Steven Page leaves BNL

Steven Page, the bespectacled, often funny co-frontman of Barenaked Ladies, has left the band to pursue a solo career. The band made the announcement Tuesday night on its website.

Page was arrested for cocaine possession last year and given 6 months probation. After announcing in a December blog posting that he was feeling great, had found a new love and  lost 40 pounds, he apparently last performed with the band this month on a Ships and Dip cruise with Sarah McLachlan, Great Big Sea and other acts.

Page plans to make a solo record and pursue theatrical opportunities. Meanwhile, BNL says it plans to record an album and tour this year.

What do you think of BNL without Page? I’m worried that they’ll be humor impaired.

They’re done. Think of all the songs where either Page sings (’The Old Apartment,’ ‘Brian Wilson,’) or both he and Ed sing on both (’One Week,’ ‘If I Had A Million Dollars,’ ‘Pinch Me’). That’s most of their big hits. Who’s going to sing them? I don’t see this working out at all.

This sucks. BNL is honestly one of my favorite live acts. I know it’s funny as I’ve seen hundreds of shows - over 160 in the last year, but it’s hard to top Steven & Ed. This news is just awful.

Wow. Give them a chance; after all, they could get better! Triumphing over adversity and all.
