Ginks, Drive By Truckers sold out two shows at First Ave a few weeks back.

I’m still smiling about last night’s show. Set list was great, crowd was great and the Crowes were in top form.

drive by truckers were the opening band for the hold steady. yes, the hold steady sold out those two shows and a show this summer w/o the truckers. first ave sells out a fair amount over the course of the year.

Great show. Incredible musicians - I loved Rich’s playing. He may have seemed mellow, but every musician has their own style and his playing was killer last night. I loved “Wiser Time” and the tunes they played with Louris were super cool. I ran into Craig Finn of The Hold Steady after the show and he was kind of a dick. Guess that’s the kind of thing we should expect from a “New York” band. You can stay in NYC, Craig.

Since The Hold Steady is touring the UK these days, it’s unlikely that it was Finn who was the dick.

Atmosphere was a sold-out show too. Sold-out shows at First Ave can sometimes be a real effort…but when they’re as good as DBTs/Hold Steady, Atmosphere, and The Black Crowes, it is worth it. I see that they’ve just added George Clinton and P/Funk. Wow. that should be a pretty crowded night.

My bad on the Craig Finn thing (thanks for pointing that out Skyhook). But I would like to say that Craig Finn’s twin brother is a dick. Man, it looked JUST like him, I swear. Glad to know that it wasn’t him - you want your heros to be cool, especially to YOU. Now I feel like dick. Sorry.
