331 Club to try on 501 downtown

No, it has nothing to do with jeans. As of April, the 331 Club will have a sister venue in downtown Minneapolis called the 501 Club. The name comes from the address, 501 Washington Av. S., formerly the site of Matty B’s. According to owner Jarret Oulman, the new space will keep the same no-cover policy and eclectic live music formula as at his northeast Minneapolis hangout, but it will also be serving food and be partitioned off into two halves (one a performance space and one for shooting pool/mouths off).

Personally, I’m excited about the 501 because it’ll be the only music venue I can walk to from the Strib office (OK, I’m a little lazy). But I’m curious if many other would-be patrons would often come into that somewhat stagnant part of downtown to see shows there? The 331 definitely helped liven up its hood. Also, Jarret openly stated he’s looking for new ideas to try at the new venue. Who’s got ‘em?

I’ll definitely be stopping in as I’m through that part of downtown almost everyday and the 331 Club fits into a place I would frequent so I deduce that the 501 will have a similar vibe.

I guess it might be a new idea for bars, but I would suggest experimenting with media performances other than live music. For example, film screenings, multi-media presentations, etc. This might be too Paris for Minneapolis, but we could use some more mixing of art and drinking ’round these parts.

I’d show some films and do some presentations/discussions. I am working on becoming the Robert Pollard of filmmaking (a plethora of very short films).

I just remembered that what I’m suggesting is already happening at Salon Saloon at the Nomad World Pub on the West Bank:

Maybe having salon saloon at the 501 as well would be good.
