Jason Shannon CD party tonight

jasons.jpgThanks to the holiday/year-end whir, I didn’t get a chance to check out Jason Shannon’s new eponymous solo CD in time to write a print plug for his release party tonight at the Varsity Theater, which is a shame. A native of Paris, Texas (for real), Shannon used to front a local band called Dear Machine, (the comma was part of the name). His new disc is loaded with vaguely bluesy, Southern, semi-gritty singer-songwriter fare, sort of a mix of John Hiatt and Son Volt. You can hear a lot of the tracks, including my favorite “Maybe Mexico,” here at his MySpace page. He’s playing the Varsity Theater with the Wars of 1812 and Molly Maher & Co. for openers. Should be a great show.
