SXSW 2009: NPR’s good and bad (Thu afternoon)

A sign of the times in medialand, the Current (89.3 FM) scaled back its SXSW team this year from about 15 staffers to two and is only doing one band broadcast tonight at 8 pm.; The Decemberists‘ show at Stubb’s last night, which it’s picking up from NPR (National Public Radio). Meanwhile, NPR scaled back to only one day of broadcasts, which was today live from a poorly air-conditioned Parish.
The last two bands of the set were two bands I recently missed in Minneapolis — only one of which I now regret. That would be Blitzen Trapper, the quirky but ambitious and waaay-hippie Portland sextet that melds everything from Zappa and Bowie to CSNY and even America. That mix came off more impressive on stage than it does on record, especially the big 3- and 4-part harmonies — which is something a lot of current buzz bands are trying.
The Dirty Projectors, who went on before BT, should try again. Their harmonies were just plain off-putting. So were the New York band’s jaggedy, driving, vaguely African, Eno-esque/Talking Heads rhythms, also something a lot of new bands are jumping into these days — and many of them are doing that better, too.

you didn’t miss a thing by not seeing Blitzen’s First Ave gig last month Chris… it was pretty poor.
i’ve seen them 5x now and they’re very hit or miss unfortunately. last October at the Turf was AMAZING. glad you got a good show.
I thought the BT First Ave show was outstanding; agree that some of their stuff really has to be seen live to be appreciated. The organ solo on “Saturday Night” was outta site!
Chris you could not be more wrong about these two bands you mentioned, and it frankly shows how conservative your tastes are and have always been. Blitzen Trapper is a fine little band, they put on a good enough set, but their music has become more and more bland with each new record. There’s hardly a unique sound on their newest one.
Dirty Projectors, on the other hand, are superb musicians who try to do new and daring things, musically and compositionally. Not surprised at all that you just didn’t get it. Thankfully, the good people at the Walker do, because their set at the Walker a couple weeks back was pure magic.
blitzen trapper is no band of horses…right, chris?
Nope, BoH is still twice the band… but I think very, very highly of them, and just highly of BT now.
